Today Aspen Film announced the Opening and Closing Night feature presentations for the 35th edition of Aspen Filmfest. THE GOOD LIE (Alcon Entertainment, Imagine Entertainment, Black Label Media, Warner Bros. Pictures) launches the festival on September 26 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen. This moving drama about the Lost Boys of Sudan, directed by Philippe Falardeau, stars Reese Witherspoon, Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal and Kuoth Wiel and Corey Stoll. The festival will close on October 1 with Jason Reitman's ensemble drama MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN (Paramount Pictures), starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Rosemary DeWitt and Ansel Elgort. Director and co-writer Jason Reitman is expected. Following a special community preview on September 22, Aspen Filmfest officially kicks off September 26 and runs through October 1 at the Wheeler Opera House and Isis Theatre in Aspen, as well as the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale. Once again Aspen Filmfest will also cast a spotlight on documentary filmmaking. As previously announced, Alan Hicks' award-winning KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON (Radius/TWC), an inspiring portrait of friendship and music produced by Quincy Jones and Boulder-based Paula DuPre' Pesman, will screen earlier on September 26. Jesse Roseler's festival favorite, THE STARFISH THROWERS, an affecting look at the fight against hunger, will lead into Closing Night on October 1.

Set early in the fall awards season, Aspen Filmfest will preview a selection of high-profile fall releases, as well as acclaimed documentaries, independent productions and award-winning features from the international and US festival circuit. Queen Elizabeth II last week officially granted a royal pardon to computer scientist Alan Turing, who committed suicide in 1954 following a conviction over a relationship with another man.
Turing, who famously broke the Enigma code used by Nazi Germany during World War II, was convicted of "gross indecency" in 1952 at a time when consensual sex between same-sex partners was considered a crime under British law.
Chelsea Manning said in a letter released last Friday that the military has not honored her request to begin hormone therapy while incarcerated, despite public assurances to the contrary from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
Manning, who was convicted of violating the Espionage Act last year and is serving a 35-year sentence, accused the military of paying "lip-service" to the request and argues that denying treatment deemed medically necessary constitutes a violation of her rights.
Ecuador will soon recognize same-sex civil unions, President Rafael Correa announced Saturday.
Same-sex couples living in the country, who are barred from marrying or adopting children, will have "the full constitutional right" to register civil unions and have them reported on government-issued documents, said Correa, who met with representatives from Ecuador's LGBT community last week.
A federal appeals court last Thursday extended a stay of last month's ruling against Colorado's marriage equality ban. The court noted similar decisions out of other states as reasons for maintaining the stay, including a ruling from Virginia last week. The stay is likely to remain in place until the Supreme Court hears the case.
Americans who identify as LGBT report lower overall well-being than their non-LGBT counterparts, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index released Monday. Respondents who identified as LGBT posted an average score of 58 on the 1-100 index, compared with the non-LGBT group's 62 score. The gap between the groups was wider on the issue of financial well-being, with the LGBT population 10 points behind their non-LGBT counterparts.
New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat is coming to City Park in Denver, Colo. on Saturday, September 6, 2014.
The daylong event is free, yet all donations and proceeds from beer and
merchandise sales go to Denver-area non-profits. In total the 2013
season raised nearly $536,000, with the Denver stop bringing in $77,017.
This year, all funds raised in Denver will go to Bike Denver and The
Denver Cruisers.
At Tour de Fat friends, family and neighbors are all invited to come
enjoy eclectic entertainment, brewing education, a bicycle revival and
even a fashion show of the best Tour de Fat costumes. In the afternoon,
the stages heat up with acts like The Handsome Little Devils and Lucius.
The event kicks off with a costumed bicycle parade that winds through
city streets. The parade begins and ends in City Park, where the rest of
the day’s entertainment shines from musical acts to yo-yo performers,
bike contests and even vaudeville acts.

corral, eat delicious fare, relax in the grass, and participate in games
and activities such as a “Thousand Person Dance Contest,” which will

the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire, New Belgium’s year-round
offering, Snapshot Wheat, and selections from the acclaimed Lips of
Faith series.

to provide bikes to participants who are missing some wheels. For just
$20, people can rent a B-cycle for Tour de Fat. The bike just needs to

A lawsuit filed last week by Lambda Legal challenges the Department of Veterans Affairs over its policy to deny certain spousal benefits for same-couples living in states that do not recognize their unions.
The suit argues that current policy violates the Supreme Court decision that struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act.
Florida's marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional last week by a federal judge who compared the ban to now-defunct laws against interracial marriage.
"When observers look back 50 years from now, the arguments supporting Florida's ban on same-sex marriage, though just as sincerely held, will again seem an obvious pretext for discrimination," Judge Robert Hinkle wrote in his decision, which was stayed pending an expected appeal from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
