MAP: New Report Shines Light on LGBTQI+ People's Financial Lives

Last week, MAP and the Center for LGBTQ Economic Advancement & Research (CLEAR) released a new report titled, The LGBTQI+ Economic and Financial (LEAF) Survey: Understanding the Financial Lives of LGBTQI+ People in the United States.

Filling in critical gaps left by many federal and financial industry surveys that fail to include LGBTQI+ demographics, the report analyzes results from a survey of 2,505 LGBTQI+ and 503 non-LGBTQI+ adults, conducted from December 2022 to January 2023. Some key findings include:

  • LGBTQI+ people reported losing the ability to rely financially on their families after coming out. While 73% of LGBTQI+ respondents said they could rely financially on their family before telling them about their sexual orientation, only 62% could do so after coming out.  The gap was even greater for transgender respondents.

  • Four in ten parents (40%) reported having some out-of-pocket legal costs related to family formation. Additionally, 43% of LGBTQI+ parents had spent $1,000+ on out-of-pocket healthcare costs for family formation; nearly a third (32%) had spent $5,000+.

  • Most respondents who received gender-affirming care (82%) reported spending some money out-of-pocket. Nearly half (46%) of people who had received gender-affirming care spent $5,000+ out-of-pocket; one-third (33%) had spent at least $10,000 out-of-pocket.

  • LGBTQI+ people were more likely to report negative feelings about their finances than positive ones. Roughly twice as many LGBTQI+ respondents as non-LGBTQI+ respondents reported feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and depressed about their finances.

  • One in ten LGBTQI+ respondents (11%) said they had experienced discrimination in banking or financial services

Miki Ratsula Explores Gender Envy With "Jealous of My Brother"

Singer, songwriter, and producer Miki Ratsula returns with their first new music of the year. “Jealous of My Brother” sees the trans, non-binary artist continue to use their voice and platform to make music more inclusive as they candidly share their innermost thoughts and feelings, this time exploring gender envy towards their cisgender brother. But peeling back the layers reveal deeper pain and truths, and even love and gratitude. Listen HERE.

Miki explains, “Below the surface, ‘Jealous of My Brother’ explores a deeper topic of being envious that my brother doesn’t have to deal with the transphobic microaggressions that I inevitably have to experience from my family (whether their intentions are good or not). The reality is, I will always be treated differently from them because I am trans, and he is not. And then even deeper, this is also a thank you letter to my brother. I am nothing but grateful for him. He is the best ally I could ask for. I wish my family could be as great of an ally as he is.”

Miki Ratsula has been releasing music independently since they were 16, having racked up over 50 million streams in the process. The Southern California-based, Finnish American artist has developed a devoted audience by openly and honestly welcoming people into their world, from coming out to getting top surgery to struggles with mental health. Last year, Miki released their debut full-length album, i owe it to myself, an acoustic pop dream guided by Miki’s lush, lofi-inspired production that captures the full emotional seesaw that rocks between youth and adulthood. Their deeply intimate record received praise and playlisting by the likes of Billboard Pride, them., Under the Radar, PopMatters, The Advocate and more. They followed the album with their made for them EP, featuring gender-neutral covers of songs by Dodie, Phoebe Bridgers, Harry Styles, Angus & Julia Stone and One Direction, which Billboard noted: “they took a fan-beloved single and gave it a modernized, indie-pop twist that adds a touch of sentimentality, making 1D’s romantic jam even more tender.”

David Hockney - A Year in Normandie in dialogue with works from the Würth Collection

The internationally renowned British master of contemporary landscape painting is presenting his 90-meter-long iPad frieze A Year in Normandie for the first time in a German museum. Via a composite of individual iPad paintings, the artist reviews his immediate surroundings over the course of a year, adopting the format of the famous Bayeux Tapestry to recount the Battle of Hastings in 1066, which inspired Hockney to create this continuum. He studied his environment painstakingly and in great detail, working outdoors with the aid of his iPad, using it to translate what he saw into an impressive, luminous record of the passing seasons.

A unique feature of this first-time showing of an iPad painting in these dimensions is the dialogue it encourages with Hockney works from the Würth Collection. Motifs from his time in Yorkshire, northern England, are juxtaposed with landscapes in northern France.

The exhibition concept also alludes to the long-standing contacts between Hockney, master of landscape painting, and the passionate collector, Reinhold Würth.

IGLTA & IGLTA Foundation Celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility

Today, The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association and IGLTA Foundation celebrate transgender and gender-expansive people, and their contributions to society that make our world better and brighter. Today is also a day to recognize and raise awareness of the discrimination they continue to face worldwide.

Last year, The IGLTA Foundation formed the Transgender Advisory Group to better support the ‘T’ in LGBTQ+. This volunteer group works to help develop training and resources to elevate the lives of transgender people. Read more here about the members of the group and the incredible work they do year-round.

“We’re seeing anti-LGBTQ+ laws on the rise all around the world, with many of them especially harmful to our gender-diverse community. It’s so important for our global network to stand up and speak out about these attacks against members of our community,” said IGLTA CEO/President John Tanzella. “That’s exactly why our Foundation has formed a global advisory group to improve resources for gender-diverse travelers and the tourism industry.”

GLAAD + Ty Herndon Partner To Bring Concert For Love & Acceptance Back to the Stage Live on June 7 in Nashville

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, and groundbreaking country music artist Ty Herndon announce the return of the Concert For Love & Acceptance, set to take place Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville on the eve of CMA Fest. Maddie & Tae, Terri Clark, Pam Tillis, Desmond Child, Wendy Moten, Billy Gilman, Shelly Fairchild, and Justin Fabus are set to perform, with additional appearances and performances to be announced in the coming weeks. The event will benefit GLAAD and Ty Herndon’s Foundation For Love & Acceptance.

“With LGBTQ youth and families under attack here in Tennessee and across the country, it’s more important than ever that Nashville come together to send a strong message to them that they are loved just the way they are. Treating each other with kindness, dignity, respect, and equality under the law should never be a political issue. We are all human, and we all deserve to be loved and accepted,” said Herndon.

Herndon and GLAAD joined together for the first time in 2015 to create the Concert For Love & Acceptance to promote LGBTQ visibility and acceptance among the country music community and artists, industry leaders, and fans. Held as an annual live event until 2019, the Concert was staged as a virtual event in response to the COVID pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The event has featured performances and appearances by LGBTQ artists and allies, including Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Brothers Osborne, Jake Owen, Kristin Chenoweth, Chely Wright, Tanya Tucker, Brett Young, Michael Ray, Mickey Guyton, Chris Daughtry, Lily Rose, and many more.
“Although it is currently an extremely turbulent time for LGBTQ people as we are forced to navigate many barriers being brought forth by a wave of anti-LGBTQ bills popping up all over the country, there is still a palpable momentum happening in Nashville and within country music to make it a more welcoming place for queer people,” said GLAAD Vice President of Communications and Talent, Anthony Allen Ramos. The Concert for Love & Acceptance's core message of treating others with respect is more urgent than ever.”

The event will take place at Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, June 7 at 7:30 pm. Click here for ticket information.

JAKK FYNN Releases New Music Video "Take My Heart"

Today, pop artist Jakk Fynn (he/him), a Latinx transmasculine pop artist committed to redefining masculinity, releases his latest single and music video, “Take My Heart. The song is the first single off of his upcoming EP Can’t Look Back, out later this spring.

About the inspiration behind his newest single, Jakk says: “While “Take My Heart” may sound like a typical breakup song, I actually wrote it about my complex relationship with my family. As a trans and neurodivergent person, being raised by my immigrant grandparents resulted in a lot of friction because my identity didn’t fit their script. While I was coming of age, this left me with a lot of deep pain and heartbreak as I struggled to define my identity and find peace in pursuit of living as my most authentic self.”

In the video for “Take My Heart, directed by Candice Dalson and filmed by Jacob Alvarado, Jakk subverts gender norms and blurs all lines between their masculine and feminine identity. Clad in black and white fashions, Jakk is accompanied by a masked figure that likely represents the identity they shed and his family mourns.

Of the inspiration behind the video, Jakk says: “Growing up AFAB felt like I was sentenced to misery. The expectations of family and society had zero appeal; it left me little room to envision a life beyond it. During my adolescence I found relief in daydreaming, cross-dressing, and music. In this video I’m ironically engaging similarly but from a space of liberation. I could go on about how the video symbolizes the binary, power struggles, and its breakdown, but I think my biggest takeaway is the actual experience. It feels akin to a phoenix.”

Of the power behind his approach to gender, Jakk adds: “I was once so at odds with my skin that a dress felt like violence. Yet now, “feminine” modes of expression won’t erode my peace or destabilize my sense of self. So sure, gender can be a very harmful construct, but don’t be afraid of the power you hold to reconstruct it. The journey is never-ending, but a better global construct can’t emerge until we’re all constantly iterating on ourselves and transcending the norms that hurt us.”

As the descendent of Mexican immigrants, Jakk is committed to using pop music’s power to uplift audiences and challenge toxic social narratives, especially for audiences who don’t often see themselves fairly and accurately represented in mainstream culture.

EEOC Sues Pizzeria for Harassing and Driving Out Transgender Employee

T C Wheelers, Inc., which operates T.C. Wheelers Bar & Pizzeria in Tonawanda, New York, violated federal law when management and employees harassed an employee because of his gender identity, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.

The EEOC alleges that beginning in January 2021, one of T.C. Wheelers’ owners repeatedly harassed Quinn J. Gambino, a transgender male, including telling Gambino that he “wasn’t a real man,” asking invasive questions about his transition, and asking, “Does she have female parts?” According to the EEOC’s complaint, T.C. Wheelers’ owners also intentionally misgendered Gambino by using female pronouns (such as “she” or “her”) and stood by as employees and customers did the same.

The federal agency further alleges that management and employees at T.C. Wheelers made numerous other anti-transgender comments, including asking questions about Gambino’s genitalia, telling him he wasn’t a “real guy,” and equating being transgender to pedophilia.

Gambino, who worked as a cook at T.C. Wheelers, complained repeatedly to management, the EEOC said. TC Wheelers failed to protect Gambino by not addressing the almost daily harassment from all levels of staff, including owners, managers, and line employees. Eventually, Gambino had no choice but to resign to escape the harassment, the EEOC charged.

Such alleged conduct violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of sex. Harassment based upon gender identity is a form of sex discrimination prohibited by the statute.

“This new lawsuit, filed one day before Transgender Day of Visibility, reflects the EEOC’s longstanding commitment to protecting transgender persons from employment discrimination, including the type of egregious harassment alleged in this case,” said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows. “In the current climate, where transgender individuals face increasing attacks on their rights and basic humanity, the EEOC will vigorously enforce the Supreme Court’s holding in Bostock that discrimination against transgender workers violates the law.”

The EEOC filed suit (EEOC v. T.C. Wheelers, Inc. d/b/a T.C. Wheelers Bar & Pizzeria, Civil Action No. 1:23-cv-00286) in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, Buffalo Division, after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through the agency’s conciliation process. The EEOC seeks back pay, compensatory damages, and punitive damages for the affected employee, and injunctive relief to remedy and prevent workplace future gender-based harassment.

“Everyone, regardless of their gender identity, deserves to work in an environment free from harassment,” said Jeffrey Burstein, regional attorney for the EEOC’s New York District Office. “This lawsuit makes clear that the EEOC will not tolerate workplace harassment of transgender individuals.”

EEOC New York Acting District Director Timothy Riera added, “Employers must understand that Title VII protects employees from discrimination based upon gender identity and that they have a responsibility to prevent such discrimination from occurring. Employers should handle complaints of harassment seriously and take measures to prevent such abuse. If they fail to do so, the EEOC stands at the ready to enforce federal law.”

For more information on sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination, please visit https://www.eeoc.gov/sexual-orientation-and-gender-identity-sogi-discrimination. For more information on harassment, please visit https://www.eeoc.gov/harassment .

The EEOC’s New York District Office is responsible for processing discrimination charges, administrative enforcement, and the conduct of agency litigation in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, northern New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The agency’s Buffalo Local Office conducted the investigation resulting in this lawsuit. Trial Attorney James Bobseine and Supervisory Trial Attorney Nora Curtin will litigate the case.

The EEOC advances opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. More information is available at www.eeoc.gov

ABBA Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of "Ring Ring" in Multiple Formats

The year 2023 sees the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s debut album, Ring Ring. It is an important album in the amazing history of the group, as it shows us their birth: the fascinating start of their journey, finding out who they are and where their strengths lie.

Reaching record shops in Sweden on March 26, 1973, Ring Ring offered a wealth of great pop tunes. There was, for instance, "People Need Love," the very first ABBA single, and "He Is Your Brother," a popular number on ABBA’s 1977 tour of Europe and Australia. Crucially, on the title track the ABBA sound was born as the group discovered how attractive the sound of multi-layered vocals was and how exciting a song could be if you made use of all the possibilities of the recording studio.

The public responded well to "Ring Ring" – the song and the album. Famously, for two consecutive weeks in April 1973, the Swedish "Ring Ring" single was at Number One, the English-language version at Number Two, and the Ring Ring album at Number Three on the combined singles-and-albums chart used in Sweden at the time. Record-buyers had fallen head over heels in love with this brand new group. And ABBA’s sense of joy in trying different song styles and thrilling studio trickery can still be felt today, half a century later.

The Ring Ring album was originally credited to Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Frida – the name ABBA didn’t quite exist yet. The group itself almost didn’t exist, as the two ladies were still pursuing solo careers and the two men were busy with many different projects when the album was recorded. But its huge success sealed the deal: from now on they would be ABBA.
