Pride Month Event: Defying the Nazi Campaign to Control Sexuality - A Virtual Commemoration by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

A 1926 scene from Berlin’s Eldorado, a nightclub popular with LGBTQ+ people that was shut down by the Nazis in 1933bpk-Bildagentur

In celebration of Pride Month, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is organizing a Facebook Live virtual event titled "Pride Month: Defying the Nazi Campaign to Control Sexuality." This event aims to shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals during the 1930s and '40s under the Nazi regime in Germany.

Taking place on Thursday, June 1, at 9:30 a.m. ET, the event will delve into the history of Berlin during that time, when it was considered the most progressive city in the world for its views on sexuality and gender. Berlin was home to the renowned Institute for Sexual Science, a leading center for research and education on these topics.

However, the Nazi regime imposed strict measures, closing down LGBTQ+ meeting places, organizations, and publications. One well-known example was the El Dorado nightclub, a popular gathering spot for LGBTQ+ individuals, which was transformed into a headquarters for the Nazi Stormtroopers.

The virtual event will explore these historical events and feature discussions led by Dr. Edna Friedberg, a historian from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Dr. Mark Alexander, another historian from the same institution.

The event aims to commemorate Pride Month and highlight the resilience and rebellion of LGBTQ+ individuals during Nazi rule. It serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for LGBTQ+ rights and celebrating the diverse and inclusive society we strive to create.

To participate in the Facebook Live virtual event and learn more about this significant chapter in LGBTQ+ history, interested individuals can visit the Museum's online calendar at https://www.ushmm.org/online-calendar/event/vefblvpridemth0601. The event will be recorded and made available for viewing immediately.

The Boy with the Faster Brain Named 2023 National Parenting Product Award Winner

The Boy with the Faster Brain
(March 2023/Softcover and ebook) Peter Shankman’s new book that helps parents and children navigate the scary and confusing world of ADHD, has been named winner of the National Parenting Products Award for 2023.  Integrity and honesty are at the core of NAPPA Awards' mission. For over 33 years, the National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) has been ensuring that parents purchase the highest quality products that help them connect and enjoy time with their families.

Peter Shankman realized a long time ago that his ADHD was responsible for most, if not all his success. After starting and selling three companies and writing five best-selling books (including Faster Than Normal, which in five years has become the bible of ADHD and productivity), Peter decided it was time to write a book that focused on children—one that would teach them that ADHD, and all forms of neurodiversity, can be gifts, and not a curse—as long as they understand how to use them.

That’s what The Boy with the Faster Brain is about. Meet Peter, his mom and dad, and Dr. Lisa, who together help Peter navigate the confusing and scary world of ADHD.  Working together, Peter comes to understand that he has a faster brain than other kids and why having that can be the best thing a child could ask for.  The story helps parents explain to children with any type of neurodiversity issues that there is nothing wrong with them in a way they can understand. The story explains that Peter’s faster brain is like a race car.  With the help of his parents and Dr. Lisa, Peter learns how to effectively “drive” his brain.  The important message in the book is that children with ADHD and other forms of neurodiversity are not broken, they are brilliant and learning how to harness their faster brains opens up a world of possibilities.

America’s Educators Stand With GLSEN Amid Attacks, Lies from Right-Wing Extremists

This week, after Target announced it was pulling some Pride merchandise from stores in response to extremist threats, GLSEN and other leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations released a statement calling on the business community to rise up against anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

Since then, right-wing media outlets have spread harmful and vicious lies about GLSEN — and these intentional and heinous attacks have spurred an onslaught of hateful messages and threats to their mission and the physical safety of their staff.

Since GLSEN was founded by a group of teachers in 1990, they have been committed to creating affirming learning environments for LGBTQ+ youth, an imperative that the educators of the National Education Association (NEA) shares with them and the many advocates speaking out against these horrid attacks on LGBTQ+ youth and their advocates.

NEA President Becky Pringle issued the following statement in response to the attacks.

“GLSEN and the NEA are united in our commitment to the wellbeing and success of our LGBTQ+ students. Our common work on behalf of students is grounded in racial justice, disability justice, and gender justice and the fundamental belief that all students deserve dignity and respect.

“As we enter Pride month, we must stand ever more resolute in that commitment while extremists attack and deny the right to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives and attempt to curtail all student’s freedom to learn. It’s more important than ever for actionable allyship that centers LGBTQ+ visibility and representation, as well as unwavering commitment to LGBTQ+ equality by institutional allies like employers and businesses.

“The 3 million educators and members of the NEA call on our allies to stand strong with the GLSEN and the LGBTQ+ community. Caving to extremist ideologies is an abdication of the professional obligation to stand by our fundamental moral responsibilities and our values of diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Director Pasquale Marrazzo's Acclaimed 'THE NEIGHBOR' Sets Hearts Ablaze with Its Unforgettable Love Story

Director Pasquale Marrazzo’s acclaimed THE NEIGHBOR has been scheduled for a theatrical release June 2 and digital and DVD release June 6 from Dark Star Pictures and Uncork’d Entertainment.

With strong reviews out of OUTshine Miami FF, Out At the Movies and more, the film features superlative performances from Michelle Costabile and Jacopo Costantini and boasts a score by prizewinning Italian composer Teho Teardo (“House of Gucci,” “Il Divo”).

An intense love story between two young men forms from a harrowing incident they are involved in. From that moment on nothing will be like it used to be and the love between the two men sadly brings to light Luca’s parents’ hate and intolerance towards their relationship.

PEOPLE Exclusive: Elliot Page Releases First Chapter of 'Pageboy' Memoir: 'Grateful to Be Here - and Alive'

Elliot Page's much-anticipated memoir, Pageboy, will be released on June 6. It’s a deeply personal story which promises to discuss Page's relationship with his body, his experiences as one of the most famous trans people in the world, and will cover mental health, assault, love, relationships, sex, and the cesspool that Hollywood can be.

Page, 36, admits to being a little nervous. “Slightly overwhelmed!” he says with a laugh. “But grateful.”

“I didn't think I could write a book,” Page tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Books, particularly memoirs, have really shifted my life, offered me inspiration, comfort, been humbling, all of those things. And I think this period of not just hate, of course, but misinformation or just blatant lies about LGTBQ+ lives, about our healthcare, it felt like the right time. Trans and queer stories are so often picked apart, or worse, universalized. So the first chapter of Pageboy” — excerpted below — “I just sat down, and it came out and I just didn't stop. I just kept writing.”

Page knows his own personal experience is not that of most in his community. “My experience as a trans person and this life I have, and the privilege I have does not represent the reality of most trans lives.” Nevertheless, representation and visibility are important, he says. “I think it's crucial, I think we need to feel represented and see ourselves, you know, that's not something I had like as a kid. The reality is, trans people disproportionately are unemployed, disproportionately experience homelessness. Trans women of color are being murdered. People are losing their healthcare or couldn't access it.”

EPA awards $800K to Silverton, Colorado, for property cleanup and revitalization

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced the Town of Silverton will receive an $800,000 Brownfields Multipurpose Grant funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. EPA’s award to Silverton is among six Brownfields grants totaling nearly $4.78 million announced today for cleanup and revitalization projects in communities across Colorado.

The Town of Silverton will use the EPA funds to complete environmental cleanup actions and site assessments, develop a brownfields inventory and conduct related community engagement activities at properties in town and along recreational corridors. Addressing contamination at these sites will create opportunities for new affordable housing, water quality improvements and recreational amenities.

“Silverton has developed a comprehensive plan to assess, clean up and revitalize key properties in town and in key recreational areas surrounding the community,” said EPA Regional Administrator KC Becker. “EPA is proud to support these efforts to improve health and develop new amenities for the community with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is helping clean up and revitalize communities across Colorado," said U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. “With this funding, Buena Vista, Pueblo, Telluride, Silverton, San Luis and Trinidad can make sure these sites are safe for the families living near them and restore them in ways that meet the communities’ needs.”

The EPA funds are part of President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to expedite the assessment and cleanup of brownfield sites in while advancing environmental justice through the Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (MARC) Grant programs. Thanks to the historic boost from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this funding is the largest ever awarded in the history of the EPA’s Brownfields MARC Grant programs.

"Silverton is grateful for the continued support from our federal partners,” said Gloria Kaasch-Buerger, Town Administrator, Town of Silverton. “This grant is a great step forward in our ability to manage our community's natural assets while we grow and thrive."

The target area for the EPA grant funds includes the Town Core, the Animas River Corridor and the Cement Creek Corridor, all within Silverton. Priority sites include the Zanoni site on Keystone Street, the Lackawanna Mill site on 468 County Road 20 and the Cement Creek site on County Road 110.

The Town of Silverton will use the funds to focus on former mining sites and ancillary operations, like smelters, where remnant features, abandoned facilities and tailings piles remain today. Many of these operations were concentrated along the waterbody corridors that frame the town, resulting in adverse impacts to water quality. Additionally, mine wastes with elevated metal concentrations were often used as fill and grading materials at these sites, which limit their potential for redevelopment. Contaminants of concern include arsenic, cadmium, copper, silver, zinc and lead.

The Town will reuse many of these brownfields sites including the Zanoni site in the Town Core area, an ideal location for much-needed new affordable housing. Another priority is the 27-acre Lackawanna Mill site in the Animas River Corridor, which includes an abandoned historic mill, remnant mining buildings, waste piles and equipment that impact the river and nearby recreation. In addition, the Cement Creek site is a roughly five-acre property comprised of exposed mine tailings with steep sided slopes leading to the creek. The site is a priority for assessment and cleanup to address hazards. Potential reuse opportunities include open space, pedestrian infrastructure and art and signage that would enhance this gateway area to town.
