Evolve Vegas NYE Hosting Same-Sex Marriage Contest

On the heels of Nevada recently becoming the 31st state to allow same-sex marriage, Evolve Vegas NYE – a first-of-its-kind three-day gay New Year’s eve celebration – will officiate complimentary wedding ceremonies to four same-sex couples at the stroke of midnight this New Year’s Eve.

Occurring during EVOLUTION (Evolve Vegas NYE’s largest event taking place on New Year’s Eve), the four couples will be among the first to marry in Nevada in 2015.

A contest is being held to select the couples. True to Evolve Vegas NYE being an experience with international appeal, entries have been received from as far as Sydney, Australia. The winning couples will honor their vows in a history-making ceremony that will be witnessed by more than 1,000 Evolve Vegas NYE attendees from over 30 countries.

“We are beyond excited to have multiple gay weddings take place simultaneously during our main event,” said Mya Reyes, event producer for Evolve Vegas NYE and president of the Las Vegas Gay Visitors Bureau. “We’re in the midst of a very special moment for LGBTQ rights in Nevada, and that first second of the New Year is a special moment for everyone in general. We’re going to witness something extraordinary at EVOLUTION when the clock hits midnight and these four couples put their love on display for the world to see.”

I fully believe that time and support is one of the most valuable things we can give to one another. Everyone has a story to tell, and there’s always someone out there who’s waiting to hear it.”

“Many things have changed over the course of 16 years – but one crucial fact has carried through: LGBTQ youth deserve a space to get life-affirming help, support, and a sense of safety. That place was, is, and will continue to be, The Trevor Project,” said Abbe Land, The Trevor Project’s Executive Director & CEO.

HRC Releases Annual Buyer’s Guide

Before hitting the “purchase now” button for that holiday gift, consumers are encouraged to check out the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s new annual buying guide to see if those dollars are going to a business committed to workplace equality.

The popular Buying for Workplace Equality guide, first issued a decade ago by the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, provides invaluable consumer information based on company scores reported in the new Corporate Equality Index (CEI), as well as HRC-researched data on additional well-known companies and their brands.

The HRC Foundation’s CEI proactively rates Fortune 500 companies and top law firms on LGBT workplace equality. Smaller companies are also invited to participate.

The guide, released today, is available for viewing and download online. The guide’s iPhone and Android applications have also been updated and can be downloaded at www.hrc.org/iphone and www.hrc.org/android.

“Our annual Buying for Equality Guide gives all fair-minded consumers a quick reference to those familiar, popular brands that are also prioritizing LGBT inclusion,” said Liz Cooper, who oversees the guide as associate director of HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program. “With the LGBT community’s buying power in the U.S. edging close to $900 billion, businesses are increasingly responding with inclusive workplace policies.”

Said Cooper: “Every year we hear from members of our community that before choosing a car, a present, or even drinks for a holiday party, they check the buyer’s guide to ensure their dollars go to businesses that support them.”

Holiday Gift Guide: Pet Portraits By Maurice Becnel

Immortalize your furry friends with a pet portrait by Maurice Becnel. Clients admire Becnel's ability to capture the essence of a pet's personality in his work.

Says Becnel, "Painting animal portraits, for me, is more fun than it is work. I began painting them several years ago. The first one I did was for a friend on her birthday. Because it was a gift it never dawned on me that other people would commission me to do more. Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

Tranifesto: My Boyfriend Won’t Get Tested for STIs

By Matt Kailey

A reader writes: “I am a woman who recently started dating a man who was assigned female at birth and transitioned several years ago, a fact that he shared when we began talking about having sex.

“As part of my usual pre-sex discussion, I asked him about getting tested for HIV and other STIs, and he said that he has had very negative experiences with health care providers and was not willing to get tested.

“He said that since he has not engaged in risky behavior since he was tested several years ago, he could not possibly have HIV, and that he can’t transmit any fluid-based STIs to me anyway since he can’t ejaculate. (There are of course skin-to-skin STIs, but those are more difficult to test for).

“I know the likelihood of getting a fluid-based STI from him performing oral sex on me is very low, but I would still like him to get tested. From his vantage point, because of the very low risk factor, I am making an unreasonable request. From my vantage point, getting tested is something that responsible adults do to take care of themselves and their partners.

“However, I know that it is difficult for me to fully understand his resistance to medical settings, and the last thing I want to do is traumatize him or pressure him to do something that has a negative impact and have him end up resenting me. He appears to identify very strongly as male and not as trans, and I don’t think he would be open to going to an LGBT clinic, as he has felt marginalized by the queer community in the past.”
