Free Music for the Weekend: Robin Thicke, Nomi Madness & Cash Cash

By John Hill

Free downloads for you! And for you! And for you! I feel like Oprah here, but when artists are feeling generous enough to get their music out to the public for free, why wouldn’t you take them up on it?

Here are a few quality tracks and mixes to check out and maybe add to your weekend playlist:

Blurred Lines (Rejoyce Interpretation): Robin Thicke, T.I. & Pharrell
This song is EVERYWHERE this summer, but if you can’t get enough, producer and label owner Rejoyce adds enough oomph to the track to keep you movin’ and groovin’ on the treadmill or the dance floor.

My Love Is For Real (Goh Hotoda Mix): Nomi Madness
Nomi Madness should be familiar to regular readers as Warren Nomi, a severely underrated pop/dance artist who should already be a superstar on the dancefloor. This song popped up after the Supreme Court ruling on Prop 8 and DOMA, and it’s Inner City-influenced vibe has been burning up my summer playlist ever since. Fun fact: this song was co-written with 90s chanteuse Cathy Dennis for Victoria Beckham’s ill-fated sophomore album in the mid-00s that never saw the light of day.

Cash Cash’s Royalty Radio #001 NYC’s EDM trio are not only recording artists, but they are also in-demand producers and remixers that are enjoying success right now with up-and-coming group Krewella. Check out their first episode of Royalty Radio, featuring cuts from artists like Miley Cyrus, Matthew Koma, Charli XCX and Krewella. If this doesn’t get your weekend off to a strong start, I’ve got nothing for ya.

Here's Something Worth Waiting For ... ALISON MOYET Counts Down the minutes New Album Out June 11, 2013

On June 11, 2013, Cooking Vinyl/Metropolis Records are proud to present the minutes, the new album by world-renowned musical icon ALISON MOYET, who has achieved sales of more than 20 million, both as a solo artist and half of influential duo Yaz (Yazoo outside of the US). Her first album since 2007, the minutes was written with and produced by Guy Sigsworth, known for his work with Frou Frou, Robyn, Björk, Goldie and Madonna. It finds Alison's voice strong and seductive on a collection of exceptional songs. Experimental, captivating and entirely cohesive, this is beauty with an edge.

Clearly indicating a new artistic lease of life, the minutes is arguably Alison's most creatively-brimming album ever. It has subtle parallels to her synth-pop past, but is also bang up-to-date, taking in elements of high-end pop smashes, R&B, modern club sounds and electronic experimentation.

"I avoided listening to anything during the process of writing and recording this album, choosing instead to be lead by my own melodic voice, the one I now find myself with 30-years-in," says Alison. "Guy Sigsworth returns me to a programmer's world and marries it with perfect musicality. I have been waiting for him. We have made an album mindless of industry mores that apply to middle-aged women and have shunned all talk of audiences, demographics and advert jazz covers. This has easily been my happiest studio experience."

Panoramic strings and icy electronics start proceedings on album-opener "Horizon Flame," before the massive-chorus-meets-jerky-robotic-R&B of "Changeling" kicks in. "Apple Kisses" highlights the versatility of Alison's singing; having defined dancefloor synth-pop in Yaz, this track sees her voice equally at home soaring over a snarling bassline that wouldn't sound out of place tearing from the Fabric sound system. Equally schooled in club culture is the punchy house/bass squelch of "Right As Rain," whilst the brighter in mood "Love Reign Supreme" recalls Chris & Cosey's "October Love Song." The darkly-beautiful, emotionally-fraught torch song "A Place To Stay" precedes the positive and uplifting "Filligree," which is indicative of the whole album's cohesive pendulum swing from darkness to light and back again.

Free Music Download: SOUND OF STEREO - ZIPPER (MAKJ REMIX)

Every year countless business and personal relationships are born at WMC/MMW in Miami and this year that was certainly the case for MAKJ.

Through the course of a few booze-fueled parties MAKJ met and befriended Belgian electro/techno duo Sound of Stereo, and after confessing to them that "Zipper" is still one of his favorite tracks to this day, the lads decided to relinquish the stems to MAKJ so that he could put his own twist on the track.

The results are an uber-bouncy Melbourne House electro monster that you can download for free right here!
