Pet Portraits By Maurice Becnel

Immortalize your furry friends with a pet portrait by Maurice Becnel. Clients admire Becnel's ability to capture the essence of a pet's personality in his work.

Says Becnel, "Painting animal portraits, for me, is more fun than it is work. I began painting them several years ago. The first one I did was for a friend on her birthday. Because it was a gift it never dawned on me that other people would commission me to do more. Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

Travel: The Untold History - Leonardo and Michelangelo to be discovered with Quiiky gay tours

Two tours following in the footsteps of the two greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Two different towns to choose: Rome with its eternal beauty, and Milan, the fashion Capital, hosting Expo 2015. Just one relationship that links one to the other: the homosexuality of the two artists. Two itineraries through the Renaissance mentality, a way to travel deep inside this flourish time born in Italy and still living in Italians in some way.

Pope Francis and his step forward on gay rights has brought back many gay people to the Churchsays Alessio Virgili CEO and Founder of Quiiky, the tour operator organizer of these tours. “His open mind is almost revolutionary and gay people seem to have appreciated it. Even the Vatican Museums has registered a high presence of a lgbt audience in the recent period.

Now, for the first time, with Quiiky tours it is possible to admire Michelangelo and Leonardo works and paintings, getting knowledge of their private homosexual life that had so much influenced their way of making art. Gay friendly and well-informed guides lead you through the Vatican Museums in Rome and the locations linked to Leonardo’s life in Milan, to examine how much their works reflect their way of thinking and their beauty conception.

Starting from Rome and the Vatican Museums, Quiiky gay friendly tours help you to notice many interesting details the classic history of art has always ignored. For instance the Belvedere Apollo that inspired Michelangelo for the young Jesus, because it is harmonious like a ‘twink’, a young homosexual guy with an effeminate look. In the Sistine Chapel, inside the most important painting in the world, the “Giudizio Universale”, you will discover in heaven same-sex guys kissing each other to celebrate their assumption.

In Leonardo’s paintings you will have surprises as well. Just notice the face of John the Baptist in his portrait and in the Last Supper, an effeminate face clearly painted on the model of SalaƬ, the young disciple who worked with Leonardo. It seems that the genius had a very close relationship with this guy “keeping me fool” he uses to say in his scripts. In the Last Supper you will find items on this kind of relationship, transposed in the characters of Jesus and St. John, the favorite apostle of Jesus.

There are many hidden and not hidden particulars such as these, most of them even unknown by most of the people. In Renaissance period, homosexuality was usual so why should we have to hide it, after centuries? The experience of a tour showing clearly also these details represents a brand new way to understand the real art.

A Message From Black LGBT Religious Leaders

Over 150 Black LGBT Religious Leaders from around the country have come together to demand an end to police brutality and the criminalization of black bodies. Roland Stringfellow, Coordinator of CLGS' African American Roundtable, Bishop Yvette Flunder, Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries (TFAM), and Rev. Elder Darlene Garner, Director of the Office of Emerging Ministries, Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC), co-authored this powerful statement urging LGBT Black Christians and faith leaders to join tens of thousands of historically Black congregations/denominations and allies across the country in wearing black on December 14, 2014, to protest the criminalization, disproportionate incarceration, and killing of black and brown people by law enforcement.

Read The Full Press Release Here, Excerpt Below:
"We, as LGBT religious leaders across faith traditions and across our country have created an historic alliance among ourselves as we assert that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We declare and decree our wholehearted commitment to participating in a new wave of sacred resistance to power structures, which demean black bodies, and reinforce policies, that undermine the life, and vitality of our community. We uphold that All Black Lives Matter and condemn all the ways Black bodies are marginalized, and subjected to hostility.

To that end, we call for all Black religious voices to unite together across the diversity that exists among us to proclaim that we stand on the side of justice for all and that every life is sacred. To do so we must connect the dots between the forms of oppression that rise up from the toxic root of racism. We stand against oppressive practices wherever they exist and are committed to the practice of peace and we encourage our communities to find common ground.

We commit to moving from the margins to the middle as we articulate an integrated multi-issue justice movement embracing the totality of concerns impacting Black and Brown bodies: police brutality, mass incarceration, violence against trans people, income inequality, immigration discrimination, malnutrition, gun violence, the assault on reproductive health, unequal pay for women, inferior education, disproportionately high HIV/AIDS, Ebola, the homeless crisis among black gay youth, and the lethal exportation of homophobia to Africa by the Religious Right.

As demonstrators around the country are organizing themselves to speak truth to power, we join our voices to this chorus of justice seekers and stand in solidarity with all who seek to change the ways our communities are oppressed and disenfranchised.
In response to grand jury decisions in Ferguson, Missouri, and Staten Island, New York, and in other parts of the country where Black lives are ended senselessly over minor offenses or for no offense at all, our hearts are broken by the lack of justice for the victims of violence at the hands of law enforcement. We grieve with the families in St. Louis, Cleveland, and New York City who have lost their loved ones. We are also dismayed by militaristic police tactics that try to silence the voices of peaceful protesters reacting to the lack of justice from our legal system.

As religious leaders, we lift our voices in solidarity with the families, protesters, and all those who stand against discrimination. We affirm that the walls of racism, homophobia, transphobia and injustice must be pulled down in our communities, nation, on the continent of Africa and throughout the Diaspora."

U.S. Supreme Court to Consider Taking Up Louisiana Marriage Equality Case

Today the U.S. Supreme Court distributed a Louisiana marriage equality case for its January 9, 2015 conference. The justices will deliberate whether to take up Robicheaux v. George on appeal after a federal district court upheld the state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples in September of this year. In response to today’s news, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Legal Director Sarah Warbelow issued the following statement:

“There’s no question that the U.S. Supreme Court must decide the issue once and for all. The existing patchwork of marriage laws across the country creates immense challenges for same-sex couples who simply want a fair shot at protecting and providing for themselves and their families. A strong majority of Americans, along with dozens of federal courts across the country, agree that states should not be able to continue discriminating against couples who wish to have their relationships recognized as valid under the law.”

Along with the Robicheaux case, the U.S. Supreme Court has pending before it marriage cases out of four states from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, after a three-judge panel of that court overturned lower court rulings that had found Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee’s same-sex marriage bans unconstitutional. The Sixth Circuit ruling marked the first time a federal appeals court ruled in favor of state marriage bans.

Previously, the Supreme Court declined to take up challenges to rulings from the Fourth, Seventh and Tenth Circuits, which all found state marriage bans unconstitutional. Later the Ninth Circuit also ruled against state marriage bans. Today same-sex couples can legally marry in 35 states and Washington, D.C.

The Supreme Court is under no obligation as to which case or cases - if any - it chooses to hear on appeal, although the loss in the Sixth Circuit creates a circuit court split, increasing the likelihood the Supreme Court takes up the issue of marriage.

Ky. governor asks SCOTUS to review marriage case

Attorneys for Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear last week filed a brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a case challenging the state's marriage equality ban

"It is important for Kentucky -- and the country -– that the Court resolve the important question of who has the right to define marriage for a state," the team said in the brief. Kentucky's ban was one of four upheld in a decision by a federal appeals court panel last month.

Sam Smith Comes to Colorado

Sam Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour has been certified Platinum by the RIAA, following Multi-Platinum (4X) certification for his debut single, “Stay With Me,” and his current Platinum smash, “I’m Not The Only One.”* In addition to In the Lonely Hour selling more than one million copies by the traditional measures of physical and download album sales, it has sold an additional one million when factoring in the newer metrics of track- and stream-equivalent albums (as computed by Nielsen SoundScan).

Smith is the recent recipient of six Grammy Award nominations, including Album Of The Year for In The Lonely Hour, Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for “Stay With Me,” and Best New Artist. He also received nominations in the categories of Best Pop Vocal Album (In The Lonely Hour) and Best Pop Solo Performance (“Stay With Me”). Smith is the first male artist in 34 years, and the first male artist ever – to earn nominations in the “Big Four” General Field Grammy categories following the release of a debut album.

Other recent accolades for Smith include his being named iTunes Best New Artist of 2014, MTV selecting him as its number one artist of the year (Best Artist on its year-end “Best Of 2014” Top 10 lists), and “Stay With Me” earning the #1 slot on Amazon’s Best 50 Songs of 2014.

The 22-year-old artist paid tribute to Frank Sinatra with a stunning performance of the legendary singer’s Capitol Records classic “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” on “A Very GRAMMY Christmas,” a one-hour entertainment special that aired earlier this month on CBS. Smith’s rendition, which was delivered on the rooftop of Capitol Records’ historic Hollywood tower, is available now at all digital partners.

Smith made chart history in the U.S. with In The Lonely Hour, which sold more copies in its first week of release than any other U.K. male artist debut in the 23-year history of SoundScan. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2 and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. The Associated Press hailed it as “a passionate, heart-wrenching album” and The Washington Post observed, "‘In the Lonely Hour’ shows off every facet of Smith's voice to goose pimple-raising effect."

Over the course of 2014, Smith has won the BRIT Critics’ Choice award, the BBC Sound of 2014 prize, Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock honors at the American Music Awards, a Q award, four MOBOs and the VH1 2014 You Oughta Know Artist Of The Year award. He will return to the U.S. in January 2015 for his third North American headline tour in less than a year. The arena and theatre run includes a concert at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado on January 26.
