HRC Foundation & Human Rights First Release Joint Report on LGBT Africa

In advance of President Barack Obama’s upcoming summit with nearly 50 African heads of state, today the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality, and Human Rights First released a joint report that provides brief country-specific overviews on the status of LGBT people in each of the continent’s 54 nations. A link to the report is available here.

Heads of state from 32 of the 37 nations in Africa that criminalize LGBT relationships have been invited to the summit. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan—both of whom signed draconian anti-LGBT laws earlier this year—are scheduled to attend. The death penalty is allowed as a form of punishment in some Nigerian states, and leaders from two other nations that allow it in all or some parts of their country—Mauritania and Somalia—are also expected to participate.

“More than 800 million people live in African nations that criminalize LGBT individuals because of who they love or who they are” said Ty Cobb, HRC Foundation’s Director of Global Engagement. “Many face near-constant threats of harassment, discrimination, prosecution and violence on a daily basis, and others remain vulnerable to increasingly dangerous and concerted efforts to enact harsh anti-LGBT legislation. Supporting the human rights of all Africans, including LGBT Africans, must be an important part of our nation’s engagement.”

Each day for the next week, The Advocate will reveal two honorees from its annual “40 Under 40” list. Then, this Friday, readers will be asked to visit The Advocate’s Facebook fan page and cast their vote for the honoree they would like to appear on a special digital cover of the magazine. Voting will be open for one week (August 1 – 8) while fans decide who should earn the coveted cover spot. The winning cover, which will run online only, will be revealed in mid-August along with the remaining “40 Under 40” honorees.

“There are so many voices competing to be heard now. With this year’s “40 Under 40,” called ‘Emerging Voices,’ The Advocate is raising up LGBT people who have an important message. These people have something to say, and we think it’s worth your time to pause and really listen. Aside from that, they’ll also just make you really proud to be LGBT,” says Lucas Grindley, editorial director for Here Media.

Today’s honorees in the running for the digital cover spot are:

· Tyler Oakley — Tyler Oakley could be the first gay person you ever met. Where Hollywood falters, YouTube stars like Oakley excel at introducing America to a world where being LGBT is just part of your story. Read more at: http://bit.ly/1u0qmzv

· CeCe McDonald —Going to prison made CeCe McDonald want to fix them. With a conviction that changed her life, McDonald found herself fighting against the struggles transgender women face in America's already unbalanced judicial system. Read more at: http://bit.ly/1Az1LXi

Dirty Loops are longtime friends and music school classmates Jonah Nilsson (vocals/keyboards), Henrik Linder (bass), and Aron Mellergardh (drums) who hail from Stockholm, Sweden and have made name for themselves with their twisted pop covers beginning with their take on Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance.” That video, which was made in the winter 2010 while the three band members attended Royal College of Music in Stockholm, became wildly successful with over 100,000 YouTube views and 10,000 Facebook shares in the first two month’s of release… without any promotion or social media savvy. The group’s videos have now garnered more than 20 million YouTube views to date, and their first original single, “Hit Me,” has just entered the Top 10 in Japan.

The Gay Vegans: Coming Out - I Am Vegan

By Dan Hanley

I know, you're not surprised. After all, it's in the title of my blog.

I have been vegan for 18 years and am still surprised by the reaction I get. Most notably, that people have to make a point to tell me how delicious their non-vegan meal is, how much they love meat or how they could never go vegan.

Before I proceed, please remember that I believe that everyone is on their own path. I always try to be there to support folks wanting to become vegan or even give it a try, but I am not standing in judgement to anyone who is not vegan.

I didn't become vegan because I didn't like animal meat or dairy cheese or dairy milk. I didn't become vegan to lose weight or try to be healthier.

A federal appeals court panel on Monday upheld a lower court ruling that Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

COLORADO TOURISM OFFICE REPORTS ALL-TIME RECORDS FOR VISITATION AND VISITOR SPENDING

Colorado set all-time records in terms of both visitor volume and visitor expenditures in 2013, welcoming 64.6 million visitors who spent $17.3 billion, the Colorado Tourism Office announced today. The announcement came as part of the release of studies detailing visitation and spending in Colorado, as well as the effectiveness and impact of the state’s ‘Come To Life’ marketing campaign.

“These record-setting gains both in the number of tourists who have been flocking to Colorado and the billions of dollars they have been spending while they’re here is big part of why our state’s economy continues to grow,” said Governor John Hickenlooper. “We are fortunate to have so many hard-working and innovative tourism-related businesses and entrepreneurs. The state will continue to do everything we can to get out the word about just how awesome Colorado is.”
