GLAAD RELEASES SECOND ANNUAL SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY INDEX: ALL PLATFORMS RECEIVE FAILING GRADES ON LGBTQ SAFETY

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today announced the findings of its second annual Social Media Safety Index (SMSI), a report on LGBTQ user safety across five major social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok.

For the full report: http://glaad.org/smsi

The 2022 SMSI introduces a Platform Scorecard developed by GLAAD in partnership with Ranking Digital Rights and Goodwin Simon Strategic Research. The Platform Scorecard utilizes twelve LGBTQ-specific indicators to generate numeric ratings with regard to LGBTQ safety, privacy, and expression. A listing of the indicators is available here and below. After reviewing the platforms on measures like explicit protections from hate and harassment for LGBTQ users, offering gender pronoun options on profiles, and prohibiting advertising that could be harmful and/or discriminatory to LGBTQ people, all platforms scored under a 50 out of a possible 100:

      Instagram: 48%

      Facebook: 46%

      Twitter: 45%

      YouTube: 45%

      TikTok: 43%

Detailed scores and a full list of Platform Scorecard indicators are available here. Indicators include:

The company should disclose a policy commitment to protect LGBTQ users from harm, discrimination, harassment, and hate on the platform.

The company should disclose an option for users to add pronouns to user profiles.

The company should disclose a policy that expressly prohibits targeted deadnaming and misgendering of other users.

The company should clearly disclose what options users have to control the company’s collection, inference, and use of information related to their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The company should disclose training for content moderators, including those employed by contractors, that trains them on the needs of vulnerable users, including LGBTQ users.

“Today’s political and cultural landscapes demonstrate the real-life harmful effects of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and misinformation online,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “The hate and harassment, as well as misinformation and flat-out lies about LGBTQ people, that go viral on social media are creating real-world dangers, from legislation that harms our community to the recent threats of violence at Pride gatherings. Social media platforms are active participants in the rise of anti-LGBTQ cultural climate and their only response should be to urgently create safer products and policies, and then enforce those policies.”

GLAAD also released new data from a May 2022 study conducted with Community Marketing & Insights. 84% of LGBTQ adults agree there are not enough protections on social media to prevent discrimination, harassment, or disinformation. 40% of all LGBTQ adults, and 49% of transgender and nonbinary people, do not feel welcomed and safe on social media. Additionally, the newly released 2022 ADL Online Hate and Harassment report found that 66% of LGBTQ users experienced harassment online, with 54% of LGBTQ users reporting severe harassment including sustained harassment, stalking, or doxxing.

The Social Media Safety Index (SMSI) was created with support from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the Gill Foundation, and Logitech. In addition to the Platform Scorecard, GLAAD’s SMSI provides specific recommendations to each platform to improve LGBTQ safety. Additional trends reported in the SMSI include:

Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric on social media translates to real-life harm, including reported levels of increased severe harassment for LGBTQ users when compared to 2021.

The problem of anti-LGBTQ hate speech and misinformation continues to be a public health and safety issue. Viral misinformation and inaccuracies have been cited as drivers of many of the nearly 250 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in states around the country this year. Platforms are largely meeting this dangerous misinformation with inaction and often do not enforce their own policies regarding such content.

Issues like the promotion of so-called “conversion therapy,” targeted misgendering and deadnaming, and lack of true transparency reporting, remain prevalent for select platforms. Only select platforms prohibit actions like targeted misgendering and the promotion of conversion therapy. These actions need to be prohibited across the industry.

Companies possess the tools they need to effectively curb anti-LGBTQ hate and rhetoric but instead are prioritizing profit over LGBTQ safety and lives.

Recommendations across platforms include:

Improve the design of algorithms that currently circulate and amplify harmful content, extremism, and hate.

Train moderators to understand the needs of LGBTQ users, and to moderate across all languages, cultural contexts, and regions.

Be transparent with regard to content moderation, community guidelines and terms of service policy implementation, and algorithm designs.

Strengthen and enforce existing community guidelines and terms of service that protect LGBTQ people and others.

Respect data privacy, especially where LGBTQ people are vulnerable to serious harms and violence. This includes ceasing the practice of targeted surveillance advertising, in which companies use powerful algorithms to recommend content to users in order to maximize profit.

The May 2021 inaugural edition of the Index was the first-ever and only tech-industry baseline of LGBTQ user safety. In this past year, GLAAD has worked with platforms and applauded major achievements within the tech accountability space, including TikTok’s amendment to its community guidelines in March 2022 in which
an explicit prohibition against targeted misgendering and deadnaming was enacted, per the 2021 SMSI’s recommendation. As noted in this year’s SMSI, such a prohibition does not exist on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube.

Congressional hearingsalarming research findings of the spread of misinformation, and massive media coverage have laid bare the urgent need for independent regulatory oversight of these companies — with virtually universal agreement about the need for industry-wide transparency and accountabilityThe GLAAD SMSI adds LGBTQ recommendations to this necessary and urgent dialogue.

To create the Social Media Safety Index, GLAAD convened an Advisory Committee of thought leaders to advise on industry and platform-specific recommendations in the Index. Committee members include ALOK, author, performer, and media personality; Lucy Bernholz, Ph.D, Director, Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford University; Alejandra Caraballo, Esq., Clinical Instructor, Cyberlaw Clinic, Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School; Jelani Drew-Davi, Director of Campaigns, Kairos; Liz Fong-Jones, Principal Developer Advocate for SRE & Observability, Honeycomb; Evan Greer, Director, Fight for the Future; Leigh Honeywell, CEO and Co-Founder, Tall Poppy; Maria Ressa, Journalist & CEO, Rappler; Tom Rielly, Founder, TED Fellows program, Digital Queers and PlanetOut.com; Brennan Suen, Deputy Director of External Affairs, Media Matters for America; Kara Swisher, contributing writer and host of the Sway podcast at The New York Times.

“All platforms should follow the lead of TikTok and Twitter and should immediately incorporate an explicit prohibition against targeted misgendering and deadnaming of transgender and non-binary people into hateful conduct policies,” said GLAAD’s Senior Director of Social Media Safety, Jenni Olson. “This recommendation remains an especially high priority in our current landscape where anti-trans rhetoric and attacks are so prevalent, vicious, and harmful. We also urge these companies to effectively moderate such content and to enforce these policies.”

Human Rights Campaign’s Legal Director to Testify in House Judiciary Committee Hearing on the Impact of Dobbs on LGBTQ+ Rights

This morning at 9 AM ET, the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing on the threat to individual rights in a post-Roe world, significantly highlighting the potential impact on the LGBTQ+ community. Human Rights Campaign Legal Director, Sarah Warbelow, will testify on how the Dobbs decision may affect LGBTQ+ civil rights, including the potential impact on Obergefell v. Hodges and Lawrence v. Texas. The other panelists to testify before the committee include Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in Obergefell v. In Justice Thomas’ concurring opinion, he invited challenges to other landmark civil rights decisions, including Griswold v. ConnecticutObergefell v Hodges and Lawrence v Texas. Lynda Carter - Human and Divine

Lynda Carter, world renowned entertainer, singer-songwriter, producer, EMMY-winning star of TV and film and overall superhero, has made one of her fiercest moves yet collaborating with GRAMMY Award-winning producer/DJ Dave Audé (Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande).  They’re gearing up for the release of a two-track multi-single of his epic remix of her poignant and striking song “Human and Divine.”  One of the most emotionally resonant songs of her career (and an epic in its own right), the recent single reflects the inspirational love of her husband, but it’s also a connection to strength and the love found in the powerful female characters in Wonder Woman.  Audé has worked his trademark magic on the track taking the rich basso profundo moments and heroic chorus of the original and created a glorious beat-driven masterpiece.

Says Carter: I’m in awe of what Dave Audé can do with a song and I’m thrilled and flattered that he connected with it instantly. He took me on a new musical journey that I am sooo in love with--it makes me want to go out to a club and let my Divine side loose on the dancefloor!”

Adds Audé: “When Lynda Carter called me to remix ‘Human and Divine,’ I knew I had to do something that lived up to the larger-than-life persona we all know and love. I was super excited to do something epic and at the same time keeping the spirit of the original. Immediately I felt a James Bond goes to the club vibe, so I ran with that and made sure that there were plenty of dramatic moments in the remix. I don’t think I ever could have imagined the end result and the journey it took to create this one was one I won’t soon forget.”

GLAAD RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT BIDEN’S EXECUTIVE ORDER PROTECTING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE AND ABORTION ACCESS

GLAAD, the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, is responding to President Biden’s Executive Order on Protecting Access to Reproductive Healthcare Services signed this morning. The order expands protections for medication abortion, contraception, emergency medical services, and patient privacy. The order also makes it clear that the Biden administration will direct legal resources to support efforts to bring court challenges against state and local healthcare restrictions, a fact sheet on the White House website explains.

Quote from GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis:
“Abortion is an LGBTQ issue. Bodily autonomy and access to healthcare is a shared struggle for women and the LGBTQ community, especially when it comes to abortion and transgender healthcare. President Biden’s executive order is a necessary step to protect the health of Americans and to stem the constant state-level attacks on our bodies and our right to access life-saving medical care. Congress needs to also urgently act by restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law, as well as passing the Equality Act and codifying decisions like Griswold v. Connecticut, Lawrence v. Texas, and Obergefell v. Hodges.”

The executive order comes two days after GLAAD published a media guide for journalists covering abortion; the media guide offers guidance on inclusive terminology, statistics on abortion in the LGBTQ community, and context on the parallels between healthcare bans targeting abortion and transgender care.

Yard Act Collaborate with Elton John on New Studio Version oof "100% Endurance"

Leeds outfit Yard Act have collaborated with icon Elton John on a brand new studio version of “100% Endurance”—the euphoric closing track on their critically acclaimed 2022 debut album
The Overload. Recorded at Parlour Studios and Metropolis Studios, “100% Endurance” is produced and mixed by Ali Chant.

Explaining how the collaboration with Elton John—a fervent champion of new music of all genres via his own Rocket Hour show on Apple Music 1—came about, Yard Act frontperson James Smith said: “Within our camp we have a saying: ‘Mad shit happens when you do art’—it means what it means. You make stuff because you want to make it, and you throw stuff you’ve made into the world because you’d rather share it than not, and then you leave it alone and let it do its thing. That thing you did can take you to places you didn’t intend to go with it, but it’s out of your control really. You have no control over the mad shit. It just happens (when you do art). Elton John saw our stuff, and he started telling the press he thought we were good, and then we chatted on the phone and after a few calls I said ‘Elton, do you want to come to the studio and play piano on a tune?’ because, fuck it, it doesn’t matter if he says no. Anyway, he said ‘yes’, so it doesn’t matter that he didn’t say no. I don’t know what else to say. He’s brilliant. Switched on, hilarious and an amazing musician.”

Elton added: “From the first moment I heard Yard Act, I fell in love with James’ lyrics, and the way he’s delivered the song. Their sound is such a breath of fresh air. When James called and asked if I would come into the studio, I instantly loved the idea. I started out as a session musician in the late ‘60s, and I absolutely loved it then. It was such a thrill to be thrown in with musicians I’d never met before, it pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I became a better musician. During lock down, I had the time on my hands to really start doing that in a concerted way again, and I fell in love with the challenge and the process all over again. They’re a very special band, with a massive future ahead of them, and I’m honoured they’ve let me be a part of their journey.”

Smith rounds off: “After he’d laid down the piano and laid down the vocals, taking direction from us and trying everything we asked, Elton reiterated his love of sessioning on other people’s tracks and said something very poignant to me and Ali—'I love playing on other people’s songs, especially these guys, because I started off as a session musician. The fascinating thing is you hear things so differently from other people, and when you hear what they hear, then it all makes sense.’ That insight, that curiosity and that approach to music is the reason he’s still standing (after all this time). Elton is a diamond. It was an honour to collaborate with him. My mum is showing off to all her mates and mad shit happens when you do art.”

The original version of “100% Endurance”, the latest single lifted from The Overload—which charted at #2 in the UK and was officially the biggest selling vinyl debut of the century earlier this year—came accompanied by a video directed by longtime collaborator James Slater. The video stars multi-award-winning actor and fan of the band David Thewlis, who said of the experience: “I’ve told my agent I’m only doing Yard Act videos from now on, though next time on a tropical island or a big yacht.” “100% Endurance” also represents the first time Thewlis has filmed in his hometown Blackpool.

Ty Herndon - Till You Get There

The music video for “Till You Get There,” the first single from groundbreaking Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning country artist Ty Herndon’s forthcoming album JACOB, premiered on CMT this week and is now available for streaming and download everywhere. The video, available here, is produced and directed by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard of Neighborhoods Apart Productions.

“This song is about the power of positive thinkingWe all have the power to change our own endings, and when I look into the camera in that final moment of the song, I hope the look on my face reminds folks that the best is yet to come in their lives and for all of us!” said Herndon, who co-wrote the track with Jamie Floyd, Erik Halbig, and Jimmy Thow. Thow also serves as the track’s producer.

“Till You Get There” kicks off Herndon’s first album of all-new music since 2016’s House On Fire. Due out July 15, JACOB is the culmination of a life of hard-fought struggles and hard-won triumphs. Herndon's most personal album to date invites listeners to go with him from darkness to light – a trip he has taken in both directions. As he chronicles new parts of his life never before shared, the music plots a path to where Herndon finds himself today — a destination marked by recovery, inner strength, and peace.  With each song based on experiences from his own life — part country, part rock, part gospel – but all Ty Herndon – the country luminary has captured the pain, sorrow, and redemption that are universal to the human experience.

Released in partnership with Pivotal Records, a division of Pivotal Moments Media, JACOB, is an 11-track musical experience that discloses vulnerable truths. Herndon derived the album title from the Biblical Old Testament figure, Jacob, who dealt with severe challenges and mistakes before rising to become a leader of his tribe.

The album will be accompanied by the release of a new, ten-episode podcast hosted by Herndon in Partnership with Pivotal Moments Media and featuring conversations with high-profile artists discussing their struggles and wins along their mental fitness journeys. The series is designed to mirror the themes of JACOB and will be launched in July.

Herndon burst onto the scene and made his chart debut in 1995 with "What Mattered Most," which became his first No. 1 song and garnered a Song of the Year award (Music Row Magazine). It was also the title track to his first album, which debuted on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart and had the biggest first-week shipment in the history of Epic Records Nashville.

Between 1995 and 2002, Herndon charted 17 singles, including his three No.1s and numerous top 10 hits, such as "I Want My Goodbye Back," "Loved Too Much," "A Man Holding On," and "Hands of a Working Man." He topped the charts in 1996 with the single "Living in a Moment" and again in 1998 with "It Must Be Love."

In 2014, Herndon became the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay in an exclusive with People magazine. He received an outpouring of support that only strengthened his relationship with fans and the country music community, expanding his reach to new and diverse audiences. Shortly after, he made history when he hosted a first-of-its-kind country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance, now an annual event that provides a stage for LGBTQ and allied artists. In 2020, he created the Foundation For Love & Acceptance to further his work on behalf of LGBTQ youth.

Herndon found himself back at No. 1 in 2020 — this time on iTunes with his remake of "Orphans of God," a collaboration with Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall featured on his holiday release, Regifted.

Herndon's voice is stronger than ever, and he's using it to make a difference. In addition to his own foundation, Herndon lends his time and talent to MusiCares, which has supported Herndon through his struggles and supports those in the music industry with a safety net of services.  In 2022, he joined Pivotal Moments Media as a Brand Ambassador and as the first artist signed to the organization's new record label, Pivotal Records.
