Kokumo Talks Poetry With Lambda Literary

Kokumo On Her New Poetry Collection, the Search For Love, and the Determination to Survive:

"This book has been in me my whole life. And I'd say what inspired it was the need to celebrate the genius of how I survived and survive a world that is consistently telling me I'm not welcome."

Take a peek inside Juliana Hatfield's '90s journals

Today, The Talkhouse is introducing a new feature called "If You Read, You'll Judge," in which musicians share pages from their old journals.

Juliana Hatfield is kicking off the feature today with pages from her Blake Babies tour diary, where she writes about meeting J Mascis and talking to Mike Watt.

Juliana Hatfield on keeping a diary: "In late 1990, my band the Blake Babies set out on tour. We were young. I kept a diary. We were doing shows with Firehose, Mike Watt's band at the time. These pages describe the scene one night, from my point of view, after we'd finished our opening set in Northampton, Massachusetts - plus what it was like to talk to Watt."

You can read the pages from her tour diary HERE.

CHERYL MCKENZIE OF APTN NATIONAL NEWS TO REPORT THE LATEST FROM STANDING ROCK, ND

APTN National News will spend the next several days reporting from Standing Rock, North Dakota, where thousands of Indigenous Peoples are gathering to oppose a controversial oil pipeline.

Indigenous Peoples from across North America are camped in the area in support of efforts by the Standing Rock Sioux to block construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, a project they claim is jeopardizing the sanctity of sacred tribal lands and putting at risk the safety of the Missouri River.

A federal judge is expected to render a decision today which will either block construction of the pipeline or allow it to continue. There are fears of a possible repeat of the violence that erupted this past weekend when private security guards used tear gas and attack dogs on demonstrators at the pipeline site. North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple has already announced he is mobilizing the National Guard.

Cheryl McKenzie, Co-Host of APTN National News nightly broadcast and host and producer of weekly current affairs program In Focus, will be joining APTN’s news team already on the scene, including reporters Dennis Ward and Tamara Pimentel, as well as a crew of camera people and editors.

They will be reporting across all APTN National News platforms including Twitter, Facebook, APTN National News Homepage, as well as on-air.

Debt Free Guys: We're the Debt Free Guys and We're Your Neighbors

By John R. Schneider, III & David Auten

Fifteen years ago, the two of us met at the old Tracks. We were in our late-20s, early-30s and just entered our peak social years. We were liberated, as were many gay men in those days. The bullying of our high school days was far behind us.

As gay kids, we didn’t have the dating and social experiences at the same ages as our straight friends. While we may have pretended, even convinced ourselves, that we wanted girlfriends, those relationships were never going to end well. Dating during high school, while awkward for all, was uniquely awkward for us as gay kids.

Like many people, the two of us sought the validation we didn’t get in school as kids from stuff we couldn’t afford as adults. We bought new cars with six+ year terms and no down payments. We covered every square foot of our home with Pottery Barn furniture purchased at the Cherry Creek store with credit cards. We always had the newest Diesel clothes and latest phones even though we rarely had the cash to pay for them. We spent way more time at the gym than we ever did on a budget.

Despite having had thirteen years of combined experience in financial services when we met on that gay disco dance floor, we had over $51,000 of combined credit card debt. A year and a half later, we were living in a basement apartment in Capitol Hill and not living the life of our dreams. David nickel and dimed himself. John spent big. This combination proved to be a cocktail of financial failure and unhappiness.

When we realized the gravity of our financial situation, we ignored our debt like a drunk uncle, worried about it like Woody Allen, talked about it like Oprah and were overwhelmed by it like the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. We ultimately gained the Michael Phelps-like focus that led to us becoming debt free.

As life-partners, we’re now debt free. As business partners, we’re The Debt Free Guys. We combine our personal and professional experiences with money to help others live debt free, have fun and be money conscious through our blog, books, public speaking and writing for publications and sites such as MileHighGayGuy.

We also host the Queer Money Show, which is a podcast and YouTube show. On Queer Money, we discuss the financial nuances of the queer community. Our mission is to build a financially stronger queer community, so that queer people can become leaders in the general community, continue our fight for equality and live our best lives.

Similarly, here on MileHighGayGuy.com, we’ll discuss investing, financial planning and all things money. We’ll mix the serious with the fun and always give you value that makes your investment with us worthwhile. We invite you to come back to our column regularly to be inspired to live a successful, money conscious life.

The Feline Fix - Caring for Colorado's Community Cats

More than 20,000 cats are euthanized annually in Colorado simply because there are not enough homes for them all. Unfortunately, we can't simply adopt our way out of the problem.

An unaltered female cat, tame or feral, may become pregnant as early as five months of age and bear two to three litters per year for her entire life; which for a feral cat is roughly five years.

The purpose of Divine Feline and it's clinic, The Feline Fix, is to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats and to promote the health and welfare of all cats, feral and tame, through the practice of providing quality and affordable spay and neuter services and the practice of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Co-LEADS Student Summit - Call for Proposals Extended!

The Co-LEADS conference was established in 2009 by a group of individuals on the Auraria and DU campuses as a way to bridge discussions of leadership and social justice in a meaningful way. The Summit invites college students from across Colorado to join in discussions of social justice, activism, advocacy, and social change. Throughout the day students participate in a number of workshops that challenge, grow, and inspire them to make change in their own lives and their communities.

This year, on October 7th, the conference will be exploring the timely theme: Justice for the Vote: Electoral Equity in a Diverse Democracy, focusing on voter rights, civic engagement, and other ideas for helping folks get involved in our political process in new and creative ways.

The deadline for proposals was just extended to Friday, September 16th so if you are interested in presenting a workshop either on the theme area or on general social justice themes,  submit here: https://fs11.formsite.com/sorcforms/form54/index.html.

The A-List Interview: Renée Zellweger

After having taken more than half a decade away from Hollywood, Oscar winner Renee Zellweger is back with the third installment of the Bridget Jones franchise, Bridget Jones’s Baby. The actress sat with The Advocate’s Brandon Voss to discuss her Hollywood hiatus, her gay chums, and the gay rumors that swirled around her ex-husband, Kenny Chesney, after their 2005 annulment.

On media outlets alleging that ex-husband Kenny Chesney was gay after she cited “fraud” as the reason for annulling their marriage in 2005:
“I forgot about that. It’s a pretty big thing to forget, isn’t it? That made me sad. It made me sad that somehow people were using that as a way to be cruel and calling someone gay as a pejorative, which has fateful consequences. Of course, there’s the bigger-picture problem of why anyone had to make up a story at all.”

On her gay male confidants:
“I’m lucky to have handfuls. The majority of my closest friends are gay, and I have my pearl. I went to Miami for New Year’s Eve some years back with him and his boyfriend, and we got paparazzied on the beach. … Some tabloid ran the photos and wrote, ‘Has Renée finally found her pearl?’ I was like, ‘Aww, he’s my pearl!’ He’s family to me. We dated for a minute, actually. … No, I knew he was gay — or had been gay. But he wasn’t gay that day!”

On whether a female admirer had ever expressed love for her:
"Yes, thank goodness. But I loved her differently. We talked about it, we laughed, and I was happy she trusted me and that we have a relationship where. we could have that conversation.”

On whether the gents may wind up together in Bridget Jones’s Baby:
“That was actually an ongoing joke on set because Colin [Firth] and Patrick [Dempsey] immediately had such an affinity for each other, which was wonderful. Maybe in the next movie? There’s still time!”

Dumb Friends League Turns 106 Years Old, Celebrates With Discounted Pet Adoptions

The Dumb Friends League turns 106 years old today, and to celebrate, the local animal welfare organization is offering discounted pet adoptions on cats and dogs.

Starting Friday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 11, the Dumb Friends League is offering waived adoption fees for all adult cats (1 year and older) and $25 off the adoption fee for all adult dogs (1 year and older). All adoptions include a spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, a microchip identification implant and a free visit to a participating veterinarian within the first 14 days of adoption. The standard adoption screening process still applies.

“We are proud to have been serving this community for the last 106 years,” said Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League. “In that time we’ve helped change millions of lives—both of the pets that come to our shelters and the people they share their lives with. But we could not do any of it without our adopters, volunteers, generous donors and the unwavering support of our community.”

The Dumb Friends League is the largest community-based animal welfare organization in the Rocky Mountain region, providing compassionate care to more than 20,000 homeless pets each year. In addition to finding homes for pets and horses, the League offers many other programs, including foster care, humane education, behavior training, animal welfare investigations, lost and found, and spay and neuter services for cats and dogs in underserved areas of metro Denver at reduced fees, subsidized by Dumb Friends League donors.

Founded in 1910, the Dumb Friends League was named after a London, England animal welfare group called “Our Dumb Friends League.” In those days, the term “dumb” was widely used to refer to animals because they lacked the power of human speech. Since then, the Dumb Friends League has become a national leader in animal welfare and has a four-star rating through Charity Navigator.
