Experience the Power of The Inheritance: Award-Winning Play Explores Gay Life in 21st-Century New York

Looking for a powerful theatrical experience that explores the complexities of being gay in 21st-century New York? Look no further than The Inheritance, a gripping two-part epic that transposes EM Forster's novel Howard's End to the modern day.

Decades after the AIDS epidemic, three generations of gay men are left grappling with the tragedy of their past and what it means for their future. The play tackles themes of healing, class divide, and the meaning of "home" in a deeply moving and thought-provoking way.

It's no surprise, then, that The Inheritance has been showered with accolades since its premiere. The play has won the Tony Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award, Laurence Olivier Award, Critics' Circle Theatre Award, and Drama Desk Award for Best Play, and in 2020, Matthew Lopez became the first Latino to win the Tony Award in this category for his work on the play.

One reviewer for The Daily Telegraph even called The Inheritance "perhaps the most important American play of this century." Don't miss your chance to experience this groundbreaking work for yourself – it's a must-see for anyone interested in the complexities of the LGBTQ experience in America today.

The Gay and Lesbian Review Awards Writers and Artists Grants to Three LGBTQ Students

The Gay & Lesbian Review / Worldwide (The G&LR), with the generous support of the Leonard-Litz Foundation, announced today the recipients of its first-ever Writers and Artists Grant. The G&LR Grant of $15,000, divided among three candidates, was created to cultivate a new and diverse pool of writers for The G&LR, to bring their perspectives, ideas, and voices to the magazine, and to encourage emerging and unpublished LGBTQ+ writers, thinkers, scholars, and artists.

Graduate students Lucas Belury, PhD student in Geography at the University of Arizona; Gervais Marsh, PhD candidate in Performance Studies at Northwestern University; and Cait N. Parker, PhD candidate in American Studies with a concentration in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at Purdue University, were notified that they each received a grant to complete or advance LGBT-related writing and other creative projects.

Lucas Belury’s project, titled “Queer Survival in 20th Century South Texas,” will chronicle the queer history of San Antonio, TX in the 1970s and early 1980s, and reveal how LGBTQ+ life was shaped by a politics of respectability that reconstituted explicitly queer spaces, palatable to heteronormative society.

Gervais Marsh’s project, titled “Intimate Notes: Patric McCoy's Archive of Black Gay Life in Chicago,” will focus on artist Patric McCoy’s photographic archive as a meditation on histories of Black queer life and intimacy in Chicago from the 1970s to 1980s, while also grappling with the impact of HIV/AIDS on Black communities and artistic expression.

Cait N. Parker’s project, titled “Don’t Let Them Bury Us: Lesbian Revolutionaries in the Prison Abolition Movement,” will analyze the intersections between lesbian activists and the prison abolition movement in the 1980s–2000s.

“We believe that the most marginalized people in society, including people of color, people from working-class backgrounds, women, and LGBT people, should be central to our mission,” said G&LR Publisher Stephen Hemrick. “We encouraged people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities to apply, and we were overwhelmed by the breadth and talent of the people who did so.”

The G&LR is a bimonthly magazine of history, culture, and politics targeting an educated readership of LGBT people, and their allies that publishes essays in a wide range of disciplines as well as reviews of books, movies, and plays. The G&LR’s mission is to promote equal rights and equality for all sexual and gender minorities, advance the intellectual life of LGBT people, and educate a broader public on LGBT topics.

LGBTQ Horror Comedy SUMMONING SYLVIA Stirs Laughs and Fright on VOD and Digital HD This Friday

The Horror Collective is excited to announce the
North American theatrical and TVOD release of their LGBTQ horror comedy Summoning Sylvia. Written and directed by Wesley Taylor (Smash, The Spongebob Musical, soon to recur on Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building") and Alex Wyse (Marvel’s Iron Fist, soon to join Broadway's Good Night, Oscar), the hair-raising romp tells the story of a gay bachelor party that takes a spooky turn when sinister spirits are suddenly summoned.

Summoning Sylvia tells the tale of Larry, who has been kidnapped by his three best friends for a bachelor weekend getaway at a haunted house. As they sashay through the dusty corridors, the comrades recount the house’s legend from a hundred years ago: a murderous woman named Sylvia slaughtered her son and buried him beneath the house's floorboards. But then Larry remembers that he was supposed to spend the weekend bonding with Harrison, his mysterious future brother-in-law. Horrified at his oversight, Larry invites the army-uniformed, hetero Harrison to join his gaggle’s gaycation, neglecting to run it by his friends. Later, as they hold a high-spirited séance to summon the sinister Sylvia, the group ends up welcoming more houseguests than they bargained for.

Summoning Sylvia is currently screening in major markets nationwide and will debut on Cable VOD and Digital HD, including iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Comcast and Verizon, April 7, 2023.

Get Ready for a Witty and Hilarious Ride with Dekkoo's Original Gay Series, Marriage of Inconvenience - Streaming Tomorrow!

Don't miss the latest addition to Dekkoo.com's subscription streaming service: the new original series, Marriage of Inconvenience, set to launch on April 6th. This romantic comedy follows two strangers who enter a witness protection program and must pretend to be happily married in order to hide their identities from the dangerous people who want them dead.

Starring Jason T. Gaffney as Owen and David Allen Singletary as Franklin, the show has been called a 21st-century gay version of The Odd Couple. The two men couldn't be more different, and the only thing they have in common is that they're both gay. But as they live together as Mr. and Mr. Fulton, they find that they share something else: they can't stand each other.

Jason T. Gaffney not only stars in the series but also directed four of the episodes and co-wrote the show with his father, Ed Gaffney. He likens Marriage of Inconvenience to the Netflix series, Grace and Frankie, saying that the show has hilarious moments, but also touching, sad, and hopeful moments.

David Allen Singletary, who plays Franklin, agrees that the show has a little bit of everything. He describes it as "funny, touching, sad and hopeful" and says that at its core, it is a story of love and how it can come from unexpected places.

It's not just the show's plot that makes it worth watching. Jason T. Gaffney was careful to cast as many out LGBTQ+ actors as possible for the roles in Marriage of Inconvenience. Nearly all of the actors playing gay men are out gay men, including Jason Carceras as Lenny and Jewell Wilson Bridges as Peter. Even veteran comedic actor Alec Mapa makes a cameo appearance in the series.

As an actor of color, David Allen Singletary feels fortunate to have been cast as Franklin. He says that he is often asked to play roles that are based on stereotypes, such as a convict or gang member, so it's rewarding to play a role that reflects his own life.
