Summer Denver Restaurant Week Starts Saturday, August 23-29

The Mile High City’s largest culinary event – Denver Restaurant Week (DRW) – will kick off on Saturday August 23, 2014, offering seven days of dining delight at more than 200 restaurants. During DRW, which runs August 23-29, participating restaurants will offer tantalizing, multi-course dinners for the fixed price of $30 (tax and tip not included).

This is the first summer version of the event. “Summer restaurant week offers many new features, including the ability to have outdoor dining and a variety of fresh, locally-sourced produce and seasonal items on the menu,” said Richard Scharf, president & CEO of VISIT DENVER, organizer of the event.

Menus are listed by cuisine and by neighborhood. Diners can also see which restaurants offer vegetarian options. “Planning is an important part of restaurant week,” Scharf said. “Some restaurants will fill up early at prime dining times, but there are many off-peak dining times that remain available, and of course, we encourage diners to experiment and try new restaurants.” The list of restaurants and menus will be frequently updated, so diners should check the website often.

Many of the participating restaurants offer expanded outdoor seating, which will make it even easier to get reservations this year. Still, Scharf encouraged diners to get on the website and make reservations early. “And please honor your reservations,” he said. “One of the most frustrating things about the event is when people make a reservation, and don’t show up, denying other diners that time slot. Don’t be a no-show! Please notify the restaurant if your plans change so they can fill that table,” Scharf said.

Super PAC is spending big to defend pro-LGBT Republicans

The Republican-led group American Unity plans to spend at least $2 million by Election Day to support pro-LGBT congressional candidates. Founded by billionaire Paul Singer, the super PAC has already spent $700,000 defending pro-LGBT Republicans including U.S. Reps. Richard Hanna of New York and Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania. The group is also supporting Richard Tisei, who is running for a U.S. House seat in Massachusetts.

"What American Unity PAC is committed to doing is ensuring that as these courageous elected officials follow their conscience and do the right thing, that there is a political network in place that's there to defend them," senior adviser Jeff Cook-McCormac said.

The Gay Vegans Restaurant review: Modern Love in Omaha

By Dan Hanley

I was able to stop in Omaha on my way back from Michigan and boy am I glad I did. The newest (I think) vegan restaurant in the U.S., Modern Love, opened on August 5th right in the middle of beef country. And I got to go!

Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a well-known name in the vegan and foodie communities. She created Post Punk Kitchen and is the author of several incredible vegan cookbooks, including one of my all-time favorites, "Vegan Brunch". She is the chef/owner of Modern Love, and knowing how many incredible meals Mike has made from her cookbooks, I just had to dine there while in Omaha. To be honest, it's the only reason I decided to make Omaha a stopping point on my way home.

Modern Love is located just a few minutes drive west of downtown Omaha. I had an airbnb in the north part of downtown and it took me ten minutes driving. As I parked I practically exploded with excitement. I am not a food blogger or recipe creator or anything like that, but I sure do love amazing vegan food. And I just knew that my world was about to be rocked.

Modern Love is cute. And clean. And packed. It seats about 30 - 40 and has an open kitchen. The hostess was kind and seated me immediately. A friendly face upon arrival is always nice.

Va. attorney general requests stay of marriage equality ruling

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, a Democrat, on Monday formally requested that the U.S. Supreme Court stay a lower court's ruling against the state's marriage equality ban. Herring, a supporter of marriage equality, asked for the stay to avoid "unintended negative consequences if the Court later rules against marriage equality" in the state, according to a statement. Many other LGBT advocates have pushed the court to allow the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling invalidating the ban to go into effect immediately. If the Supreme Court does not issue a stay of the ruling, same-sex marriages in Virginia could begin as early as Thursday.

DOL Issues Guidance on Workplace Protections to Include Transgender Employees of Federal Contractors

The U.S. Department of Labor yesterday issued official guidance and enforcement protocols clarifying the reach of the federal non-discrimination laws enforced by the Department and ensuring full protection for transgender individuals who work for federal contractors and subcontractors covered by these laws. This guidance is consistent with the 2012 decision in Macy v. Holder, in which the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) determined that discrimination based on an individual's gender identity is sex discrimination and thus constitutes a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1974.

"The Labor Department guidance issued today is a giant step toward ensuring American workers are judged based on the work they do, and never because of a fundamental aspect of who they are – like their gender identity,” said Human Rights Campaign Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “Transgender people face some of the highest levels of discrimination in our community, particularly in the workplace. And while explicit workplace protections are still needed at all levels of government, transgender people who work for federal contractors can now use this guidance as further protection from discrimination on the job."

The guidance will not only equip employees of federal contractors experiencing discrimination with an additional avenue to file a complaint outside of the EEOC process, but will also put employers on notice of existing non-discrimination obligations. This guidance illustrates the Department's consistent commitment to ending workplace discrimination, and will undoubtedly go a long way towards educating and empowering workers and employers alike.

OUT on DVD: I'm A Pornstar

Canteen Outlaws, the new label from veteran LGBT giant TLA Releasing, has announced the DVD release of Charlie David's I'm a Porn Star. The latest in his work on the off-camera lives of male sex workers, I'm a Porn Star follows the highly successful I'm a Stripper series.

There are an estimated 370 million pornographic websites online, generating $13 billion every year. Charlie David ("Dante's Cove", Mulligans) asks: Who's doing all this moonlighting? The answer: Probably some people you know. I'm a Porn Star follows the lives of guys in the neighborhood who are likely a lot more famous than you - at least on the Internet. Four established stars (Brent Everett, Colby Jansen, Rocco Reed and Johnny Rapid) each speak candidly about their experiences as highly lusted-after sexual icons, what they like when the cameras aren't rolling and grant complete access behind the scenes of their shoots.

The uncensored documentary will be available to rent or own in stores nationwide on September 9.

National AIDS Memorial Scholarship Program Named In Honor Of AIDS Educator, Activist And Reality TV Pioneer Pedro Zamora

The National AIDS Memorial Grove announced this week the naming of its youth scholarship program in honor of AIDS educator, activist and reality television pioneer Pedro Zamora, who passed away 20 years ago from an AIDS-related illness.

The Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship Program will help foster the next generation of leaders, helping support the academic efforts of emerging young people who share Pedro’s passionate commitment to ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

“Pedro dedicated his life to fighting the growing HIV/AIDS pandemic,” said Eric Ciasullo, National AIDS Memorial Grove board member. “Working diligently to raise public awareness, he helped arm other young people with the information and tools they needed to protect themselves against the virus. We honor Pedro’s courage and legacy through this scholarship program.”

At the age of 22, Pedro Zamora captivated the nation with his openness, compassion, vitality and charisma when he appeared on MTV’s The Real World 3: San Francisco (1994). At the veritable dawn of reality television, America watched a young Latino who was openly gay and openly HIV-positive. Viewers saw him living his life with joy and integrity, and trying to make a difference in the world

“We are heartened that 20 years after his passing, Pedro Zamora's legacy continues on with the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship. Pedro would be so proud that his work and his fight will be carried on by the very young people he was fighting for,” said Judd Winick, Pedro’s Real World roommate and author/illustrator of the award-winning graphic memoir Pedro and Me.

Nice To See StevieB: Steve Seeks His Soul Mate

By StevieB

I have lived, pretty much, in the same gay coffee house since it opened in the early nineties. Other than a multi-year life in Dallas in which I spent all my free time drinking coffee at Crossroads, a real gay coffee shop and homo-themed book shop; The gay coffee shop on 9th and Downing on Denver's Capitol Hill was my second home. Every paper for school had been plagerized written within its walls. First dates met and judged. Friends spending hours in quality dishing and chattering time.

Now it seems that time has moved on and this second home is gone. I mean, the business is still there, but its soul is gone. Sold to the highest bidder. This leaves me to find a new home. A new place to spend my time, attending college, arranging first dates, and hanging out with friends. So coffee house courtship begins. God, I hate dating. I mean when it doesn't matter, like guys, it's easy, but this hunt for a coffee shop is important. I am seeking the type of soul mate that matches on the level of a coffee shop. It's important stuff here.

So here's my list: It must be hip/gay...ish, have munchies along with coffee, close to the gay area of town, have a decent area (with power outlets) to chill out and write, and have a continual flow of good-looking guys. And most importantly, not try to kick me out after six hours of writing. You would be amazed how hard it is to find a place like this.

I have begun my search today by writing this entry at a new place on 13th and Downing called Capitol Hill Roastery with the hip vibe of a bigger city, it held promise. The cute and bearded barista was adorable. However; the power outlets were pretty much nonexistent. So I fear I have not found my soul-coffeeshop.

I have this fear that I'm just a dinosaur. A gay that's left over from an earlier age when hanging out in coffee shops was cool. Now, maybe there is no need. I don't want to think I live in the wrong city. That I have a mindset of writing in a coffee shop like a New Yorker, or a bearded gay in Seattle. Denver, please prove me wrong on both counts. All I want was is a coffee shop somewhere; with a comfy chair... next to a power outlet.

Don't Look Down On Me Chronicles A Day In The Life Of A Man With Dwarfism

Don't Look Down On Me by Jonathan Novick, is now available on Youtube. The short film chronicles a day in the life of Jonathan, living in New York City, who was born with Achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism. Jon uses footage from a hidden camera disguised as a button on his shirt to show what he has to deal with: mistaken identity, harassment, condescension, and bigotry.

"The next time you see someone who is different than you, think about what their day might be like. Think about all the events of their life leading up to that point...and think about what part of their day do you want to be?," is the final question filmmaker Novick poses to the viewer.

HIV Plus Magazine - 20 Amazing HIV-Positive Gay Men

From Greg Louganis to Keith Haring, there have been thousands of impressive gay men who have lived with HIV. With National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day just around the corner (held annually on September 27), HIV Plus magazine’s September/October 2014 cover story, the publication’s largest cover story ever, takes a look at 20 amazing gay men living openly and proudly as HIV-positive individuals.

“While there are many men who could have been on the list, these 20 individuals have shined bright as activists, entertainers, and educators. They have contributed in the fight against HIV, as well as the stigma surrounding it,” notes Diane Anderson-Minshall, editor in chief of HIV Plus.

The “20 Amazing HIV-Positive Gay Men” include:

  • Andy Bell – Anyone who grew up in the 1980s and ‘90s knows the music of Erasure, the chart-topping, award-winning two-man New Wave mega-band started by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell nearly 30 years ago. In all they’ve sold 25 million albums and achieved more than 40 synth-fueled hit singles. And through it all, musician Andy Bell has remained a powerful sex symbol who happens to be HIV-positive.

  • Sam Page – With his classic surfer looks and a positive focus, lifestyle expert Sam Page might look just like any other Southern California fitness buff. But with a celebrity clientele that includes Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and a Zen-learner-meets-gay-Dr. Oz philosophy, Page is anything but a typical Hollywood trainer. He’s been helping other HIV-positive guys, including members of Being Alive and Life Group LA.

  • Douglas M. Brooks – It was with much fanfare that President Obama appointed Douglas M. Brooks, one of the nation’s foremost HIV and AIDS policy authorities, as the director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy earlier this year. He did so due to the impressive resume of Brooks, whose experience, according to Obama, makes him “uniquely suited to the task of helping to achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation, which is within our reach.”

  • Cyon Flare – Coming out as gay to your mom at 13 is tough for many kids, but not for Cyon Flare. The 43-year-old performer says, “She knew, probably because I was walking around in cha-cha heels by the time I was 5 years old. In my family it was not labeled as a masculine or feminine thing…my mama didn’t play that!” Now, the guy behind the Billboard hit “Everybody Everybody” is back in the studio recording a new song called “Friendly Love,” dedicated to an anti-stigma campaign that’s dear to his heart, called Mr. Friendly.

  • Ongina – Ongina was one of the first reality TV stars to come out as HIV-positive. The man behind the adorable drag persona disclosed his diagnosis on season 1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race in a heart-wrenching speech following a challenge victory. Since then he’s used his popularity to make a difference in the world of prevention and testing, and has a Web series called HIV + Me, in which he talks with people living with HIV about their experiences with the disease.

  • Chris Richey – Chris Richey’s journey with HIV has taken him to some unexpected places – including the White House. Richey responded to the news of his status first with shame, then with action, founding the Stigma Project the following year with friend Scott McPherson. The Stigma Project is dedicated to using social media campaigns in hopes of creating a world that is “HIV neutral” – where there is no stigma attached to the virus – and educating people on HIV prevention, to the point that someday the world will be free of HIV and AIDS.

HRC Statement on the Death of Jim Jeffords

Yesterday, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, mourned the passing of James M. Jeffords, former Republican congressman and senator from Vermont who famously dropped his party affiliation in 2001.

A moderate with a clear-eyed independent streak, Jeffords was an early supporter of LGBT equality within the Republican Party—jointly introducing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to the U.S. Senate with Senators Edward Kennedy and Joseph Lieberman in 1996. He continued that track record as an independent, opposing a Federal Marriage Amendment in both 2004 and 2006.

In response to Senator Jeffords’ passing, HRC Director of Government Affairs David Stacy released the following statement:

“Jim Jeffords was a consummate statesman, bringing a fair mind and firm conviction to every issue he encountered. Today, the LGBT community depends on support from elected officials from across the political spectrum, and Jim Jeffords was an early and essential trailblazer in that effort. He will be sincerely missed.”

Jeffords retired from the Senate in 2007.
