Books: 'Dark Rainbow: Queer Erotic Horror'

Dark Rainbow: Queer Erotic Horror is the first volume of a short fiction anthology series edited by award-winning queer writer and editor Andrew Robertson.
Published under Riverdale Avenue Books’ Afraid imprint, it features many members of the Horror Writers Association along with writers from all over the world.

Dark Rainbow contains 15 tales of dark appetites, hidden fantasies, sex and slashers including new work from Angel Leigh McCoy, Jeff C. Stevenson, Sèphera Girón, Julianne Snow, Derek Clendening, Spinster Eskie, Lindsay King-Miller and many more.

"There has always been a special relationship between queer culture and horror, said Writer and Editor Andrew Robertson. “ Horror is a genre about the ‘other’ and being a part of queer culture often comes with feelings of ‘otherness’ or being an outsider based on your desires…maybe you see a freak on screen during a midnight madness screening and you think to yourself, Well, I feel like a freak too. Maybe the monster is just misunderstood. We are all hunger for something, right?”

Downloads are available on Amazon, Barnes & Nobles Nook, iTunes, Kobo and wherever e-books are downloaded.

Amandla Stenberg to be Honored by The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project will honor Amandla Stenberg with the Youth Innovator Award and AT&T Mobility & Entertainment President David Christopher with the 20/20 Visionary Award for their commitment to supporting the nonprofit’s mission to provide crisis intervention services and end suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people. The honors will be presented at TrevorLIVE Los Angeles, hosted by Eugene Lee Yang on Dec. 2 at The Beverly Hilton, with a special appearance by “Superstore” actors Nico Santos and Lauren Ash during the program. It was previously announced that Ryan Murphy and the cast of “POSE” will also be honored.

“We're excited to honor Amandla for consistently using her platform to advocate for LGBTQ young people, and AT&T for its long history of supporting the LGBTQ community and Trevor’s crisis services,” said Amit Paley, CEO and Executive Director of The Trevor Project. “Led by Eugene, who dedicates his time and work to improving the lives of LGBTQ people everywhere, the evening is sure to be a fun and memorable celebration of The Trevor Project’s life-saving work on our milestone 20th anniversary.”

Stenberg can currently be seen in 20th Century Fox’s influential film “The Hate U Give” which premiered this year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, she was recently seen in Amma Asante’s WWII drama “Where Hands Touch,” which also premiered at TIFF. In October 2018 she appeared on the cover of Time Magazine as a Next Generation Leader and has been recognized globally for her crusade towards sparking thoughtful conversation using social media as a platform to spread awareness and knowledge on topics such as cultural appropriation, intersectional feminism, mindfulness, biracial identity, sexual identity, gender and beauty standards to name few. She has been recognized with Teen Choice Awards, a BET Award and NAACP Image Award for her work.

“I’m so profoundly honored to be recognized by The Trevor Project, an organization I admire and whose work is so critical,” said Stenberg. “Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that LGBTQ youth have a safe space where they can find a sense of being when they feel lost or alone.”

Christopher, President of Mobility & Entertainment, will accept the 20/20 Visionary Award on behalf of AT&T. AT&T’s commitment to The Trevor Project, and other socially conscientious initiatives, is the latest in its exceptional history of supporting the LGBTQ community. In 1975, AT&T was one of the very first American companies to prohibit discrimination against employees based on sexual orientation. In 1998 they adopted one of the very first domestic partner benefits programs for LGBTQ employees. And in 2006 AT&T was one of the first companies to offer transgender-inclusive health care benefits. Supporting the LGBTQ community is an enduring priority at AT&T, continuously working to identify ways to advocate and foster inclusivity.

“I’m proud to accept this award on behalf of AT&T,” said Christopher. “At AT&T, we strongly believe in equality for all and The Trevor Project’s life-saving work. Together we’ve been able to do something meaningful by expanding support for at-risk LGBTQ youth. As more and more of us join together in support of The Trevor Project, we will continue to truly make a difference.”

OUT on DVD/VOD: Martyr

For Hassane, a young man from an impoverished neighborhood, life has stopped making sense. All he has left is a close group of friends, brought together by a shared sense of marginalization and hopelessness. Hassane's strange sudden drowning at Beirut's rocky shore sparks a mob procession and strips apart the bond of youth and friendship, forcing his friends to grapple with loss and powerlessness, and with the cold heavy truth of their friend's dead body. The funeral is transformed into a heartfelt farewell to the beauty and sensuality of life, youth, friendship, and love.

DNC on Transgender Day of Remembrance

DNC LGBTQ Media Director Lucas Acosta released the following statement to
commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“Today we honor all the lives of transgender and gender non-conforming people lost this year to hatred and violence. As we commit ourselves to continuing the fight for equality, we must not forget an epidemic of anti-trans violence remains all too prevalent in our country and disproportionately affects transgender  women of color.
“For decades, the LGBTQ community and its allies have fought for the promise of true equality and protection from discrimination and violence. Thanks to these efforts, we’ve come a long way as a nation, passing legislation like the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act and working to make schools, workplaces, and communities safer for LGBTQ Americans. Sadly, days like today, as we commemorate the lives stolen by hatred and bigotry, we realize there is much more work to be done.

“President Trump and his administration have sought to roll back hard-won progress, erase the transgender community, and fan the flames of hatred and bigotry. But earlier this month, America rejected President Trump’s failed leadership and elected a record number of LGBTQ candidates to Congress, governor’s mansions, and statehouses across the country. And House Democrats have already made the Equality Act, which would create federal protections from discrimination on the basis of gender identity, a top priority in the next Congress. As we observe this Transgender Day of Remembrance, Democrats are proud to recommit ourselves to the fight for the safety and equality of every individual, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. The transgender community will not be erased.”

The Gay Vegans: NYC Vegan Cookbook Review

By Dan Hanley

Before I begin I’d like to give those of you new to The Gay Vegans blog a friendly reminder that I am not a professional book reviewer. I hardly ever will review a cookbook, in fact this is only the second one in six years of having my blog. I write this not to lower your expectations for what you are about to read but to put a spotlight on this specific cookbook, one I am ecstatic to still be exploring.

“NYC Vegan” is full of recipes that make me salivate while turning the pages. Before agreeing to support the book’s blog tour, Mike and I had already pre-ordered copies and were super excited when our copy came. We wanted the cookbook because we have been following Michael and Ethan on social media for years, paying special attention to all of the amazing food they would share. Another reason we wanted the cookbook was because Michael and Ethan are two of the most compassionate people we know, and we have been fortunate to have spent a little time with them. We knew their new cookbook would be a great addition to anyone who includes compassion while cooking.

“NYC Vegan” brings me to New York City. It also brings me into the lives of Michael and Ethan, which is awesome. I love the personal notes from them that are scattered throughout the book. With these and the little bit I know about them, I all of a sudden had a list of the recipes I wanted to try.

It won’t be a surprise to anyone who knows me that of all of the recipes in the book I chose the Diner-Style pancakes to try first. I am a pancake guy. Recipes on my list to try next are the Lasagna, the Shepherdless Pie and the Colcannon. I loved reading the Colcannon recipe! I’m Irish and have never heard about it. Reading through the cookbook I learned so many other things, always a treat.

Important factors about a cookbook that I would promote to friends and family include the ingredients (would I already have them in the house and/or are they easy to find) as well the ease of the recipe. Most times I just want to make a meal so it has to be easy, and easy for me means really easy.

The Diner-Style Pancakes in “NYC Vegan” meet both of these factors. We had all of the ingredients and I think most of you will have them. The recipe was easy to follow and I never felt that I was lost or couldn’t understand something. The last thing you want to feel when trying a new recipe is stupid.

Before I knew it, I was handing Mike a plate of pancakes. I added blueberries, which is usual for me and pancakes. They were delicious and I will try their suggested additions of chocolate chips, strawberries or bananas in the weekends to come.

Aside from the recipes, the layout of the book, the photography and the information on culinary New York City all added to why I love this book. “NYC Vegan” provides an escape to the flavors and cuisines of New York City.

I will keep you posted as I try more of the recipes in “NYC Vegan”. If you’re up to try something new and you will take the time to try these amazing recipes, order a copy of “NYC Vegan” and let me know which recipes you try. If you would like to buy a copy of “NYC Vegan” click here:

Firehouse Theater's 'The Christmas Spirit' opens this weekend

When the Angel of Death, Jack, arrives at the Dowling home on Christmas Eve, his routine soul collection is derailed when he meets his match in the 72-year-old Long Island widow, Julia. Determined to spend one last Christmas surrounded by her loving family, Julia buys an extra day on earth, extending an invitation to Jack to be her guest for a traditional Christmas dinner. Having never been invited, well, to anything, Jack is intrigued and accepts. What happens next is anything but traditional. Good intentions run amuck as familial buttons get pushed, personalities clash, fuses run short, and buried secrets are revealed. Jack has his work cut out for him juggling the family members to fall in line with the Norman Rockwell ideal that is Julia’s dying wish. With some heavenly support and a hand full of M&Ms, he manages to give Julia the best Christmas gift of all.

“A farce, a romantic comedy, a love story, with a dash of heartwarming insight, The Christmas Spirit is an invitation to embrace family, celebrate life, and rekindle our humanity. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, your heart will grow three times its normal size,” says Director Peter J. Hughes.

CNN's Don Lemon, Randy Rainbow, John Waters and Janelle Monae Among 20 LGBTQ Icons Honored in Metrosource Mag's annual People We Love

For 16 years running, Davler Media Group’s Metrosource, the largest circulation LGBTQ publication serving New York City and Los Angeles, and second largest nationally, has ended each year with People We Love.  In the December/January issue, and on  metrosource.com, People We Love honors the people and organizations who display extraordinary acts of service and philanthropy, raise awareness about LGBTQ rights and culture and model excellence in being part of the LGBTQ community.

The cover story subject of 2018’s People We Love is veteran CNN anchor Don Lemon, an openly gay journalist who has demonstrated exceptional courage in President Trump’s ongoing battles with his network and the media at large.   Lemon is in the unique and unenviable position of being a direct target of both the President’s barbed tweets and, in October as he was being interviewed by the magazine, of  Florida terrorist Cesar Sayoc.

“I have been in this business for 27 years, and I’ve only had credible threats against me for the first in the past couple of years,” laments Lemon in the article. “I have security now – for the first time.  You know the only difference now versus the other 25 years or so… is Donald Trump.”

“I’ve been poor,” he tells Metrosource. ”I have had to deal with abuse. … I’ve had to deal with loss. I’ve had to deal with discrimination and racism. I’ve had to deal with homophobia. But I think that makes me a pretty good person to deliver the news to the American people, because most of the people in my audience have had to deal with those things.”

‘If you’re critical of others, you should expect the same,” says Lemon. “But I do have to say as much discrimination as there is towards gay people – and it’s awful – I have received far more for being a person of color that for being a gay man.”

Metrosource’s interview with Lemon goes beyond politics, delving into his youth in Louisiana, his coping with abuse during these years and his current happiness off-camera with his partner, real estate agent Tim Malone.

The other honorees featured in People We Love 2018 include filmmaker and gay icon John Waters, musician and actress Janelle Monáe, actress Samira Wiley of Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale, veteran British actor Rupert Everett, columnist Michael Musto, comedians Cameron Esposito and Hannah Gadsby and new media figures like YouTube satirist Randy Rainbow and blogger Kenneth Walsh.  Also spotlighted are lesser known but mightily impactful community leaders and organizations including Leo Preziosi, founder of the student advocacy organization Live Out Loud, LGBTQ legal advocacy organization Lambda Legal, LGBTQ scholarship organization The Point Foundation, and SAGE, an organization providing support to the elder LGBTQ community.

Metrosource’s People We Love also cast a spotlight on Olympian and Dancing with the Stars winner Adam Rippon, President & CEO of NYC & Company Fred Dixon, the entire cast and creative team of the FX series Pose, NYC Promoter Brandon Voss, and Doctor Evan Goldstein.  The final honoree will be determined by the public, which can head to https://metrosource.com/legendaryqueens to cast a vote for their favorite New York City Drag Queen.  The legends nominated include Sherry Vine, Hedda Lettuce, Lypsinka, Shequida, Tina Burner, Lady Bunny and Joey Arias.   All who cast a vote will be entered to win a pair of VIP tickets to the People We Love gala on January 15, 2019.

“Creating our annual ‘People We Love’ list is a true privilege and pleasure,” says Paul Hagen, Editor-In-Chief of Metrosource.  “It’s the time when we recognize the people who are going to exceptional ends to do great things for the LGBTQ community.  It’s not only a salute to high-profile names in entertainment and media, but a spotlight on the many activists whose efforts mean so much to the day-to-day well-being of our community.”

Victory Fund Releases Candidate Data on 2018 Rainbow Wave; 244 Out LGBTQ Candidates Won Elected Office in 2018

Today LGBTQ Victory Fund released a demographic and informational breakdown of the 432 openly LGBTQ candidates on the ballot this past Election Day – looking at sexual orientation, gender identity, race/ethnicity, office level, party affiliation, and the equality levels of the states they ran in. Of those, 244 won, including 162 victorious Victory Fund endorsed candidates. Previously, Victory Fund released data on its endorsed candidates, but the data released today looks at all known openly LGBTQ candidates who were on the ballot on November 6.

The breakdown of data is below. A visual representation of the data is available at victoryfund.org/rainbowwave.

Among the key takeaways from the new data:
• 56.5 percent of known openly LGBTQ candidates won their races on Election Day, and 72.0 percent of Victory Fund endorsed candidates were successful;
• 136 of the 244 victorious candidates are non-incumbents and 79.3 percent of incumbent candidates won their races;
• LGBTQ men ran in higher numbers than LGBTQ women, yet women candidates won at a higher rate (63.4 percent to 56.7 percent);
• 25.0 percent of LGBTQ candidates who ran were people of color and 56.5 percent won their races; and
• 86.1 percent of LGBTQ candidates ran as Democrats and 61.0 percent won, whereas 5.3 percent of LGBTQ candidates ran as Republicans and just 17.4 percent won.

“Never in our nation’s history have so many openly LGBTQ people decided to run for office and be the change they demand to see in the world – and we are determined to ensure this energy does not fade,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund. “We were able to ensure many of these leaders crossed the finish line on Election Day, and importantly, LGBTQ incumbents were overwhelmingly reelected by voters in states both red and blue.”

“While the Rainbow Wave of LGBTQ candidates who ran this year was the most diverse ever, there is still a long way to go before equitable representation for our entire community is achieved. It is vital we recruit and train more LGBTQ people of color, women and trans candidates because America needs their voices in the halls of power. LGBTQ political power is growing and we are ready to flex our muscles in local government, state Houses and the U.S. Congress, but as believers in the power of representation, we know LGBTQ candidates and elected officials must reflect our beautifully diverse community.”

Nice to See StevieB: Suit and Tie

By StevieB

I am currently in a multi-stage interviewing process with four separate new positions outside of my current company. Have conservative suit; will travel. The quick answer is that I am desperate to work on a team that doesn’t end their sentences with prepositions. If I get asked "where you at?" one more time…. Truthfully I am happy in my current position, (sort-of) but I need to grow, and it’s apparent this cannot happen.

For one position within a multi-state eating disorder recovery corporation, I feel I have now interviewed with every member of staff. I mean, I haven’t met ALL the janitorial staff, maybe next week. For all these interviews I figured it would be okay if I wear the same suit every time, I just switch out the tie. It is me just stopping by their headquarters every once in a while to hang out. Another is a non-profit education company. Also multiple interviews. Glenda on the first floor reception says I’m the best candidate, but if she hears anything she’ll let me know… I’m going to start bring her doughnuts.

Their problem is understandable. You cannot interview a HR Manager. Every question they give me, I am just hardwired to give the best response for the sake of the printed interview questionnaire. My dream is that a CEO will just come out and say "Look, you’re the person that should be doing the interviewing of candidates, just come out and tell me what you’re gonna do for me!" And, I’d tell them the good about me and the bad about me. I’ll put myself in payroll and send my interview suit to the drycleaner. Because it’s beginning to stink.Until then, I interview. Again. And again. I hope to have good news for you soon.
