Utah clerks given ability to opt out of same-sex marriages

Utah government officials will be allowed to refuse to marry same-sex couples under legislation signed by Gov. Gary Herbert (pictured) last week.

County clerks' offices will be required to designate someone else to perform marriages if a clerk refuses to do so.

Mo. Legislature considers slate of anti-LGBT bills

Lawmakers in Missouri are considering eight bills that could allow anti-LGBT discrimination, including one that would grant university groups exemptions from nondiscrimination policies and another that would require all public restrooms to be gender-divided

"These bills are all attacks that try to move us backwards," said Kyle Piccola of PROMO (pictured), a state LGBT advocacy organization.

Mich. lawmakers vote to let adoption agencies refuse gay parents

Michigan's Republican-led House approved a bill last week that would allow adoption agencies to refuse gay couples on the basis of religious beliefs. The bill would prevent state or local government from punishing adoption agencies exercising objections.

"It's not just [a] license to discriminate. It's actually writing a check for that discrimination," said state Rep. Jeff Irwin, a Democrat.

Idaho measure calls for impeachments of judges who support marriage equality

The Idaho House last week passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of federal judges who rule in favor of same-sex marriage. The bill, which follows a number of court rulings legalizing marriage equality in Idaho and elsewhere, now heads to the Senate.

Democratic state Rep. John McCrostie, who is the only openly LGBT lawmaker in Idaho, indicated that the measure would have little effect other than to provide campaign fodder for certain lawmakers.

Ind. "religious freedom" bill clears House despite opposition from businesses

The Indiana House on Monday passed a "religious freedom" bill, sending it to the state Senate for a concurring vote, which could come this week. Republican Gov. Mike Pence (pictured) has indicated he supports the legislation.

LGBT advocates and business leaders, including the CEO of Salesforce, have expressed fear that the bill's broad wording will allow anti-LGBT discrimination.

HRC urges Senators to vote against Inhofe amendment

Today, the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, condemned an amendment introduced in the Senate as a last ditch effort to undermine marriage equality. Introduced by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), the anti-LGBT amendment would endorse the idea that businesses and organizations should be allowed to use taxpayer funds to discriminate against married same-sex couples.

“With nearly 60 percent of Americans supporting marriage equality, the Senate should reject Sen. Inhofe’s effort to turn back the clock on equality,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “Senator Inhofe’s long record of opposition to LGBT rights is already notorious, but the question this week is whether the U.S. Senate rejects his extreme, anti-equality agenda. Sen. Inhofe isn’t even in touch with his own constituents. The Oklahoma legislature rejected more than a dozen bills aimed at harming LGBT people. Fair-minded Senators from both parties should reject this amendment.”

Using misleading language, the amendment attempts to turn the table on non-discrimination provisions by specifically requiring that “...federal agencies do not discriminate against an individual, business, or organization with sincerely held religious beliefs against abortion or that marriage is the union between one man and one woman… .” The First Amendment already protects religious and political speech. This amendment is an attempt to garner support for the faulty idea that businesses and organizations should be able to discriminate against married same-sex couples without jeopardizing their access to government contracts and other federal funds.

The Gay Vegans: Who represents you on city council?

By Dan Hanley

I write a lot about getting active politically and getting to know those who represent us throughout political levels.

Watching so many people protest in cities around the country for or against issues that are local, I decided to write about being active with one's city council.

Who is the city council member that represents you?

In Lakewood, Colorado, where we live, we have two folks on city council who represent our part of the city. Some cities have one for their area and then some who can be elected city-wide.

The city council has more power than you might think. A lot of politics is local.

I have met with our city council members about issues as diverse as chain laws for dogs kept outside, marijuana stores in town and seeing what can be done to make sure our police officers are trained in a way that they never feel they need to shoot and kill a dog.

Some cities have hundreds of employees. Do they honor same-sex couples? Smaller cities may not even have considered how animals labeled as "pets" are treated. A locally-supported Meatless Monday?

Recently a city council of another suburb of Denver, Castle Rock, were inundated with citizens who wanted them to hold off on slaughtering a colony of prairie dogs so a mall could be built. Those pleading with the council were only asking for time to move the colony. The way some council members treated those speaking for the prairie dogs made me sick.

Find out who represents you on city council. Let them know what issues are important to you. You never know what amazing difference that can make or what voiceless being you could support.

Nice To See StevieB: Glassy

By StevieB

After buying the shiny new Jeep in June, I already have to replace the windshield. Let this be a lesson; when you get a chip in your car's windshield, have it filled/repaired. It's a cheaper choice than buying new glass.

Jeeps are strange contraptions. Their windscreens have the Jeep grill logo embossed into the top center, as a sun blocker. There's also a tiny Jeep in the corner, just in case you forgot you owned a Jeep. This honor drives the price for a new windscreen up by three-hundred dollars. Yeah. That's right, proprietary parts. Thanks Jeep.

They do make other, "non-branded" windshields. These are exactly the same, without the cool factor. So, for three hundred less dollars, I'm getting the generic version. But, if you know me; you know I'm a huge label whore. So... Here's the deal. I found after-market stickers that mimic the Jeep logos. I can apply the knock-off stickers and Viola! Jeep branding! I'll always feel like I am wearing cheap Pro Wing tennis shoes from K-Mart, but they'll look like Pumas.
