Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains to Provide Free HIV Testing for World AIDS Day

In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (PPRM) will provide free and confidential HIV testing at select health centers in Denver and Colorado Springs. PPRM is also doubling down on its vision of an AIDS-free generation by working in partnership with young people, communities of color, and people living with HIV to create the healthiest generation ever.

Since 2010, PPRM has offered free HIV testing on World Aids Day. Over the last year, PPRM health centers in Colorado provided 17689 rapid HIV tests as well as education and information to their patients.  They’ve also helped those patients who needed additional care, connected them with trusted, quality resources, and followed up with them to make sure they were cared for with the attention they needed.
“World Aids Day offers an opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV as we support PPRM’s mission to provide quality and affordable health care to all people, regardless of their economic or insured status”, said Savita Ginde, Vice President and Medical Director at PPRM.

According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV – and nearly one in six of those are not aware that they are infected.

“The only way to know for sure if a person has HIV is to get tested. Testing is relatively simple and will help prevent HIV from advancing to AIDS,” said C. Owen, Colorado’s Regional Director at PPRM.

“PPRM is committed to fighting for the world we want: a world with zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero discrimination,” said Amy Dickson, Vice President of Clinical Operations at PPRM.

Stonewall Fitness: Exercise and Living With HIV/AIDS

By David Smith

It’s no doubt that HIV/AIDS has had a huge impact on the GLBT community; it has affected many people within our community. Today over 1.3 million people (World Health Organization 2011) are living with HIV/AIDS and there have been many advancements in educational, prevention and treatment services offered that have turned the disease from a death sentence to on the verge of a cure.

Living a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly can have many benefits for people who live with HIV/AIDS. Greg Louganis for example was diagnosed with HIV shortly before the 1988 Olympics, he stated in his book that he was afraid he would be too sick to compete and almost called it quits. However the fact that he was exercising regularly and staying consistent with a healthy diet not only helped to keep the virus at bay but to keep his immune system strong, to the point he was able to fight off other infections such as the flu a lot quicker than his HIV negative teammates. (Louganis. G Breaking the Surface 1996).

HIV/AIDS is a virus that targets the immune system; it essentially attacks and breaks down the immune system making it much weaker and unable to fight off other infection. Many of the illness and death attributed to HIV/AIDS actually come from other viruses and infection such as pneumonia and shingles. The immune system at that point is so weak from the HIV/AIDS virus that it is very vulnerable and unable to amount a proper defense, letting the infection take over the body.

Two conditions associated with HIV/AIDS are lipodystrophy and muscular atrophy. Lipodystrophy is a change in how the body stores, processes and utilizes fat. It can lead to rapid and unhealthy weight loss or weight gain and significantly manipulating your fat stores at a dangerous level. (AIDS Info, National Institute of Health) This is unhealthy as it can affect your intake of fat-soluble vitamins as well as lead to an increased risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, stroke and diabetes. The specific cause is unknown but it is believed that HIV/AIDS combined with other factors such as age, race and sex play a significant role.

Muscular atrophy is the wasting away of muscle, both in strength and the muscle tissue itself becomes more and more diminished. This leads to reduced strength and functionality, it also significantly increases your risk of injury ranging from fractures on the bone, decreased bone strength, joint issues, inflammation of tendons and ligaments as well can increase risk of infection.

Both of these conditions can lead to exhaustion, fatigue, and inability to perform regular tasks, mental conditions including depression, anxiety, increased stress and body image issues.

Brand g Vacations: A Whole New Way to See Cuba

LGBT tour operator Brand g Vacations today released an updated itinerary for its February 2015 trip to Cuba, expanding its unique People to People Exchange.

Founded in 2011 as “the next generation in gay travel,” Brand g Vacations aims to capture the growing numbers of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender (LGBT) travelers, along with straight allies, who enjoy innovative escorted vacations to international spots.

“It’s a whole new way to see Cuba” said Brand g’s Managing Partner, Jeff Gundvaldson. “This will be one of the first opportunities for US citizens to enjoy shipboard life not only to travel from city to city but also as a floating hotel.” Jeff added, “This allows ample time to see the very best Cuba has to offer, while ensuring high quality dining and comfortable lodging, and minimizing the time spent traveling by motor coach.”

The new itinerary contains many special attractions for LGBT passengers including an optional visit to Humbolt 52, Havana's first gay bar and Cabaret Las Vegas with its popular drag show. Visitors also will have the chance to meet with Dr. Alberto Roque, one of Cuba's best known advocates on gender issues and equality, take a visit to the National Sex Education Center, Cenesex, which is an educational organization and an advocate for LGBT rights in Cuba, and enjoy lunch with Norma Guillard, lesbian activist and professor at the University of Havana.

According to Gundvaldson “This will be a great opportunity for our enthusiastic passengers to connect face-to-face with Cuba’s leading LGBT citizens and allies, as well as a chance to learn about Cuban life, history and the progress they are making.”

The itinerary also allows for a special visit to the UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve region and the international/eco-community of “Las Terrazas,” a tour of ‘Old Havana” a walk through one of the country’s largest nature reserves and a turtle breeding center, and to take part in exchanges with artists, salsa dance lessons and much more. “We will offer a good cross section of activities across a wide range of interests,” said Gundvaldson, “We are sure that there is something to appeal to most everyone.”

December 1 Marks World AIDS Day: Denver Public Health Supports PrEP as Tool to Reduce HIV Transmission Rates

Dale Britt and Brian LeMaire have been together for 26 years. For all but one of those months, Brian has been living with HIV. And, in all of their years together, Dale has never tested positive for the virus.

The first day of December is World AIDS Day, providing an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV, and remember people who have died. It also provides an opportunity to increase awareness of and support for prevention tools, including the use of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for HIV.

A person who does not have HIV uses PrEP to prevent themselves from becoming infected if they are exposed to the virus. The medication (Truvada) is taken once a day, and it works by limiting HIV’s ability to enter into and grow within a person’s body. When used correctly, PrEP has been shown to be more than 90 percent effective in preventing HIV. PrEP is just one tool that will reduce transmission rates of HIV. Other forms of prevention include testing, counseling, adherence to treatment among people living with HIV, and education.

Dr. Mark Thrun
“PrEP is not prescribed lightly, and we require the person using it to commit to counseling, correct use, and routine HIV and medical testing,” says Mark Thrun, MD, director, HIV/STD Prevention and Control, Denver Public Health. “But when we have this commitment, we know that PrEP is incredibly effective in keeping those at increased risk for HIV free from infection.”

Denver Public Health recommends PrEP for people who do not have HIV infection and are at increased risk for HIV, including:

  • Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who engage in unprotected sex.
  • HIV-negative individuals (men and women) who have an HIV-positive sexual partner.
  • Injection drug users.
Dale and Brian lived through the advent of HIV care as we know it today – antiretroviral therapy (ART). The road was not always easy. And though the couple lost many friends to HIV along the journey, they always remained optimistic and never gave up the fight against HIV. Earlier this year Dale began taking PrEP, a step that both he and Brian felt was not only important for their future, but also for a future for Denver in which there are no new cases of HIV or AIDS.

World AIDS Day: Time to Recommit to LGBT Community Members Most Forgotten

In honor of World AIDS Day, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, released the following statement by Jeff Krehely, Vice President and Chief Foundation Officer:

“With significant medical breakthroughs since World AIDS Day was first conceived in 1987, our community should be well on the path toward ending HIV. Sadly, though the rate of new infections has remained roughly the same over the past decade, the reality is that incidence of HIV is on the rise among only one group that’s tracked in the U.S. – gay and bisexual men. For transgender people, the little data that exists indicates staggering rates – both in the U.S. and globally. And when you shine a spotlight on young people, on communities of color, on older generations, on people living in the American South, you start to see how much more has to be done to end the deep disparities in HIV prevention, treatment and care. This World AIDS Day, we recommit to work for those often forgotten in the battle against HIV.”

As part of these efforts, the HRC Foundation has released a new research brief entitled “Transgender People and HIV: What We Know,” and HRC.org this week will be featuring the stories of individuals living with HIV.

The HRC Foundation was recently awarded a grant from the Elton John AIDS Foundation for its continued efforts to increase HIV awareness, prevention and treatment among LGBT people.

Worlds AIDS Day is a United Nations and World Health Organization effort to marshal forces in the fight against HIV, and to support and secure treatment for those living with it. This year’s theme, “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation,” is in keeping with the organizers’ ongoing “Getting to Zero” campaign.
