Wanda Sykes performs Dr. Martin Luther King's 'The Other America', free from Audible

Today, Audible announced the release of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s The Other America performed by Wanda Sykes, as a free download. This speech is an early look at The Radical King, a collection of twenty-three of Martin Luther King Jr.’s essays and speeches, curated and introduced by Cornell West, and performed by some of the most charismatic and activist actors working today including Levar Burton, Mike Coulter, Colman Domingo, Danny Glover, Gabourey Sidibe, Wanda Sykes, and Michael Kenneth Williams. The full collection will be available exclusively from Audible on April 3rd, 2018.

This collection marks the first time that the Martin Luther King Estate has allowed a dramatic interpretation of King’s words.

“Reading Dr. King’s words was extremely daunting, but if this would introduce his lesser known works to more people, then I needed to do it. I tried to channel what the words meant to me, and what he meant to me,” said Sykes.

Undies & Lube: Underwear Should Be Fun to Wear

Long gone are the days when cheap white briefs were the go-to underwear for men. Today's underwear create a display and excitement like never before. The Undies & Lube team helps you put on a good show at tonight’s scene. Or the next hottie that destiny sends your way.

From grow-ers to show-ers... Today’s modern underwear fabrics fit all kinds of shapes and sizes. They’re also designed to fit a variety of activities. Here’s what you need to know about the top fabrics and when to wear them.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fiber that doesn’t wrinkle. Today’s polyester isn’t the same cheap nasty fabric of the 60’s and 70’s. New manufacturing and weaves have created material. It lasts longer and much more durable than before.

Also gone are the boring pastel colors. Polyester can be produced in bright vibrant colors and doesn’t fade. Polyester fabric stretches, does not wrinkle, and provides that feeling of being encased without extreme sweating.

Many times it’s combined with other fabrics to add durability and structure. Thanks to new weaving patterns interlocking polyester with other fabrics. Read the label and feel the material. Get to know how polyester can provide that special night with a new twist.

Spandex

Spandex is a synthetic fiber made from polyurethane, sometimes called Elastane. It’s elastic, durable, lightweight and resistant to moisture. Almost 60 years old, Spandex has seen a major evolution in the fabric. Created to replace the use of rubber in underwear for women... Spandex became the rage once Olivia put them on in Grease.

Spandex provides little support for men by itself. Spandex is often combined with other fabrics. Offering the support people need and body hugging fabric every gay man loves. It’s breathable, draws moisture from the skin, and very form fitting.

Polyester spandex blends are used in compression shorts, swimwear. And let's not forget about underwear that puts on a show. Polyester spandex blend fabric is great for running, biking, and working out. Or just showing off in meggings.

Modal

Modal is a rayon crafted from beech trees. It's similar in texture to silk or cotton. But it's less likely to fade or shrink. Most companies combine it with spandex. Creating one of the best fabrics for everyday underwear.

Modal keeps its shape, resists wrinkles. It can be dyed in vibrant colors that don't run or fade. What you'll really notice most about this fabric... it's oh so soft on your skin.

Modal absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton and won't pill from friction. But it doesn't trap moisture and odors like cotton.

This is a luxury fabric that's comfortable to wear all day. It offers moderate support and lots of movement. Modal is not the first choice for a heavy work out such as biking, running, or cross fit. It's the perfect choice for daily activities and avoiding swamp crotch.

Nylon

Nylon material has been around for nearly 100 years, developed as an alternative to silk. It’s a synthetic fabric made from petroleum. Nylon can be made thinner than other fabrics. Making it useful for all types of underwear designs.

During heavy workouts, nylon alone will keep your skin and crotch dry. It just won’t last as long as other materials. It’s also prone to snags, pilling and tears. So it’s commonly combined with cotton to help it last longer. Nylon cotton blends provides a higher level of comfort and more breathability too.

Nylon is an okay choice for everyday underwear. But it’s a great choice for special occasions or for putting on a show. Mostly because the lower durability. You’ll get more daily mileage out of other fabrics.

Supplex® Nylon
Supplex® nylon is nylon that looks and feels like cotton fabric. It’s breathable and comfortable to wear. Supplex® nylon is perfect for every day and vigorous activities. Thanks to its stretch quality.

Supplex® nylon can take dyes and vary in thicknesses. Keeping its form and color after multiple uses. It’s also waterproof, washable, and dries quickly. Makit it perfect fabric for underwear while traveling.

Conclusion

Today you have a huge variety of colors, fits, and designs to express your sexy and active sides. When shopping for new underwear… Choose the cut that shows off your stuff and fits how you like. Pick the fabric that’s ready for the activity or event. Visit Undies & Lube and let your wildest fantasies fly.

The Gay Vegans: A Healthy Addition - Beets

By Dan Hanley

I have always loved beets.

On my journey to eating more whole foods and to embrace a more healthy lifestyle, during my last grocery outing I bought more fresh veggies than processed food. Don’t get me wrong, I love processed foods. And at 51, I am once again trying to fit them in as a treat and not part of my daily eating ritual.

The fresh veggies I purchased included beets with the greens still attached. I knew beet greens were good, and was reminded of how delicious they are when I cooked them up as a side for dinner. Simple really, just a little oil, salt, pepper and garlic and voila!

With the beets themselves, I cut them up and steamed them and added them to a few dinners during the week. Super easy and in my readings I am learning that beets can do my body good.

Check them out next time you’re in the market.

If you have a favorite beet recipe, I would love to know about it!

OUT on DVD/VOD: Just Charlie

Just Charlie from Wolfe Video on Vimeo.

Just Charlie traces with nuance and sensitivity one young person's struggle with gender identity through the lens of a gritty, sports loving blue-collar community and a tough family struggling to accept it.

Set in Tamworth, a gritty, small working class Midland town in the UK, teenage soccer star Charlie and his family see soccer as a way out of a dead end factory life for him. But Charlie is struggling with gender dysphoria, and is torn between his father's expectations and shedding his male identity. With dramatic yet surprising results for himself, his family, and his community, Charlie begins a gender transition while continuing to pursue the dream of becoming a soccer star.

Just Charlie is the feature film directorial debut of theatre & TV actress / director Rebekah Fortune. Inspired by emotional real life accounts from transgender communities, Fortune was inspired by these resonant stories to create a poignant account of one young teen's identity transition in a small, gritty British town.

Said Fortune, "Just Charlie is a film about chasing your dreams, and accepting those who are different because - sometimes - the rules on how to love, what you can do, and who you should be, are meant to be broken. This is a story about identity, who we think we are and who we really are. About being true to ones self in the face of terrible adversity."

Featuring a breakout lead performance from theatre / TV actor Harry Gilby (star of the play version of The Full Monty). This film marks his cinema debut, and he was nominated for Most Promising Newcomer at the British Film Awards.

Nice To See StevieB: Black Alert

By StevieB

I have become addicted to two new TV shows. This rarely happens because I am usually to busy to watch television. Since I have one more week until school starts, I am enjoying this time. The first is a Korean show designed for fourteen year old girls. But, since I am a fourteen year old girl, it fits. It is Boon Soon; or, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. To sum it up, it is about a Korean twenty-something that has super powers. She needs to hide these powers from the dreamy boy she loves. Hilarity ensues. The next, is an easy guess. The new Star Trek Discovery. Although the last episode left me a bit bored. I do; however, love one new aspect, since we (Star Trek nerds) know the RED-ALERT announcement, it was exciting to hear a new alert. BLACK-ALERT! BLACK-ALERT! This announcement is when the ship jumps in a new, unseen way for the Star Trek universe.

This immediately made me want to make this sound as a new ring tone. Having my phone loudly ring "black-alert" with the computer background noise, was super-cool. This to replace my traditional, Star Trek "red-alert" ring tone.

I, being super proud of finding this ring tone online, then having to download conversion apps, wanted to show off my new ring tone to the boyfriend last night. Filled with pride, I launched my new BLACK-ALERT sound. Sure he was going to be proud of my nerdiness and also connect it to the new Star Trek Discovery show. "Baby, you want your phone to announce black alert?" He paused to let that sink in. It did not sink into my brain. "Baby. Your phone is going to scream, 'black' alert?!"

Oh God.... I didn't even....

I guess I wont have a Star Trek black alert ring tone.

The Gay Vegans: 22 Years Vegan

By Dan Hanley

As in many things, if you don’t die, you get to celebrate more and more anniversaries.

This week I celebrate 22 years of being vegan. If you stay vegan and don’t die, this is what can happen.

I became vegan because of animals, in that I wanted to be as least complicit as possible in their torture and suffering.

The world has obviously changed since I became vegan. I recently heard ona podcast that from 1996 to 2016 dairy milk sales dropped 25%. That’s intense. And that makes me happy.

The bigger changes in my life since becoming vegan are not so drastic. I’m married to another vegan, although he was not vegan when we started to date. We cook more at home than going out. We try, and mostly succeed, in eating more whole foods and less processed foods, although I must say that I love some processed foods. And desserts.

I’m not a perfect vegan and that is not my goal. I want to be the best I can be, be an amazing husband, be a voice for the voiceless, and share things I learn through this blog. I want to do as little harm as possible to animals, humans, and the earth and I want to be of greatest service to others.

My veganism continued beyond a few weeks because of kind people, vegan potlucks, learning to cook, and keeping in mind that my veganism is bigger than me, that my food choices prior to being vegan included paying people to kill animals who did not want to die just for my taste buds.

On this blog I try to provide some helpful websites. If you’re interested click the page at the top.

Thanks for reading.

P.S. The photo is of me and Lilly, the day we adopted her from the Pasadena Humane Society in September of 2017. She is not as terrified these days.

Queer and Trans Activists to Descend on Trump Hotel and #WERKforConsent

Werk for Peace and the National LGBTQ Task Force will hold a massive demonstration outside the Trump Hotel at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW on Saturday, January 27 at 12:45 PM to spotlight consent. The dancers will be clad in rainbow paraphernalia, dance to empowering beats, and will be sure to leave behind bucketfuls of biodegradable confetti.

Firas Nasr, founding organizer of WERK for Peace, says, “From rescinding protections of trans youth to permitting discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in healthcare, the administration has made it clear that they are actively opposed to our communities and are working to zap our bodily autonomy. We will dance to send a clear message that this bigotry will not be tolerated. In addition, with a serial sexual predator in the White House, our protest will highlight the sexual violence we experience and will create space for healing in the community through consent and movement.”

“Consent, body autonomy, and safety are cornerstones of the LGBTQ movement, and Donald Trump is the antithesis to our vision of freedom, justice, and equality,” says, Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force. The event will include national LGBTQ activists who are attending the Task Force’s 30th Annual Creating Change Conference. The convening spotlights the need for justice and bodily autonomy on multiple fronts, including reproductive justice, anti-discrimination, and disability justice.

The protestors will also target the Wilson building to press the District Council, where two bills are currently being considered to decriminalize sex work and to address sexual and hate-based harassment on a citywide level.

The event invite states: It’s time to come together and demand a world where no one has to say #MeToo. We’re calling on our federal government and our local government to believe survivors and pass legislation to address sexual violence using a public health approach that doesn’t increase criminalization and works to build consent culture. All bodies, genders, sexualities, and expressions are welcome.

Superbowl News You Can Use via Hornet

Proving that the LGBTQ community really does follow sports, gay social network Hornet surveyed its users to gather their thoughts and expectations for one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the Super Bowl. In addition to the typical questions, Hornet had a bit of fun with the survey by polling users with questions like which team has the sexiest quarterback (a position we can all get behind), all-time favorite half time performance (we’ll try and keep our Poker Face) and more.

Below are the highlights from the survey:
• Nearly 40% of participants are rooting for the Eagles while only 20% prefer the Patriots
• 45% of the surveyed users found Tom Brady to be the sexier quarterback than the 24% who preferred Nick Foles
• The Philadelphia Eagles edged out the New England Patriots when it came to which uniforms users liked more – 37% for the Eagles vs. 34% for the Patriots
• Lady Gaga was picked as the favorite halftime performance over the last five years.
• 35% of participants would prefer Janet Jackson to perform alongside JT vs. Justin Timberlake’s solo act for this year’s Half Time Show.
