The Gay Vegans: Today I got pissed off

By Dan Hanley

I have been vegan for 18 years. I have been out of the closet (openly gay) since 1990for 24 years.

So I am used to dealing with folks who are openly and verbally judgmental towards vegans/veganism and gays/sexual minorities.

Being used to it, many times I just shrug it off. Sometimes I engage in a kind way, especially when it comes to legal marriage or what the Bible says about married gay men living in the 21st century who want to have sex. Or when someone asks "do they really hurt the animals?"

And seldom does this negativity get to me.

Until the other day.

When talking about leaving some vegan food aside for a future day, someone I do not know said "well you definitely don't need to worry about me touching it!" They just said it, not directed to me, but as a public announcement.

Inside I became enraged. Like, WTF. Like, was that really necessary?

The rage stayed inside me for hours. It was tough to let go.

I did, finally.

I do not want to be angry, or carry anger. I don't understand why people judge or shame or ridicule. I don't like it. So the easiest thing for me is to not become those people.

After all, I can't change people. I can only control me.

I like being kind and loving. And I like being vegan and gay.

James Cook - Lilly (A Lover's Dream)

Dark yet uplifting melodies combine with strings, brass, warm electronica and James Cook's trademark razor sharp lyrics to bring a unique and insightful pop experience that engages both head and heart.  To promote 'Adventures In Ausland' James releases the single 'Lilly'(a Lover's Dream) which will also form the first part of a video trilogy, loosely based around a time traveling theme.

'Lilly' the song and video was inspired by a dream as James explains  'both came to me full formed one night as a dream, I woke up and recorded the riff and went back to sleep.  The dream continued and upon waking, I wrote the entire lyrics out exactly as they had appeared to me in the dream.  As for the album 'Adventures in Ausland' formed in my head as the title, and the songs soon started to become 'episodes' from the narrative.  I decided to bring this idea to my animator/director friend Graeme Maguire and we conceived a trilogy of videos.'

Apple CEO Tim Cook Comes Out

Today in an op-ed in Bloomberg Businessweek, Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly took a courageous step forward. In doing so, he committed himself to using the influence that comes with heading of one of the world’s largest corporations to fight for the rights and equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people across America. Cook and Apple were already leaders in advocating for LGBT equality and have for years promoted inclusive workplaces practices within the corporation, consistently scoring a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index. They have also lobbied for legal solutions to discrimination like marriage equality and workplace non-discrimination laws at the federal level. In response to today’s news, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President Chad Griffin issued the following statement:

“Tim Cook’s announcement today will save countless lives. He has always been a role model, but today millions across the globe will draw inspiration from a different aspect of his life. Tim Cook is proof that LGBT young people can dream as big as their minds will allow them to, whether they want to be doctors, a U.S. Senator, or even CEO of the world’s biggest brand. Apple has consistently fought for the LGBT community and we’re incredibly grateful that today’s announcement will bring even more to their work for equality.”

Alan Cumming on His New Memoir, His Return to 'Cabaret' & CBS' 'The Good Wife'

Tony-Award-winning actor Alan Cumming sits down with Larry King on the Emmy nominated series “Larry King Now” to talk about the abuse he suffered as a child, reprising his iconic role in 'Cabaret', and what is in store this season on 'The Good Wife.' Plus, why he throws the best post-show parties in his dressing room.

Larry asked Alan about his role on ‘The Good Wife’ and actress Archie Panjabi's upcoming exit from the show, “She’s been doing it for 6 years and she’s out of contract and I think she just wants to go in so – but it’s a while before she goes.” He also talked about his ties to Scotland, why he campaigned for independence, and the future of politics in his homeland.

The Tony award winner discussed why he chose to reprise his iconic role in the famed Broadway musical, ‘Cabaret’, “I just also thought wouldn't it be great to be doing this dancing my tits off on a Broadway stage with girls half my age when I was 50.” Alan also discussed his bisexuality and how people’s views on it have changed throughout the years, “There’s been a kind of a fad where people think oh, they’re not - bi-sexual means you’re either going to be gay, but you haven’t quite – you don’t feel comfortable with it yet or you’re kind of just a whore” he added, “I do feel very much that people get it now.”

The actor talked about his new book ‘Not My Father’s Son: A Memoir,’ "I wanted to do something that was more personal and more about what my life is really like. It’s a much more holistic look at what my life is like." Alan also recounted the moment he realized his father was having an affair, during a family outing to the beach and shared a photo from the day with Larry.

Stonewall Fitness: Killed for Convenience

By David Smith

Not many people realize how our lives are affected by the design and availability of such modern conveniences. The standard advice you’ll hear for improving your physical activity usually include taking the stairs and parking farther away right? However in the design of many buildings and public places, this is easier said than done. Most multi-level major centers including skyscrapers, malls, parking garages, bus/ train stations, airports and such have very prominent access to elevators and escalators but where are the stairs? Most of the time they are tucked away into a creepy, dark and cold corridor off the main path, now who in their right mind would you want to go through all that effort and energy when there is a more convenient and welcoming option available. Well consider your health and what may seem like a harmless trip up the escalator not only reflects your mental and physical approach to better health but also our society’s contribution to health and combating obesity.

I am sure you are wondering why I am thinking so much into this but considering even taking the stairs over the escalator can contribute greatly to cardiovascular and muscular health, it is what separates the lazy from the motivated. We live in a society that consumes twice as much energy as we expend and when this energy isn’t expended it’s stored. As a result people get fatter, this puts significant amount of weight and pressure on the joints, bones, blood vessels, heart, brain and the rest of the body. Weakening the body and making us more susceptible to disease and degeneration. Deconditioned individuals in this state have a much lower lifespan and are are increased risk of diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, heart arrhythmias and many other things, especially at a younger age than these issues would otherwise become apparent!

The little things always count and it doesn’t have to take a big change in your habits to have an impact, even something as small as parking farther away and walking everyday can have a significant impact on your health.

Unfortunately as a society we have allowed these conveniences to take over our lives and we are reeling in the consequences. We spend so much time driving around a parking lot to find a close spot when it would actually be faster to park farther away and walk.

Many “conveniences” were originally in place to assist physically challenged individuals into being able to operate independently but are being used by the general population due our natural instinct to find the easiest option. Why pull open the heavy door when you can push the blue button that’ll open it for you? Your health depends on it! We are not a society of hunters and gatherers, food is much more abundant and we are not expending nearly as much energy as we need to. As a result people are getting bigger and lazier as the designers and builders of our infrastructure continue to construct ways to contribute to this:

Moving walkways at the airport for example, have absolutely no real purpose then to help you get to where your going faster and easier but what is it really doing to us? Taking 5 minutes off your walk through the airport just to sit at the gate for longer, did you know that extra 5 minutes of walking and carrying the suitcase or backpack can burn more calories? Even more it allows you to relax a bit more and just enjoy where your at without stressing so much to get where your going!

The United States has a pretty strong car culture and with that comes the “convenience” of getting things done without getting out of the car. Drive thru and Drive In restaurants allow us to acquire and consuming unhealthy food for energy with minimal expenditure, next time you wonder why your so fat, slap yourself in the face, it’s that obvious! People will wait in a long line at a drive thru when the restaurant inside is empty, park your car, get off your butt and walk in, chances are you need the exercise anyway. When your car is ready for a wash, don’t take it to the car wash, do it yourself! Did you know you could burn up to 400 extra calories a day? (LiveStrong)

From automatic doors, drive thrus, moving walkways, highways, elevators, valet parking, and such, convenience may be less effort but it’s at a cost to your health. It takes an active and conscious effort to seek out the better option, even if you have to ask where the stairs are, it’ll also take a couple extra minutes out of your day but you’ll find yourself with more energy, living healthier, feeling stronger and overall stepping above and beyond the lazy people for the better.

Stripped Down Stand Up With Mona Lott Tonight!

Mona Lott (pictured left) does drag queen bingo differently. Her Stripped-Down Stand-Up show pits strippers against comedians and the audience wins either way. If the comedian gets a laugh, the stripper strips, but if the comedian bombs, the comedian must take something off. Sounds like my kind of show!

Check out the Halloween edition of the show tonight at the Denver Improv. There will be a Sexiest Costume Contest so wear your most revealing costume and you could win a fabulous prize.
