Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices Announces Summer 2015 Workshop Faculty

Lambda Literary is proud to announce details of the 2015 Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, the nation's premier LGBTQ writers workshop and residency. The Retreat will be held June 22-29, 2015 on the campus of the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles.

Faculty include Justin Torres (Fiction workshop), Linda Villarosa (Nonfiction workshop), Kazim Ali (Poetry workshop), and Sara Ryan (Genre Fiction workshop-emphasis on Young Adult Fiction and Graphic Novels). Faculty bios are listed below. Applications are now open online.

In 2007, Lambda Literary founded the Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices, a residency designed to offer intensive and sophisticated instruction to selected writers over a carefully designed one-week period. The Retreat provides open access to industry professionals and the opportunity for writing fellows to create an ongoing community of practice as they advance in their craft and careers. It is one of Lambda's most important initiatives: it represents the future of LGBTQ literature.

Applicants of the Retreat submit twenty pages of fiction/nonfiction or 10 pages of poetry that are evaluated for craft, creativity and originality. Twelve students per workshop are accepted into the competitive program where they spend the week working on their manuscripts, attending guest lectures led by publishing industry professionals, and participating in public readings. Ability to pay is in no way part of the decision-making process and scholarships are widely available. The LLF Writers Retreat Fellows have gone on to publish an impressive array of works.

The Gay Vegans: Don't Forget What the Bigots Did

By Dan Hanley

What an amazing week!

Watching gay couples get married in Oklahoma, Virginia, West Virginia, Nevada. Legal marriage is now in a majority of the states. I wept as I watched couples who had been together 20, 30 years finally being allowed to legally marry.

Of course many are not happy. As I write, the state of South Carolina is doing everything they can to not allow gays to marry.

And as hundreds of couples marry around the country, I ask each of you to not forget.

Please don't forget the bigots and the religious extremists. Please don't forget those who used every waking breathe to keep marriage from us.

Please don't forget those who had the power to simply say yes, or vote yes, and instead said or voted no.

Please don't forget those who demonized us, and continue to demonize us.

Which brings me to my point.

Many of these same people are running for election or re-election across the country. Some of them want people to forget their horrible words and votes against gays and lesbians. Some of them think they will get more votes by demonizing us.

Don't let them do it. Don't let them win.

We have the power. It's called the vote.

Vote. Make sure they know we haven't forgotten. Make sure we speak with a loud voice.

Aspen Gay Ski Week Returns for 38th Year

Aspen Gay Ski Week returns for its 38th year from January 11 to 18, 2015. Proceeds from the event will benefit Roaring Fork Gay and Lesbian Community Fund, which has promoted tolerance, understanding and diversity through education, community action and service since 1996.

In 2014, AGSW welcomed 5,000 guests to the legendary mountain town, featuring pristine piste on four mountains, lively après-ski parties and nightly events--including a Comedy Night with Mario Cantone from Sex in the City.

"Our event injects over $1.5 million into the local Aspen economy in one week, selling 2,500 hotel room nights and thousands of ski lift tickets," remarked Pamela Herr, organizer of AGSW. "From magazines and blogs from Australia to Brazil to Germany, AGSW 2014 was read, seen and heard about internationally."

OUT on DVD: My Straight Son (Azul Y No Tan Rosa)

Canteen Outlaws, the new label from veteran LGBT giant TLA Releasing, has announced the DVD release of Miguel Ferrari's My Straight Son (Azul Y No Tan Rosa), following a wildly successful run on the LGBT film festival circuit.  Ferrari flipped the classic story of a gay child trying to win a straight parent's approval in this Spanish language tale of a gay father trying to reconnect with his unaccepting straight son.

For this, the famous telenovela actor took home the Best Feature Film Director Award at Long Beach QFest and the film won Best Iberoamerican Film at the Goya Awards.

Alaska marriage ban ruled unconstitutional

A federal judge last weekend struck down Alaska's ban on marriage equality, prompting state officials to announce their intent to appeal the ruling

"Although the district court today may have been bound by the recent 9th Circuit panel opinion, the status of that opinion and the law in general in this area is in flux. I will defend our constitution," said Gov. Sean Parnell, a Republican.

New Survey Shows Many Of You Are NOT Good Kissers

A new survey has found that many people aren’t as good at kissing as they think.

The survey, led by YourTango found that the majority of people reportedly think they are pros at puckering up—however, only 53% of people believe that their partners are good kissers.

Andrea Miller, relationship expert and CEO of YourTango, says, “Our survey found that 51 percent of people say that kissing is crucial in a relationship. However, as the results show, many survey respondents think their partner could use a little work.”

The survey found that bad breath, too much pressure, and sloppiness all factored into a bad kiss.

Miller continues, “If you want to improve kissing in your relationship, my advice is to tune into the types of kisses your partner desires. We all like to be kissed differently, so find out how your partner prefers to be kissed, whether it’s soft and slow, deep and passionate, fast and fierce, etc. And, make sure that your kisses don’t fall by the wayside in your long-term relationship! Kiss your partner everyday, even if you have to make a reminder to do so in your smartphone.”

Liberace - The Lost Interview

Liberace-mania has been enjoying quite a resurgence recently, first there was the award-winning film “Behind the Candelabra” and now PBS Digital Studios’ Blank on Blank has released a “lost” interview with Liberace and it’s quite an interesting look at the iconic entertainer.

In this 1968 interview with KTRH Houston, the iconic entertainer talks about the “peacocking” of men’s fashion, hard work, his divine calling, hard work and spending money.

“Anyone that dares begrudge what I have today just better get off their duff and do something about it – do something for themselves as well as their country,” says the man known for the most flamboyant, excessive wardrobe in show business, in this previously unheard interview brought to you by PBS Digital Studios’ Blank on Blank. Liberace adds, “I feel that I have a perfect right to spend my money the way I damn please.”

Watch the visual representation for "Coulda Been My Love," directed by Grant Singer, and catch the nine-piece Star Power band at the very top of their game throughout North America over the next two weeks.
