Greg Dulli - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

This morning Afghan Whigs leader Greg Dulli debuts the video to his version of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” The clip was directed by Philip Harder.

“I saw Meet Me In St. Louisas a child and this song just stayed with me forever,” Dulli remarked. “It has a spectral quality that I always wanted to exaggerate.”

Service Members Living with HIV Fired Just Before the Holidays

Today, OutServe-SLDN AND Lambda Legal, with partner law firm Winston & Strawn, filed a lawsuit on behalf of two HIV-positive members of the United States Air Force who were given discharge orders just days before the holiday season. Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN filed the lawsuit, Roe and Voe v. Mattis, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The case was filed anonymously to protect the plaintiffs’ medical privacy. As detailed in a Washington Post exclusive, the plaintiffs received notification just days before Thanksgiving, denying their discharge appeals despite compliance with fitness assessments and medical treatment, as well as strong support from commanding officers. Nevertheless, the plaintiffs were found “unfit for continued military service.”

“Anyone willing to put their life on the line to defend our country deserves respect, not discrimination,” said Peter Perkowski, Legal & Policy Director of OutServe-SLDN. “These Airmen are acknowledged leaders and good at their jobs. They have served honorably for many years. They have the support of their commanders and medical personnel, who state that having HIV will not affect their ability to do their jobs. There is simply no justification for this decision.”

The lawsuit challenges the Pentagon’s discriminatory deployment policies, which prevent Service members living with HIV from deploying outside the United States without a waiver. For years, these policies have restricted the opportunities of Service members with HIV. Now these same deployment restrictions are being used to justify separating Service members solely based on HIV status.   The “Deploy or Get Out” policy, unveiled by the Trump administration in February 2018, directs the Pentagon to identify service members who cannot be deployed to military posts outside of the United States for more than 12 consecutive months and to separate them from military service. Since current U.S. military policy identifies service members living with HIV as non-deployable, they face immediate discharge under this Trump policy.

OutServe-SLDN is also an organizational plaintiff in this case to advance the interests of its members who are living with HIV and serving in the military.  Along with Harrison v. Mattis and Deese and Doe v. Mattis, this is the third lawsuit that OutServe-SLDN and Lambda Legal have brought to challenge military policies that discriminate against people living with HIV.

“It’s disgusting that the Trump Administration is sending some men and women in uniform home for the holidays without jobs simply because of their HIV status,”said Scott Schoettes, Counsel and HIV Project Director at Lambda Legal. “These decisions should be based on science, not stigma. Lambda Legal is suing to stop these separations and will keep fighting until President Trump understands that there’s not a job in the world a person living with HIV cannot safely perform, including the job of soldier.”

The case is entitled Roe and Voe v. Mattis, et al.  Joining Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN on the legal team are attorneys from Winston & Strawn LLP, serving as pro bono counsel.

PetSmart Charities Helps Pets in Need at DFL Solutions

PetSmart Charities awarded a $25,000 grant to the Dumb Friends League Solutions – Veterinary Hospital. The hospital, which opened in October 2018, is a full service low cost animal hospital that exists to prevent suffering in pets whose caretakers would otherwise be unable to provide veterinary care.

PetSmart Charities is the largest funder of animal welfare in North America, supporting community efforts in all 50 states and Canada. Their generous gift directly impacts pets in need, like Molly.

When the adorable 7-year-old shih-tzu was critically injured by another animal, Molly’s owner, Vannessa, was unable to afford the care the little dog required. Vannessa made the difficult phone call to schedule an appointment to surrender Molly to the Dumb Friends League and explained why she was relinquishing her beloved pet. It was then she learned about another option available to her and Molly – Solutions – Veterinary Hospital.

Vannessa rushed Molly to the Veterinary Hospital. During the initial exam, doctors discovered that in addition to her critical injuries, Molly had mammary tumors—most likely the result of not being spayed. The staff provided care for Molly’s injuries, removed her mammary masses and performed her spay surgery.

Without Solutions – Veterinary Hospital, Molly’s owner would have been left with no other choice but to break the 7-year bond she had formed with her pet. “Sometimes people surrender animals to us because they can’t afford medical care,” said Dr. Apryl Steele, Dumb Friends League President and CEO. “This hospital exists for people struggling to help their pets. Our goal is to help people and pets stay together and provide care that alleviates and prevents suffering for animals in need.”

“Some people are not able to easily access veterinary resources for a variety of reasons,” said Jenny Aho, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities. “The work of the Dumb Friends League will provide veterinary care for thousands of Denver pets who may otherwise have limited options, allowing them to stay in loving homes.”

Rubblebucket - Party Like Your Heart Hurts

2018 has seen Rubblebucket release the critically acclaimed new LP Sun Machine (Grand Jury Music) and in support, tour North America playing to packed rooms from coast to coast. Today the band are happy to announce a 2019 tour that kicks off March 13 in Rochester, NY and concludes in Richmond, VA on April 12. These dates are in addition to the two previously announced shows -- January 25 at the Paradise in Boston, MA and January 26 at Brooklyn's Brooklyn Steel. All dates are listed below.

Today the band share a peak of what their explosive show looks like via a live video for "Party Like Your Heart Hurts" (which on release landed a New Music Friday nod). Today's clip was shot at Union Transfer in Philadelphia and debuted via Relix who called Sun Machine "introspective and upbeat." The band's Kal Traver told them, "I had an image of a Gaiman-esque flirtation between a normal guy and a woman who was secretly a million years old and has seen the earth crumble decay and spring forth again over & over and who has exploded many men's lives (in a good way) and who isn't really a woman, she is actually a certain facade of Earth it's self, as we all are. And she takes this guy home and shows him a wild night where time stands still and they make a kind of love that crumbles his former egoic existence and he is reborn as a self-contained loving parent child continuum, and at the end of it all she steps out onto the sidewalk and finds herself lonely again."

Nice to See StevieB: Two Things This Week

By StevieB

Two things are bugging me this week. The first is my ski rack on the top of my car. It whistles. At highway speeds a high pitch squeal begins to sound above my head. "Okay, I guess I need to buy an air screen to change to air dinamics." I casually thought. Then I discovered that my VW cross bars don’t work with my Thule racks and $90 new air screen. I have spent this week attempting to find a way to attach the two without using duct tape.

The second is porn. My porn. I have unique tastes in porn; which has been satisfied for free via Tumblr. The site; however, just announced that they will be deleting all graphic content. Meaning, all the tumblr pages that I follow will go away on the 17th of December. I have spent the week grabbing as many images as I can to supply me until I can locate a new source of smut. Hundreds of gay Japanese suit porn images have been flying across my desk top. If you’re aware of a good Japanese "young businessman in suits” porn site, please be in touch. Not; however, if you’re reading this and you also happen to be one of my sisters.
