Giving Tuesday: Support the Next Generation Of LGBTQ Youth Leaders

By Russell "Shotzi" Roybal, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force

I know you’ve spent the last several weeks hearing all about bargains and deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and if you're like me you took advantage of a few of them. Today the National LGBTQ Task Force has the best deal in town: supporting LGBTQ youth for #GivingTuesday.

I hope you'll join me in spending the day giving a little bit back to the LGBTQ community. I plan to raise $6,000 to get 20 young people to Creating Change, the National LGBTQ Task Force’s annual conference.

I was lucky enough to attend Creating Change when I was a young gay boy seeking a place where I could be my most authentic gay self. As a young drag performer who went by "Shotzi," there was no safer space for me than Creating Change. I could be both Russell and Shotzi without judgement or fear.

Each year, over 4,000 LGBTQ people and allies attend Creating Change. This year the conference coincides with inauguration day and the first days of the new Presidential administration. Now more than ever, we will need a place where LGBTQ people and allies can strategize on how to move our fight for equality forward. Please help give that opportunity to another young person in our community.

One gift of $300 gets an LGBTQ youth like Shotzi to Creating Change, two $150 gifts provide a safe space for a future Russell, and so do several $50 gifts.

Facebook Live with Mondo Guerra for World AIDS Day

On World AIDS Day, December 1st, 2016, Project Runway All Stars winner and Dining Out For Life spokesperson Mondo Guerra will reveal a 360-degree video designed to emphasize the power of Pozitivity while fostering hope and inspiration for people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Guerra approached this World AIDS Day project with the idea that we respond to situations based on how we perceive them. “With these designs, I hope to demonstrate the idea that reality is a fluid concept,” stated Guerra. “What we perceive as real is often defined by preconceived notions, attitudes and other influences. When I was first diagnosed with HIV, I could have chosen to see my status as devastating– and respond accordingly. Instead, I made a conscious choice to live with HIV in ways that challenge and inspire me both as an artist and as an advocate.”

Guerra will present the second generation of his acclaimed Pozitivity print as part of a :90 second video that will reveal 62 newly created images, each representing an AIDS Service Organization licensee of the annual Dining Out For Life fundraiser, “I am inspired to pay homage to those who work tirelessly helping others affected by HIV/AIDS.“

Marketing agency “15 Minutes” Inc. utilized a 360-degree video application on a montage of Guerra’s illustrations because the format allows viewers to change the angle of the imagery, altering their perception of the designs. For Guerra, an HIV+ artist, this feature symbolizes the choices each of us has in how we view and respond to life’s circumstances. “Living with HIV and developing a long-term wellness plan with my doctors has changed my perceptions on life. I now choose to live each and everyday with a positive spirit, and I’m positive that I am better for it. That’s the power of Pozitivity that I hope to share.”

Brett Klein, President of the Dining Out For Life International Board of Directors, stated, “We are fortunate to have the support of our volunteer spokespeople, and are especially grateful for Mondo’s advocacy on behalf of our family of HIV/AIDS Service Organizations and the millions of people living with or impacted by HIV/AIDS that they serve.”

Civil Rights Leader Rev. Dr. William Barber to Keynote 2017 Creating Change Conference

The National LGBTQ Task Force has announced that Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Creating Change Conference, the nation’s largest gathering for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) activists and allies. Barber, who serves as the President of the North Carolina NAACP and is best known for leading the “Moral Monday” movement, will speak in front of thousands of attendees on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.

“We are facing a pivotal moment in the history of our nation—one where we must work even more closely together to defeat the opponents of progress. Dr. Barber is a leader who brings an amazing array of people together for change. We are very excited to hear his inspirational words as our keynote speaker at Creating Change 2017,” said Rea Carey, National LGBTQ Task Force Executive Director.

In 2013, Barber began organizing weekly “Moral Monday” protests at the North Carolina Capitol in Raleigh against Governor Pat McCrory and the legislature’s attempts to roll back major advances in civil rights, education, healthcare, and voting rights. The protests began with a small group of clergy and activists and grew to thousands the following months. The Moral Monday protests have since inspired similar movements in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and elsewhere, in response to lawmakers seeking to deny historically marginalized communities their basic rights, legal protections, and critical human services.

Since 1988, the Creating Change Conference has grown from 300 people to over 4,000 attendees. For more than a quarter century, the organization has trained over 60,000 activists and community leaders from across the country and elsewhere in the world. Previous conference keynote speakers include actress/activist Laverne Cox, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) President Thomas Saenz, former U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan, former NAACP President Ben Jealous, and Civil Rights icons Coretta Scott King and Dolores Huerta.

HIV & PrEP: Denver Brings It Up

Let's talk. No, let's really talk. About HIV. While we have come far, gay and bisexual men continue to bear the greatest burden of this disease in Colorado. Nearly four of out of every five individuals newly diagnosed with HIV identifies as a gay or bisexual man. We still have more work to do to get that number to zero. Let's work together to change the future of HIV/AIDS by talking about testing, PrEP and staying in care.

Since talking about HIV in the heat of the moment can be a buzz kill, why not bring it up before you get it up? By bringing it up, everyone wins.

Nice To See StevieB: Train

By StevieB

I always thought living in proximity to a train track sounded romantic. I once had a house out in the country. At night, when the wind was just right, I could hear the far away call on the train whistle. Its lonesome call in the middle of the night evoked a call to iindividualisticwandering on a Jack Kerouac scale of fiction. No matter how stressful my life was, I could sit in my bed late at night and escape to a dream like world as the drifting call of a train whistle mixed with the late-night breeze. Blowing the sheers. Calming my busy brain.

When the roommate and I were looking for new place to rent, I was excited to see an opening in a building within walking distance to a train stop. Just two blocks down, and we could be on a train platform that would whisk us to either Denver’s city center, or Denver’s Airport. I was also secretly excited that my train, the one from my late night visits would be back.

The first night in the new place I drifted off to sleep with the window open.
HHHHOOOOONNNNKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I startled awake! The frickin’ train sounded as if it were running through the driveway. Why would moving next to the stupid train tracks be a smart move? All night a train horn blared every fifteen minutes. All night every night. Since this Jack Kerouac nightmare started in June, I have now become accustom to the late night train whistle. I drift off to my dream like world as train cars full of passengers make their way to and from the airport. Horns ablazing.
