Chase Joynt's Radical and Inventive Trans History Doc FRAMING AGNES Opens December 2

Kino Lorber is pleased to present Chase Joynt's FRAMING AGNES, which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival where it won the NEXT Innovator Award and the NEXT Audience Award.

The pseudonymous Agnes was a pioneering transgender woman who participated in an infamous gender health study conducted at UCLA in the 1960s. Her clever use of the study to gain access to gender-affirming healthcare led to her status as a fascinating and celebrated figure in trans history.

In this innovative cinematic exercise that blends fiction and nonfiction, director Chase Joynt (No Ordinary Man) uses Agnes’s story, along with others unearthed in long-shelved case files, to widen the frame through which trans history is viewed. Through a collaborative practice of reimagination, an all-star cast of trans performers, artists, and thinkers – including Angelica Ross (Pose), Jen Richards (Mrs. Fletcher), and Zackary Drucker (Transparent) – take on vividly rendered, impeccably vintage reenactments, bringing to life groundbreaking artifacts of trans history. This collective reclamation breaks down the myth of isolation among transgender history-makers, breathing new life into a lineage of collaborators and conspirators who have been forgotten for far too long.

FRAMING AGNES opens in New York on December 2 at Film Forum and in Los Angeles on December 9 at the Laemmle Noho, followed by nationwide expansion.

DREAMING ON THE PAGE: Tap into your midnight mind to supercharge your writing

Dreams have been an undervalued yet ever-present wellspring of inspiration and creativity for writers through the ages. Author Tzivia Gover, a leading voice in the field of dreamwork, has published a new book, Dreaming on the Page: Tap into your midnight mind to supercharge your writing, which offers readers a unique method for accessing our naturally generous and creative dreaming mind, whether we remember our dreams or not.

“Dreams serve the writer, and when we write them down, we give new life to the dreams that have been living inside of us—eager to guide and inspire us—all along,” Tzivia says. “In my new book, I make these connections explicit and show readers what I have intuitively known for years: that dreams and writing are perfect bedfellows, and that by honoring both, we can live more fully connected and harmonious lives.”

Tzivia outlines five reasons why writers should record their dreams:
  1. Know thyself. Journaling dreams helps you better understand yourself from the inside out. Which in turn helps you understand your characters better, brings deeper empathy to your work, and makes you an all-around more interesting writer.
  2. Write regularly—and better. Building the habit of writing dreams each morning is a great way to build writing into your everyday routine.
  3. Never scratch for ideas again. As you record dreams in your journal, you are creating an encyclopedia of plots, landscapes, characters, themes, and ideas you can return to any time. You will never again have to begin a story, essay, or poem from scratch.
  4. Build a better relationship. As you interact with the raw and complex narrative structure of the storytelling subconscious mind on a regular basis, you build a relationship with your inner narrator. Over time you develop confidence in your ability to dream into a story at any time of day.
  5. Tone your metaphoric muscles. The metaphor-making part of our mind is highly activated when we’re dreaming. Writing dreams is a great way to build our literary muscles, including those that help us create metaphors and similes.
Dreaming on the Page also offers an effective outlet for anyone suffering from stress and anxiety to transform these troubling emotions through creativity using dreams as the catalyst. “I started writing this book before the pandemic, but with each churn of the news cycle, and each crisis we faced collectively during lockdown, I believed more and more that we need effective ways to engage with our stories. Personally, and in community, dreams and writing can help us make meaning from the lives we are living. Dreaming on the Page offers a way to do just that,” says Tzivia.

Free Puppies: A true story about the heartbreak and heroism of dog rescue in America

When Hurricane Katrina left more than 250,000 pets stranded, the infrastructure of a nationwide dog rescue effort was born. Since then, millions of Southern rescue dogs have been transported to new homes thanks to the tireless efforts of a grassroots network of dog rescuers. And while the media has popularized the image of dogs climbing out of transport trucks into the arms of eager adopters, little attention has been paid to the other side of the story.

FREE PUPPIES! travels across the country's political divide to explore one of the many areas where no public animal services exist, and volunteers -- many of them women -- step in. The story follows rescuers Monda Wooten, Ann Brown, and Ruth Smith, and the network of independent “rescue ladies” who patrol vast rural counties in the Tennessee Valley caring for stray and surrendered dogs.

Their grassroots efforts to start up a spay-and-neuter program, rescue countless dogs from euthanasia and neglect, and place them in loving "forever homes" will pluck at the heartstrings of any dog person.

Releasing on VOD on major platforms and DVD in the US and Canada on December 13.

HRC: 2022 MIDTERMS FORECAST

As millions of Americans prepare to head to the polls to cast the final ballots of the 2022 midterm elections, analysts and campaign strategists at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) are seeing early signs that despite efforts by extremist candidates to suppress and demoralize millions of LGBTQ+ people, women, and people of color, the 2022 midterm elections will see LGBTQ+ voters make up more of the American electorate than in any election prior, and we’ll also see a record-breaking numbers of LGBTQ+ candidates being elected to public office — at every level of government. For the first time this year, LGBTQ+ people are on the ballot in every state across the country, and we’ll see higher levels of LGBTQ+ representation in elected office than ever before.

HRC Interim President Joni Madison issued the following statement on the eve of the 2022 midterm elections:

“This election cycle we saw extremists, conspiracy theorists, and far-right radicals — backed and enabled by billionaires and wealthy special interests — step out of the shadows and bring homophobic and transphobic propaganda and disinformation to the masses. They spun vile and outlandish narratives in an attempt to defame and slander LGBTQ+ people, shamelessly seizing on anti-trans disinformation as a voter suppression tactic in the last days of the election — making their final pitch to voters by funneling tens of millions of dollars into false ads attacking transgender kids. They worked overtime trying to engineer artificial panic, in an attempt to pit Americans against each other, because they know that the only way to weaken us is to try to divide us.

“But the gears of progress are already turning, and we know they will not be stopped. Despite efforts by extremists to keep millions of people from voting, they can’t stop us from showing up and making our voices heard at the ballot box. For the first time ever, LGBTQ+ people this year are on the ballot in every state across the country, and we’ll see an openly lesbian woman elected as governor for the first time. We’ll see a record-breaking number of transgender and gender non-conforming people elected to public office, including in states that have never had openly transgender or gender non-conforming elected leaders represent them before. We’ll see the first openly gay immigrant elected to the U.S. Congress, and we’ll see Vermont for the first time send a woman — who is also openly lesbian — to the U.S. Congress. We’re proud to support these candidates and the hundreds of others we endorsed this year, which includes more women, more people of color, and more openly LGBTQ+ candidates than ever before.

“This year, LGBTQ+ people will make up a bigger proportion of the American electorate than ever before, turning out to vote in support of pro-equality, pro-democracy, and pro-choice candidates. We’ll also turn out to remind extremists that their rhetoric can’t erase the fact that LGBTQ+ voters are becoming one of the fastest growing voting blocs in the country — expected to surge to one-in-seven voters by 2030 and nearly one-in-five voters by 2040, fundamentally transforming and reshaping the American electoral landscape. And we’re showing up with our allies, the 62 million Equality Voters across the country, for whom LGBTQ+ equality is a make-or-break election issue.

“The extremists know they can’t prevent progress from roaring forward, and they know their days are numbered. They doubled down on their hatred this year because they know that this is their last gasp. They know that those they viciously attack will be the ones who will permanently render their agenda a relic of the past. We will continue to stand and fight every day alongside our allies and partners across the country, in support of a pro-democracy, pro-equality, and pro-choice future.”

CANDIDATES: Anticipated LGBTQ+ Electoral Victories

This year, HRC endorsed more people of color and openly LGBTQ+ candidates than ever before. The LGBTQ+ community is expected to score a series of historic victories across the country, continuing to make important strides toward stronger representation and visibility at every level of government.

  • For the first time ever, LGBTQ+ candidates are on the ballot in every state across the country; Of the 1,065 LGBTQ+ hopefuls who ran primary campaigns for November’s midterms, a historic 678 made it onto the ballot — an 18 percent increase over 2020.
  • This year voters are expected to elect the country’s first openly lesbian governor, with openly lesbian women vying for the governorships in both Massachussetts and Oregon (Maura Healey and Tina Kotek, respectively).
  • This year, voters are expected to elect the country’s first openly gay immigrant to the U.S. Congress (California’s Robert Garcia).
  • This year, voters in Vermont are expected to elect the first woman and the first lesbian from the state to the U.S. Congress (Becca Balint).
  • This year, voters are expected to elect a record number of transgender and gender non-conforming people to public office — including in several states where openly transgender and gender non-conforming people have never served in public office.
  • This year, HRC endorsed more people of color and openly LGBTQ+ candidates than ever before — reflecting our commitment to fighting for a future marked by more representation and visibility in Congress and at every level of government than we’ve ever seen.
  • These victories are made possible by the ongoing work we’ve done in close collaboration with our many allies and partners in states across the country fighting on behalf of millions of Americans to ensure a future that is pro-democracy, pro-equality, and pro-choice.

VOTER IMPACT: Record-Breaking Number of LGBTQ+ Voters and “Equality Voters”

As we see a record-breaking number of LGBTQ+ candidates elected to public office, we also know there are more LGBTQ+ voters and “Equality Voters” than ever before, helping to drive pro-equality victories in states across the country.

  • This year, LGBTQ+ voters are expected to make up 11% of the American electorate – more than in any election ever before — helping to drive support for pro-equality, pro-democracy, and pro-choice candidates in local, state, and federal elections.
  • There are more eligible LGBTQ+ voters this year than in 2020 — and that trend will continue as LGBTQ+ people are becoming one of the fastest growing voting blocs in the country; By 2030, approximately one-in-seven voters will be LGBTQ+ (representing a sharp increase over the current one-in-ten) and will continue growing to one-in-five voters by 2040 — making LGBTQ+ voters one of the most influential voting constituencies in the country whose impact will permanently transform and reshape the American electoral landscape.
  • That voting power is expected to be further bolstered by the 62 million “Equality Voters” nationwide for whom LGBTQ+ equality is a make-or-break issue, who we are mobilizing in support of our legislative and issue agenda as well as our endorsed candidates.
  • LGBTQ+ voters and “Equality Voters” are slated to continue growing alongside the public’s support for LGBTQ+ people — support for LGBTQ+ rights is at an all-time high across the country, as eight-in-ten Americans support laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination, the highest it’s ever been, cutting across all partisan affiliations: Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. More than 70 percent of Americans also support marriage equality, including a majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.
  • And the LGBTQ+ community is growing: At least 20 million adults in the United States — nearly 8% of the total adult population — identify as LGBTQ+, including one-in-five Gen Z adults (more than any previous generation), according to recent results from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey.

Billy Porter commented, I’m proud to say that STRANGER THINGS is a call to action. A reminder that none of the extreme trauma that we’ve been experiencing in this moment is new, and that the human spirit is resilient. No one is going to save us from ourselves but ourselves. Stranger things have already happened to all of us. So — it’s time to get to work.

Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. Is Non-Religious Spirituality the New Religion?

Nearly one-third of U.S. adults don’t follow a religion, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Religious disaffiliation is growing faster among younger Generations.

Modern-day pressures are causing anxiety and stress levels to reach new highs. As life becomes more frenetic, many people are recognizing they have a greater need for peace in their lives.

"In the past, religion has been a refuge from life’s problems, but the modern generation is looking for logical and scientific answers to life’s toughest questions,” says Ravi Kathuria, author of Happy Soul. Hungry Mind. “Blind faith is no longer acceptable to the modern generation.”

Is there a meaningful solution for the modern generation? If religion cannot satisfy them, can non-religious spirituality step in to provide solace and a sense of calm?

Thousands of years ago, ancient sages in India discovered human beings had a wonderous spiritual ability, explains Kathuria. They realized it was a fundamental part of the nature of humans, and every human possessed spiritual ability since birth. It is one of the most significant discoveries in human history. Their discovery predated religion and is unrelated to religion.

“Religious doctrines have distracted us away from our inherent and natural spirituality,” says Kathuria. “If we connect with the spirituality within, we can find peace in spite of the modern-day pressures. It is ironic that what the modern world desperately needs was discovered thousands of years ago!”

Every human being, regardless of caste, creed, religious beliefs, region, social status, intelligence, gender and sexual identity has an inborn, inalienable and powerful ability — the spiritual ability. No exceptions. No preconditions, underscores Kathuria.

“Religion Discriminates. Spirituality does not! It cannot!” declares Kathuria.

I Want My Child to Enjoy a Beautiful Environment Says Chinese Explorer, Climate Researcher, and Mother

Polar hub researchers are estimating how quickly human-caused climate change will cause glaciers to retreat and disappear. In Net Zero Speaks with Hu Jiaojiao, Net Zero’s climate activist Wen Tian interviews Hu Jiaojiao, a female explorer and Chinese representative of the Access Water expedition and education program. Jiaojiao, who is also the Founder of Polar Hubs, tells Wen Tian that the “melting experience has far exceeded our expectation and scientists' expectation of it.” The Himalayan region, which Jiaojiao’s research covers, is the world's third polar home to 10 major river basins and some of the world's highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest. When asked how being a mother impacts her climate research, she notes, “We hope youth will learn about ecological restoration and how to deal with Climate Change. I want my child to enjoy a beautiful environment.”
