ACLU: Stop police harassment of citizen journalists

By Anthony for the ACLU Action team,

More and more people have taken to their phones to monitor and record police behavior. And many of them face ongoing police harassment in retaliation. This is unconstitutional.

At a time when the public is outraged and sickened that Black men and women are killed by police in too many incidents, punishing people for documenting abuses is just unacceptable.

Join PEN America, People Demanding Action, and the ACLU and tell the Department of Justice to investigate this troubling trend of unconstitutional police retaliation and enforce DOJ policies on First Amendment rights.

Just 24 hours after posting a video of officers fatally shooting Alton Sterling, Chris LeDay says he was arrested by at least ten police officers. Some officers were carrying M-16 assault rifles. LeDay’s arrest warrant referenced old traffic tickets.

Philando Castile’s fiancĂ©e, Lavish “Diamond” Reynolds, was handcuffed and taken for questioning immediately after recording her husband-to-be’s death at the hands of an officer. Reynolds told reporters that police confiscated her phone and that she was denied water and food during a long night in detention.

The First Amendment protects us all from being punished for collecting or disseminating information related to government misconduct. Tell the Justice Department to hold police accountable to the Constitution.

Bystanders who filmed the arrests and deaths of Freddie Gray and Eric Garner have described similar police harassment and abuse. In some cases the retaliation has continued for months after an incident.

These allegations suggest that police officers are punishing people for documenting police brutality. In the age of camera phones and social media, police must receive training on the rights of citizen journalists. And these rights must be guaranteed to all.

Tell U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate police retaliation against people who record the police and to guarantee their First Amendment rights.

South Africa: Anti-gay U.S. pastor Steven Anderson barred from entering the country

The South African Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, has announced today that U.S. pastor Steven Anderson will be denied entry into South Africa. The decision comes as a result of a campaign launched by global LGBT organization All Out, in partnership with Gay SA Radio. Steven Anderson gained notoriety after celebrating the massacre at a gay club in Orlando, saying ‘there’s now 50 less pedophiles in the world’. He planned to go to South Africa on what he described as a ‘soul winning’ trip.

“We've seen how U.S. religious extremists have fueled violence and hate against LGBT people in other parts of Africa. It’s inspiring to see that the South African Government has made a stand for human rights and for the protection of their hate speech laws and constitution”, said Matt Beard, All Out's Executive Director.

All Out's partner, Gay SA Radio’s Station Manager Hendrik Baird, also lauded Minister Malusi Gigaba “for taking this matter seriously and for coming to the right decision that is in the best interests of South Africa”.

In his announcement, Minister Gigaba said “we have a duty to prevent harm and hatred in all forms against LGBTI, as any other person in a democratic state,” adding that “I have considered carefully the merits of this matter. Steven Anderson and members/associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of South Africa. I have identified Anderson and associates as undesirable persons. Undesirable persons are barred from travelling to South Africa.” He also acknowledged the importance of the more than 60,000 signatures he received last week in raising the issue.

The decision was based on section 29(1)(d) of South Africa’s Immigration Act, which allows the country to deny entry to any foreigner who is a “member of or adherent to an association or organization advocating the practice racial hatred or social violence.”

Hollywood’s Trans Formation

For its October 2016 issue, OUT magazine enlisted the help of two of Hollywood’s biggest trans content creators, Zackary Drucker & Rhys Ernst, who served as guest editors for the publication’s “Hollywood Trans Formation” issue. Zackary and Rhys have lent their voice to creating trans content across multiple platforms in the industry. From their roles as producers on the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Amazon series Transparent to their Emmy-nominated Web series, This Is Me, the duo has committed themselves to increasing the visibility and the accurate portrayal of the trans community.

The October 2016 cover story features a special portfolio of trans activists and allies hand selected by Zackary and Rhys entitled “Trans in Hollywood.” This curated list showcases the building blocks of a movement – one in which trans people are not only represented on screen, but also contribute as authors, creators, and craftspeople behind the scenes in what are arguably the largest vehicles of human empathy: film and television.

Profiles from OUT’s “Trans in Hollywood” portfolio below include:

Caitlyn Jenner – “People have been so accepting, and my transition has certainly not been normal by any means,” says Jenner, the star of I Am Cait. As the highest-profile person ever to transition in the public eye, Jenner is adamant that her journey is unique, and that she’s not a spokesperson for all trans women. “I’m very blessed,” she says. “It’s been extraordinarily rewarding, just to wake up in the morning and be yourself and have people be accepting of that.”

Candis Cayne (Actress) –Cayne made history on ABC’s 2007 series Dirty Sexy Money as the first transgender actress to play a recurring trans character in prime time. But being a trailblazer can take a personal toll, and on I Am Cait Cayne was able to open up to Caitlyn Jenner—and show the flip side to her glamorous, proud persona. “I had to represent our community. There couldn’t be a loose brick in this wall!” she says. “So it was cathartic for me to talk about the problems I’ve had being in this industry and the misogyny in our gay community against trans women.”

Laverne Cox (Actress)– There’s been a lot of press about Cox’s pioneering accomplishments for the trans community over the past couple years. “It’s very tricky, those conversations about the first, because they tend to erase people who’ve come before,” Cox says. “There are people who maybe weren’t able to be out, who were making strides that we may not even know about. It shows us how far we need to come that we’re just getting around to understanding that trans folks have talent, or are able to step into these roles on screen or on stage.”

Alexandra Billings (Actress) – Billings, who plays Davina on Amazon’s Transparent, offers much needed direction and empathy to Maura (Jeffrey Tambor), as well as guidance to many of the show’s viewers. “[Being trans in Hollywood] means that there’s hope for us, and there’s hope for the marginalized,” says Billings. “It’s less about trying to make money and more about trying to be compassionate and get along with each other and be kind.”

Geena Rocero (Model, Producer) –Rocero remembers her 2014 TED Talk about coming out as trans, a video which has garnered more than 3 million views on YouTube. “It took me a long time to get to that moment to finally share my journey, my culture, and get rid of internalized shame and heal myself,” she says. “Now I get to explore my full self with all the gifts that I share with the world.” Since the talk, Rocero has launched Gender Proud, an awareness campaign and media company that focuses on telling stories about what it means to be trans and gender-nonconforming.

Whoopi Goldberg (Executive Producer, Strut) – “Transgender people have been with us forever,” says Goldberg. “Not just recently. Not just on television. But in real life.” Goldberg is one of the executive producers of the new Oxygen series Strut, which follows five models from the world’s first exclusively transgender modeling agency, Slay Model Management.

Jill Soloway (Writer, Director) – The creative voice behind Amazon’s hit series Transparent, a show that has been revolutionary in terms of trans representation and trans hiring practices both in front of and behind the camera in Hollywood.

Mya Taylor (Actress)– After rising to fame in the indie hit Tangerine, Taylor has not let opportunity pass her by. Yet Taylor knows the road is never easy. Her experience as a sex worker was a direct consequence of the discrimination she faced looking for employment. “I had applied for 186 jobs in one month, and at the time I wasn’t doing great with money,” she recalled in an interview with OUT last year. “I had gotten a jaywalking ticket, and the state wouldn’t let me get my name changed legally until that was paid. So, whenever I applied for a job, they’d see a male name that didn’t match up with what I looked like. Translate that to the street with those other girls. They’ve tried to get jobs—they’ve really, really tried. So they resort to sex work, because it’s fast, and it’s easy money.”

Nick Adams (Trans Media Advocate) – As the director of GLAAD's Transgender Media program, Adams collaborates with Hollywood’s behind-the-scenes players—writers, casting directors, showrunners, network executives, and publicists—to facilitate factual and authentic transgender storytelling. It’s necessary work, considering that a mere 16% of Americans say they know someone who is transgender. “For 84% of Americans, everything they know about transgender people is coming from the media,” says Adams. “Therefore, it's important that Hollywood tell stories that reflect the true, lived experiences of transgender people. It needs the voices of trans people to help them do that.”

Stonewall Fitness: The Deal with the “4 Minute Workout”

By David Smith

There’s a lot of hype surrounding so called High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT) also known as Tabata training. Where you can “lose fat, get toned and look great in only 4 minutes a day!” or as the commercials claim. Does it really work or is just a bunch of BS?

HIIT is a very adaptive and adjustable style of workout that is easily adaptable to a wide variety of people, fitness levels and goals. To break it down simply, it involves a short period (10-45 seconds) of sustained activity at your highest intensity level followed by an even shorter rest period (10-30 seconds) and repeated several times. For example you could do jumping jacks for 45 seconds with 15 seconds of rest continuously for 4 minutes.

The idea here is by working your body at it’s max level you are training your body to consume its energy stores (calories; fats and carbs) as well as breaking down the muscles to encourage regeneration and recovery. Ultimately leading to that fountain of youth of losing weight and getting toned.

HIIT does have many positive aspects to it and has been shown to be a very effective mode of training for athletes and general fitness/ gym goers of all levels. After all it has been done in one form or another for decades! It has been shown to increase Excessive Post Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) which basically means your body continues to burn calories after your initial workout, can increase your endurance in maintaining both sprint intervals and lower intensity aerobic exercise. It also adds a nice variation to your routine.

Is HIIT something you can really only do for 4 minutes a day and reap the benefits? Not necessarily. To break it down the 4 minute interval period is a set, like any set of squats, deadlifts or anything else that you might break down during a typical workout. In order to really see the full benefits it is important to do multiple sets. Within each set you can change up the exercises as well to add variety and to hit multiple muscle groups to really get as much as you can. 2-4 sets is recommended to really engage the body and see results.

As with any workout program, make sure you have an appropriate warm up and cool down period. Since you are training the body on a higher intensity, it is crucial that you prepare for the high intensity training with an adequate warm up and at the end you ease the body back down to a resting state following. Jumping into the HIIT workout right off the bat and abruptly ending can lead to a reduction in your body’s ability to recover and you won’t see the full benefits that HIIT can offer.

To really maximize the benefits of HIIT, it should be included as part of a well-rounded fitness program.

A well-rounded fitness program also includes endurance or aerobic cardio, strength training (both for muscular strength and endurance) as well as flexibility training. For the athlete this will be more specific to the demands of the sport and for the general fitness/ gym goer this can be built in a way that best suits your personality, goals and facility. A well rounded fitness program will train the body for a wide variety of modes and engage the body on different levels all together that is very effective in building overall fitness and strength. It will also lead to the weight loss and increased muscle tone if that is part of one’s goals.

If you expect quick results with only 4 minutes a day, ultimately you are setting yourself up for failure. The fitness industry is built up around instant gratification and quick results, but to live in a real culture of physical fitness, instant results simply won’t do. Anything worth having doesn’t come easy.. At least 30 minutes a day for a proper HIIT session is necessary with the ultimate goal of a 60-90 minute training session that includes other components of physical fitness discussed in this article.

If you are interested in learning more and trying some HIIT workouts or are looking for new ideas on how to mix up your routine. Get in touch with David to schedule a one on one fitness consultation. Angie Craig opponent uses family photo to attack her wife and kids

Above: A Facebook post by GOP Communications Chair Vickie Froehlich attacking Angie Craig's family.
On Friday, a local GOP Communications Chair raising funds on behalf of Minnesota Congressional candidate Jason Lewis used a family photo to attack the wife and kids of Victory-endorsed candidate Angie Craig.

In a Facebook post promoting an upcoming Lewis fundraiser, Vickie Froehlich showed a photo of Angie, her wife and four teenage sons playing Scrabble around their dining table, and said:

“In case you're wondering - the family photo page is the families of our candidates and then of Jason Lewis' opponent - Angie Craig. She's liberal and this is her family. She and her female marriage partner and their 4 teenage sons. Support Jason, give to Jason and work for Jason!!!”

Jason Lewis has not denounced this attack, and an apology is unlikely. Like Donald Trump, there’s no group of Americans “Mini-Trump” Jason Lewis has not insulted. He has called young women “non-thinking,” saying they only care about abortion and gay marriage, suggested immigrants are destroying white culture, and implied that slavery might not only be legal, but would be just fine with him.

Jason Lewis is nicknamed “Mini-Trump” for a reason, and his attacks will affect all LGBT Americans if he reaches the U.S. Congress. We need to elect Angie in November.

Read a list (with GIFs) of 10 terrible Jason Lewis quotes.

Nice To See StevieB: Maintaining the Mean

By StevieB

I am not a fan of clutter. This may be part of my homosexual training in “clean surfaces.” Part of the homosexual agenda that pushes a simple and clean esthetic, and to force straights to no longer keep their toasters out on the counter, or large bowls of decorator soaps on the back of toilets. Pushing and forcing our agenda on America. An agenda of tasteful design, simplicity in form and function. When clean design solves a functional problem as simply and elegantly as possible, the resulting form will be carried to success by the gays.

That being said, I had a personal intervention last night….

Yes, I am working fifty hours a week on top of going to school. I still should be able to keep my desk clean. Yet at the bottom of the pile is the box my Mac came in… over a year and half ago. And that’s the issue. When I purchase fun toys, I don’t want to part with the box. Like unwrapping and unboxing is such a high, I don’t want to just toss out the package. If it didn’t just smack of effort and crazy, I’d be one of those “unboxers” on Youtube. Those people that video the unboxing of any new electronics, and post it to YouTube. If I start, I welcome any smacks to the head.

So, I just keep the bags and/or boxes to hold onto the thrill of opening the new item. Well, it may also be warranty and return purposes. That doesn’t mean I must leave them on my desk so I may contemplate when I should be writing a paper on Aristotle’s philosophy on happiness in human nature (no irony there).

Yet it does bring the reason why I still have the bag for my Coach wallet. “Happiness depends on ourselves.” Aristotle enshrines happiness as a central purpose of human life and a goal in itself. A new Coach wallet, although completely shallow in its happiness, makes me happy. Aristotle argues that virtue is achieved by maintaining the Mean, which is the balance between two excesses. I don’t depend wholly on wallets Swatches for happiness, they’re tiny treats for working fifty hours a week and going to school. I maintain the Mean.

Now if only I could get the bags and boxes off my desk to maintain my clean desk… that’s another issue. I am not a fan of clutter.
