Travel: Detours Announces the Start of Gay Croatia Trips

Detours Travel, a gay adventure tour operator, has announced they are launching a 7th destination with 12-day group trips starting in Croatia in summer 2016. The new destination will give their new and returning guests more holiday destinations to choose from.

Croatia has much to offer from the stunning ancient architecture, romantic cities, beautiful coastline, rich history, great food, and amazing adventure opportunities. Detours trips will give guests the chance to experience everything that Croatia has to offer with stops in the capital city of Zagreb, as well as the coastal towns of Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Zadar.

Miles Mitchinson, the Adventure Director of Detours Travel said: “Our newly announced trips will continue with the same travel concept that has made us one of the leading international gay tour operators. Our travel philosophy is more about laid-back fun and spontaneity than about a rigid daily structure.”

Thank your Denver City Council Members for Their Vote

On Monday, Denver City Council unanimously voted to support convenience and access by amending Denver’s building code to require that all new and existing single-stall restrooms provide signs designating them gender neutral.

Denver City Council will be having their final vote on this proposal next Monday. The proposed change will help decrease discrimination against transgender people – who often experience harassment when they are just trying to use the restroom – and will also benefit those in Denver who are caregivers of the elderly and disabled, parents of small children, or customers who shouldn’t have to wait in line when there is an empty single-stall restroom they could use.

This change was the result of collaboration between community leaders on Denver’s LGBTQ Commission, Councilpersons Clark and Kniech, the Mayor’s Office, and Community Planning and Development. Since 2008, transgender individuals have had the right to use the restroom of their gender in the State of Colorado, but gender-neutral single-stall restrooms create an additional choice and reflect Denver’s long-time commitment to being inclusive.

Denver will become the first city in Colorado to institute this policy, so make sure you click here to thank your city council members for voting YES.

Nice to See StevieB: The Annual Christmas Rant

By StevieB

WHAT THE F*#K DO PENGUINS HAVE TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS!?!?

Have you seen the inflatable, glowing Christmas crap that everyone displays on their front lawns? Big billowing snowmen, elves, and insidiously happy penguins. Seriously, What the heck to penguins have to do with Christmas?

At night it’s quite a cute little scene. A winter wonderland all blown up and bopping around to the forced air whooshing up their butts. During the day it’s another story, driving through any upscale neighborhood it's a reenactment of Jim Jones goes to Christmas town. Dead, flat elves and snow people scatter the lawns like a mass suicide cult hit the North Pole. A massacre of merriment. One half-inflated penguin dragging its self off the lawn coughing out,  I only live in Antarctica and parts of South America why am I even here?

Aaaaaaaaaghh!

Save the Date for One Colorado's LGBTQ Lobby Day

Join LGBTQ Coloradans, their families, and allies at the State Capitol for One Colorado's annual LGBT Lobby Day on February 27, 2017.

The only way we can shape the future of equality in Colorado is by making sure our elected representatives hear from us, so make sure you mark your calendar and sign up to join in. One Colorado provides food and training. We don't yet know all the bills One Colorado will be lobbying on this year, but we do know they will be asking legislators to support a ban on conversion therapy for minors in Colorado and to support a bill that will make it less burdensome for transgender Coloradans to update the gender on their birth certificate.

International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association receives Winq Travel Award

The International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association received the Winq Travel Award, presented in association with United Airlines, this week at Rosewood London. The UK-based magazine’s second annual event included nine awards: activism, culture, business, media, music, sport, travel, Man of the Year and an additional honor presented by the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Suki Sandhu, CEO/Founder of OUTStanding, a network of LGBT executives and allies, presented the award: "You only need to look at the so-called rights invoked in the name of 'religious freedom' to understand the value of an organization the likes of the winner of the Travel Award,” he said. “The Florida-based organization Winq awards today brings together a disparate range of airlines, hoteliers, tour operators and service providers that will love and respect you for who you are, and assures you of a warm welcome."

The other winners are: Dan Mathews of PETA, master perfumer Roja Dove, author and playwright Jonathan Harvey, journalist Owen Jones, singer/songwriter Bright Light Bright Light, Olympic gold medalist diver Chris Mears, PrEP campaigner Dr. Will Nuttall and actor, director and writer Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Game of Thrones).

"IGLTA is incredibly proud to receive this award from WINQ alongside so many noteworthy LGBT contributors to arts, culture and activism,” IGLTA President/CEO John Tanzella said. “This honor is shared with all of our tourism business members, global partners and allies in more than 70 countries who are dedicated to supporting LGBT-welcoming travel."

The just-released winter issue of Winq features an interview with Tanzella about the association and its 33-year history. Read more here

RiNo Art District's Response to Rhinoceropolis

By Jamie Licko, President, RiNo Art District

Last night, we – the staff and board of the RiNo Art District – watched the eviction of individuals from Rhinoceropolis unfold on social media and mainstream press alongside the rest of you. We did not know it was happening. We did not see it coming.
Rhinoceropolis opened in RiNo in 2005 and has defied the odds by existing as an all-ages DIY venue that has been welcoming artists and hosting performances at 3553 Brighton Blvd. It’s been the heart of the underground scene in Denver, introducing new bands and artists to the scene. It has been viewed as more than just a performance venue, but also a place for new, young artists to experiment and grow their talent. The building’s landlord has long supported the venue by providing affordable rent, creating a safe, up-to-code space, and allowing Rhinoceropolis to continue doing its thing.

We have learned that the eviction was a directive of the Deputy Chief of Police, likely a knee-jerk response to the tragedy at Ghost Ship that occurred earlier this week. While we support any effort to ensure that people are safe and protected in such spaces, we feel this rash move to evict people on a cold winter evening without reaching out to us, or other partners, to identify a solution or strategy, was a misstep.

In the last 24 hours, we have been actively engaged in a conversation about how to right this situation. By all accounts, it appears that Rhinoceropolis will be able to continue as a music venue, but not as a home. We respect both the zoning code and the rights of the property owner on that particular matter.

But this event brings to the fore a bigger conversation about the need for affordable, flexible creative space within the City of Denver, and RiNo, for artists. Rather quietly, the RiNo Art District, Business Improvement District and General Improvement District have been working on a number of initiatives to this end, even as we recognize the changing, challenging dynamics happening here. It’s time to be louder. It’s time to be bolder.

 So, here’s what happens next.
  1. We are committed to working with Rhinoceropolis, the property owner, the Denver Fire Department, the Denver Police Department and the City of Denver to reopen Rhinoceropolis as a music venue as soon as possible.
  2. We will be relooking at zoning of former industrial buildings in our neighborhood, such as the one Rhinoceropolis calls home, to identify how we can make amendments to allow for utilizing these affordable spaces as live/work places for our artist community in a safe way.
  3. With urgency, we will be continuing our conversation with the City about the importance of artist-run spaces and what we all can do to help ensure they continue to exist, in a safe, but affordable way so that our artists can live and create in our urban core. Shutting things down is not a solution. Working together, creatively, to address safety issues while allowing creative uses… IS.
We must start giving artists their fair dues. They should be supported and celebrated as culture makers and shapers. Cultural institutions like Rhinoceropolis must have a home here in Denver if we want to truly be a first-class city with a creative soul.

If you want to join the RiNo Art District in supporting this work, we need you. Contact us HERE to get involved.
