Vancouver named Top City in the Americas

Readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, one of North America's leading consumer travel publications, have once again named Vancouver the “Best City in the Americas” in the magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey.

The award, presented at a ceremony in New York City on October 12th, represents the fifth time Vancouver has won the title since 2004.

“This award underscores our efforts to showcase our urban life, arts, spectacular sights and wide range of attractions, which make Vancouver an amazing vacation destination,” said Kevin Krueger, British Columbia’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. “This honour, from the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, will surely encourage more visitors to discover what the city of Vancouver and our spectacular province have to offer.”

The poll, which defines the Americas as Canada, Central America and South America, asked readers to rate cities on a variety of criteria, including culture and sites, restaurants, lodging, shopping, ambience and friendliness.

“It’s a great honour for Vancouver to be so highly praised by Condé Nast Traveler magazine,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. "Tourism is a major contributor to our city's economy, and our goal is to ensure that Vancouver remains a favourite destination for travellers in the years ahead.”

Due to appear in the November 2010 issue of Condé Nast Traveler, the Readers’ Choice Awards detail top cities, islands, hotels, resorts, airlines, car rental agencies and cruise lines around the world.

Vancouver is no stranger to major accolades. In 2009 alone, the city was named “the world’s most liveable city” by the Economist Intelligence Unit, “North America’s top destination for international meetings” by the International Congress & Convention Association, and “top city in the Americas” in the Mercer Human Resource Consulting annual quality of living survey.

“Tourism Vancouver is exceptionally proud of this award,” said James E. Terry, board chair of the destination marketing organization which represents over 1,000 hotels, restaurants and attractions in Vancouver. “It furthers the work Tourism Vancouver and partners do to enhance the profile of our destination, and is a real tribute to the men and women who work at the front lines of our tourism and hospitality sector.”
