The Gay Vegans: Don't Give Up On Exercise!

By Dan HanleyAt 47 I ran my first half-marathon. I remember feeling like I was in the best health ever while training and then successfully completing the run. I loved the whole process so much that I did a second half-marathon the following year. For those of you who were reading my blog back then, you’ll remember that I did these runs as part of a fundraiser for a homeless youth agency in Denver I support. Running for a cause definitely helped!

These days, just a couple years later and now 51, I’m not as physically fit as I was back then and sometimes I feel like giving up. Not giving up on a muscle-chiseled body (I’ve never exercised for that purpose) but in the sense of the commitment and effort to work out so I stay as healthy as possible.

I’m not giving up, and neither should you.

One can be the best vegan ever and if there is no exercise going on then the health effects of being vegan will only go so far. The real reason for me not wanting to give up is because I feel so much better, both physically and mentally, when I exercise that no matter how “tough” it might be for me it is all totally worth it.

I know that life is crazy. Days fly by and before you know it a month has passed. Then a year. With work, family, traffic, activism and so on, it’s easy (at least for me) to think that there is no time to work out, or that it’s a hassle. It’s all worth it for me. Sometimes it’s a quick walk around the block from our home. Maybe it’s going up and down the stairs at work. Running is fun and for me when I run consistently I feel incredible. The gym is great. No matter what weight you can lift, it’s exhilarating! There is also yoga, swimming, racquetball and so much more! In regards to exercise, there is something for everyone.

Don’t give up. And definitely don’t shame yourself for not exercising this way or that amount of time. Exercise at a level that works for you. If I can keep it up so can you!

NCLR says NCAA threw in towel on standing up to LGBTQ discrimination

Today, the NCAA Board of Governors issued its position on recent revisions to North Carolina’s HB2, the controversial law that repealed local anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, rolled back civil rights protections for other groups, and imposed draconian restrictions on transgender people’s ability to use common restrooms in public spaces. In a press statement, the NCAA Board of Governors acknowledged that it had been “hopeful that the state would fully repeal HB2.” However, the NCAA backed down on its prior commitment and announced that it will again consider bringing NCAA championship games back to North Carolina. According to a press statement, a majority of its board of governors "reluctantly voted to allow consideration" of cities in the state.

National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell, Esq. issued the following statement in response:

“Every day, LGBTQ athletes show courage on the field, on the courts, and in competitive spaces across the country without giving up or calling it quits. But today, the NCAA threw in the towel and backed down on its promise to take a stand for LGBTQ athletes and North Carolinians.

The National Center for Lesbian Rights is deeply disappointed that the NCAA Board of Governors has chosen to stand down in the face of discrimination. But unlike the NCAA, NCLR has not thrown in the towel; we will continue our work and will hold the NCAA to its promise to ensure that any contracts in North Carolina include equal treatment of transgender athletes with regard to restrooms and in all aspects.”

B Boys - Energy

B Boys hit us with a modern take on old Beastie Boys videos with "Energy".

"We wanted the city background not only to be the scene and location of the shoot but to live and breathe as another character with all of it's grit, grime, and beauty. The overall tone is meant to be indicative of the song's title all the while balancing a line of being serious and sarcastic."

Sean Meloy to Serve as New Victory Fund Political Director

Today Victory Fund announced Sean Meloy will serve as its new Political Director, leading the organization’s efforts to recruit and elect LGBTQ people at every level of government. In his previous role as Director of LGBT Engagement at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Sean worked to ensure LGBTQ support for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

“Our endorsed candidates will benefit tremendously from Sean’s political, campaign and fundraising experience, and will advance our efforts to build LGBTQ political power across the country,” said Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, President & CEO of Victory Fund. “We know LGBTQ elected leaders are the antidote to anti-equality legislation emerging in dozens of state legislatures, so Sean will focus his attention on increasing LGBTQ representation in these low-equality states.”

Prior to joining the DNC, Sean ran two congressional races, including the reelection of Congressman Mike Doyle (PA-14) in 2010 and Kristin Cabral’s 2012 race for District 10 in Virginia. Sean has also worked on building coalitions, grassroots and digital engagement, and legislative strategy in the areas of intellectual property, telecommunications access, and community college affordability. Most recently, Sean acted as Deputy National Outreach Director for Congressman Keith Ellison in his bid for DNC Chair.

“As a staffer on the Hill and in my time at the DNC, I continuously witnessed the impact openly LGBTQ leaders have on policy and legislation that affects our lives,” said Meloy. “Now more than ever, we need LGBTQ elected officials who can be difference-makers. That is why I’m thrilled to be joining Victory Fund in its efforts to ensure LGBTQ candidates win big in 2017 and beyond.”

IGLTA Foundation Partners with Pacific Asia Travel Association for Conference Scholarship

The IGLTA Foundation has partnered with the Pacific Asia Travel Association to provide a unique opportunity for a tourism student from Nepal to participate in the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association’s 34th Annual Global Convention, set for 4-6 May in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bishrut Raj Pokhrel was selected to attend the conference, which is considered the premier educational and networking event for the global LGBTQ tourism industry.

“IGLTA’s Building Bridges Scholarship Program is a cornerstone initiative of the Foundation’s work, as we look to developing passionate and deserving individuals who will be tomorrow’s hospitality leaders focused on promoting LGBTQ tourism,” said Gary Murakami, CMP, CMM, Chair, IGLTA Foundation Board of Directors. “We value our strategic partnership with a leading organization in travel and tourism like PATA and appreciate its support of the IGLTA Foundation.”

Pokhrel is working on his bachelor’s degree in international hospitality and tourism at Silver Mountain School of Hotel Management (affiliated with Queen Margaret University) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The conference scholarship provides an all-expenses-paid trip and convention registration for the event.

“Being able to attend the IGLTA annual global conference and learn about LGBTQ tourism through first-hand experience is a wonderful opportunity for a student like me who is aspiring to lead in the hospitality and tourism industry in the future,” said Pokhrel. “Coming from a developing country where the society is largely conservative, people need to be made aware about the issue of LGBTQ tourism. The convention will give me a broader vision in understanding this aspect of tourism and how I can help LGBTQ tourism develop in my country.”

This is the fifth year the IGLTA Foundation has offered its Building Bridges Scholarship Program to tourism students and small business owners, but the first time the nonprofit has collaborated with another organization on the project. IGLTA and PATA formed a partnership in 2015 and the application process for this joint sponsorship was open to students attending educational institutions that are PATA International members.

“As PATA focuses upon the development of young tourism professionals within the region the scholarship provides the perfect opportunity for Bishrut Raj Pokhrel to broaden his horizons and gain a deeper understanding of gay and lesbian tourism, which is a significant segment of the global tourism market,” said PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy. “Our partnership with the IGLTA is a perfect example of a partnership that works to establish bridges for people of goodwill from all countries and create deeper understanding and empathy across borders.”

Nice To See StevieB: Grace, Frankie and Gravy

By StevieB

Last night the boyfriend and I were watching the final episode of Grace and Frankie. The Netflicks comedy staring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. We also were enjoying a flavorful treat from a takeout chicken joint. I had just discovered that if you dunk corn fritters into chicken gravy it can be heaven in your mouth.

Apparently I made whimpering yummy noises just at the right time. These moaning sounds came as the turning point of the television show climaxed. The boyfriend now thinks I'm deeply connected to the universe or something. I didn't correct him as I was still enjoying my gravy shrouded corn fritter.

Andreja Pejić Lands GQ Portugal April Cover And Continues To Make History

Andreja Pejic has landed a double cover of GQ Portugal April issue, making history as the first transgender model to cover the magazine. Andreja was also the first transgender model to be awarded 'Female Model Of The Year' at the GQ Portugal Awards last October in Lisbon. The April issue hits stands tomorrow.

Shot by famed photographer Branislav Simoncik, the shoot took place in Lisbon, Portugal. The double cover and eight page spread along with the in-depth interview with Andreja, is a big milestone for Andreja and also the LGBTQ community, continuing to break barriers.

"To be honest, I never expected this moment. GQ is such a classic and respected men's magazine and, while I am very proud of everything I've achieved, my modelling career has been everything but classic. So, in a way, this is a meeting of two different worlds and it represents progress," said Andreja.

For years, Andreja Pejić has been gracing the covers of top fashion and entertainment publications, including the cover of OUT Magazine where they named her one of the 100 most compelling people. New York Magazine featured Pejić on the cover as "The Prettiest Boy in the World," making her the most talked about androgynous model to date. Before her sex reassignment surgery, Pejić was the first "male model" to ever grace the cover of an Elle magazine title, and she has since landed the cover of Marie Claire Spain post-surgery. Pejić was also the first transgender model to be featured by Vogue America and the first to land a coveted cosmetic campaign, as the ambassador for Make Up For Ever.

HIV Activist/Reality Star Andrew Shayde's Graphic Novel, Monsters Among Us, Published by Gay-Owned TidalWave Productions

Andrew Shayde, who you may remember from his season on The Amazing Race, has worked in HIV/AIDS for almost 13 years and released his first graphic novel called Monsters Among Us.

TidalWave Productions, owned by gay, HIV-positive publisher Darren G. Davis, is releasing the series, which features mysterious crew comprised of gentle beasts including Bigfoot, a Chupacabra who must now unite and fight to survive.

“I love urban legends. Stories about Bigfoot or Nessie I can’t get enough of. There is a part of me that really hopes there is magic and mystery left in this world. This hope is why I wrote the series Monster Among Us. Throughout the series readers see dozens of mythical creatures and end up, most likely, rooting for them. But behind Monsters there is a very clear message about minorities and their treatment from those in power. It’s something our country is dealing with in big explosive ways right now like the stigma stilled placed on folks living with HIV/AIDS, and the backlash on the Transgender bathroom laws.” Shayde continued.

TidalWave also publishes other LGBTQ titles including Female Force: RuPaul, Lost Raven, Political Power: Anderson Cooper, The Fabulous Beekman Boys: PolkaSpot and much more.
