The Gay Vegans: The Execution of Jamal Khashoggi

By Dan Hanley

There are many things that have disturbed me in the past couple of years, yet few have risen to the level of outrage as the execution of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the government responses afterwards.

Long before I became an animal rights activist I was a human rights activist. I know how dangerous the world can be for journalists. Even though I did not know him, I’m pretty sure Mr. Khashoggi knew this too. I am also pretty sure he had no idea he would be brutally executed when walking into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. (He actually said he had no concerns.)

When I first started hearing this story, my initial thoughts were based in past hopes and ignorance. There was no way the Saudi government would do this, and certainly once public and proven, there was no way our government would support it. Of course I was wrong, holding on to past ideals that in this world we live in today no longer exist. This was also a reminder to me that the Saudi government executing someone or committing human rights violations is no surprise. Also, the list is long of Saudi activists who are in jail.

I am heart broken that our government has done nothing to support Mr. Khashoggi, and instead has taken the side of his executioners.

Some say there is nothing we can do. That would be the worst if true. I don’t believe that.

My hope with this quick blog post is that more people will learn of this atrocity and will share my outrage. That we as citizens will speak loudly to those who “represent” us and send a clear message that no, we as a country do not support this execution or the government that ordered it. This execution will not be supported in our name.

If you share my outrage and have a quick second, please let your Congressperson and Senators know. You can reach your Congressperson by calling 202-225-3121, and US senators by calling 202-224-3121. Ask the operator to connect you to their office.

Mr. Khashoggi is survived by his fiance, four children, and many colleagues and friends around the world who adore him.

IGR Congratulates Rugby Community for Standing United Against Discrimination and Hate-Crime

International Gay Rugby (IGR) has applauded all unions, its member clubs and World Rugby, for standing together and standing united, against discrimination and hate-crime.

This comes after a week-long campaign by IGR, to urge all national teams to wear rainbow laces ahead of their weekend fixtures, to show support for former Wales international Gareth Thomas, who was the victim of a homophobic attack in Cardiff last weekend.

IGR clubs around the world will also be wearing the laces for their own matches and organising awareness raising activities within their local communities.

Thomas himself, has said he is “honoured” by the initiative.

“We are incredibly humbled and encouraged by the support and solidarity shown towards Gareth and the LGBT+ community this week, with World Rugby and every national union supporting our initiative,” says Ben Owen, IGR Chair.

“Rugby truly is a sport for all where everyone is welcome, regardless of age, race, ability, or gender identity and sexual orientation,” he says.

The following Unions have offered rainbow laces to their players:

  • Canada
  • England
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • New Zealand
  • Scotland
  • Spain
  • Wales
  • USA

“This weekend is all about showing to the world, rugby’s shared values of solidarity and respect, firmly saying no to discrimination and hate-crime,” adds Owen.

“We are incredibly encouraged by the response this week and shall continue to work with our member clubs, World Rugby and the national unions to promote tolerance, understanding and acceptance, both on and off the rugby field.”

Nice To See StevieB: Not That Cool

By StevieB

I posted a picture online recently. It depicts the new snowboard rack I had installed on top of my Alltrack. I really didn’t think about it, mostly because the intent was to show off my roof-rack installing skills. Yet, I would never dream of strapping a laminated plank to my feet and slide down a frozen mountain. No thank you. Soon the comments and questions came in about my snowboarding prowess. I installed the rack so that the boyfriend could take my all wheel drive up the mountain. So, even though I am now one of those Colorado dudes driving around with a roof-rack, it's not really mine.

DNC on DOJ Request to Implement Trans Military Ban

Friday, the Department of Justice requested the U.S. Supreme Court review President Trump’s ban on transgender people from serving in the military. Currently, there are 3 cases navigating the federal judicial system. This request, if granted, would allow the cases to skip the traditional process and review of the various regional U.S. Courts of Appeals.

In response, DNC Chair Tom Perez; DNC Secretary Jason Rae and DNC LGBTQ Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes released the following statement:

“This ban goes against our values as a nation and has already been struck down by several lower courts. But now the Trump administration wants to bypass those courts in an effort to discriminate against the brave transgender troops serving our country.

“We are confident that the appellate court would follow the lower courts and side with the rule of law. Around the world, transgender service members are separated from their families in order to serve our country. Those who put their lives on the line and defend our right to live freely should be able to serve freely.

Discrimination is not a national security strategy and has no place in our country.”
