Nice To See StevieB: My Part

By StevieB

One of my earlier memories was getting my haircut. It was in a strip mall in our small hometown. My Father took my older brother and me to get a buzzcut. I remember the stacks of coloring books and having my very first comic book adventure. Gazing at nineteen seventies Superman taking flight upon the page. This was when my love for comic books was born. I remember the feel of sitting in the huge barber chair; a booster seat to bring me up to the barber’s level. The barber seemed younger than my Dad, but still ancient. In my tiny brain. The image of my Dad wondering out the door, stating he’d be back to pick is up. I had a scared feeling, wanting to jump from the chair as the buzzing steel clippers came close to my ear. Being comforted by the barber that he wouldn’t hurt me. Softly whispering in my ear that I was safe. His hand moving under the cape to find its way into my jeans. Feeling warm and special because the barber clipping away on my brother in the next chair was not being even acknowledged. I exchanged warm smiles with the barber-man as he cut my hair. One handed.

This is when it happened, I believe. He cut a side part into my hair. On the left side of my head. I have worn a part on the left side ever since that day. Mostly, this is because I have a massive amount of callicks (or cowlicks) on the back of my head. My hair resembles the back end of a guinea pig most days. Always using a massive amount to product to keep my swirling and unruly hair in its place.

I recently had to find a new barber, as Nick the Super Barber moved to new town to start a Bed and Breakfast. I gave in and went to the hipster barbershop that my roommate uses. It is SUPER hipstery. I have a happy connection with getting my hair cut. Obviously, from my past of Superman and having my dick awakened for the first time. I went in for my first appointment half-hoping there would be comic books. There was not. I met the barber and began to explain my swirl and callicks on the back of my head. He stopped. “It’s because you have your hair parted on the wrong side.” He explained. “Your swirl and callick goes from right to left, opposite of how you’re laying your hair.” He combed my hair over from right to left and all my stand uppity hair laid flat….. Holy hell. That guy…. When I was just a kid… gave me thirty years of bad hair days??? Guess you are never too old to move your part from the left. I’m all right now.

Over 50? Pay Attention to Your Prostate!

The National Institutes of Health reports that approximately 50 percent of men aged 51Ð60 and more than 90 percent of men older than 80 will develop BPH.

Dr. Dudley Danoff has taught on the clinical faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine for more than twenty-five years and is the founder and president of the Cedars-Sinai Tower Urology Medical Group in Los Angeles. He says, "Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or the benign enlargement of the prostate, is nearly inevitable in aging males.

Think of the male bladder as a balloon placed neck-side down in the pelvis, and visualize the prostate as a doughnut around the neck of the balloon. As a man ages, the doughnut gets larger and the hole in the doughnut gets smaller, making it more difficult to empty the balloon through urination."

Dr. Danoff says that the most reliable method of identifying which patients need treatment for BPH is a questionnaire developed by the American Urological Association (AUA) that examines the condition's most prominent symptoms, which include incomplete bladder emptying; frequency, intermittency, and urgency of urination; weakness of the urine stream; straining during urination; and nighttime urination. These symptoms are rated on a scale of 0 to 5. The higher the total score, the more likely it is that a patient will need treatment for BPH.

If you get a BPH diagnosis, here are Dr. Danoff's top ten suggestions about what to do next:

1.      Have a complete urologic and prostate examination, which should include a digital rectal exam and a blood screening exam that uses a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to test for the presence of possible prostate cancer.

2.      Get a noninvasive ultrasound to measure the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination. An ultrasound can also detect structural abnormalities in the prostate and determine the need for a biopsy.

3.      Consider watchful waiting if symptoms are mild or moderate. Progression of symptoms is not inevitable, and some menÕs symptoms spontaneously improve or resolve.

4.      Ask about medical treatments for BPH. A recently developed class of drugs called alpha blockers has been widely and safely used for a number of years to relieve the symptoms of BPH. In general, they relax the neck of the bladder (widening the hole in the doughnut) to allow more complete emptying.

5.      Find out about shrinking the prostate. Another class of drugs called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors affects the cells of the prostate, reducing the size of the gland and improving symptoms. This treatment usually takes six months and may cause side effects like erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, enlarged breast tissue, and ejaculation problems.

6.      Consider combination therapy. The combination of tamsulosin (an alpha blocker) and finasteride (a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor) has been shown to decrease AUA symptom scores and increase urinary flow rates significantly greater than the use of either drug alone. Over the last several years, combination therapy has vastly decreased the need for surgical intervention in the treatment of BPH.

7.      Learn about phytotherapy, a class of treatment using plants or plant extracts for medicinal purposes. The use of phytotherapy for BPH is popular in Europe, and enthusiasm for this treatment is growing in the United States. Although some studies have noted improvements in symptom scores and flow rates, others show no benefit beyond placebo, so use phytotherapy with caution.

8.      Consider a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) if symptoms are severe and other therapies have failed. To visualize what a TURP is, think of a plumber unclogging a pipe. Most TURP procedures use spinal anesthesia, require no incision and only a brief hospital stay, preserve continence and potency, and produce results superior to that of any other minimally invasive therapy. Possible complications include retrograde ejaculation (semen entering the bladder) and stricture (the formation of scar tissue).

9.      Research other minimally invasive procedures that open the urinary channel by destroying prostate tissue. Though not as effective as TURP, these procedures do not require an incision and may reduce complications. They include laser therapy, transurethral electrovaporization, hyperthermia, transurethral needle ablation, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and intraurethral stents.

10.  Most importantly, get an annual prostate examination after age 40. This is especially true if prostate cancer runs in your familyÑa man is 30 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer if a relative had the disease. Approximately one in seven men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, and 240,000 cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States alone.

The options described above will help every patient with BPH symptoms make an intelligent treatment choice in consultation with his physician. The right treatment can dramatically improve a patientÕs quality of life with minimal side effects, and several minimally invasive treatment options can improve symptoms while preserving potency and continence.

Log Cabin Republicans PAC Statement on Presidential Endorsement Decision

“Trust, but verify.”

So cautioned former President Ronald Reagan who inspired our founding in 1977—and it is a solemn understanding of that very instruction from our 40th president that compels Log Cabin Republicans to withhold endorsement from our Party’s current nominee.

Mr. Trump is perhaps the most pro-LGBT presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party. His unprecedented overtures to the “LGBTQ community”—a first for any major-party candidate in our nation’s history—are worthy of praise, and should serve as a clarion call to the GOP that the days of needing to toe an anti-LGBT line are now a thing of the past.

But Log Cabin Republicans have long emphasized that we are not a single-issue organization, nor are our members single-issue voters. Even if we were, rhetoric alone regarding LGBT issues does not equate to doctrine. As Mr. Trump spoke positively about the LGBT community in the United States, he concurrently surrounded himself with senior advisors with a record of opposing LGBT equality, and committed himself to supporting legislation such as the so-called “First Amendment Defense Act” that Log Cabin Republicans opposes.

Should Mr. Trump become our nation’s next President, Log Cabin Republicans welcomes the opportunity to work with his administration to ensure the advances in LGBT freedom we have fought for and secured will continue.

Until and unless that happens, our trust would be misplaced.

Log Cabin Republicans will spend the remainder of the 2016 election cycle committed to preserving and growing GOP majorities in the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

One Colorado: Amendment 70 benefits LGBTQ Coloradans and their families

There are less than 3 weeks left until Election Day and One Colorado is doing everything they can to make sure Colorado voters know what’s on the ballot and what is at stake this November.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families will greatly benefit from an initiative on the 2016 ballot that will raise the minimum wage.

One Colorado is supporting Amendment 70, which will raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour, gradually and responsibly, by 2020.

A huge factor holding our communities back is the current minimum wage of $8.31. A full-time minimum wage worker takes home less than $300 per week — not nearly enough to afford food, rent, and other basic needs. LGBTQ Coloradans, and especially transgender Coloradans, are more likely than others to be living in poverty (1). In particular, transgender Coloradans have a lower household income than the general population, despite having a higher education rate (2).

LGBTQ Coloradans who are working full time shouldn't have to live in poverty. Sign up to help One Colorado make phone calls in support of Amendment 70 and pro-LGBTQ candidates!

Amendment 70 will boost the income for nearly half a million workers in Colorado who are trying to get by on less than $300 per week, helping lift many out of poverty.

If you support raising the minimum wage, sign up to help support Amendment 70 — and then make sure you vote YES on 70 when you get your ballot in the mail.

Kate Bush to release live album 'Before The Dawn'

In March 2014, Kate Bush announced plans to perform 15 shows in London in August and September that year, her first live shows since 1979. The shows sold out so quickly that a further 7 were immediately added, with all shows selling out in 15 minutes. Kate's own website crashed with the demand.

The first night of the shows prompted a complete media frenzy with the U.K.'s Evening Standard declaring that the show was "an extraordinary mix of magical ideas, stunning visuals, attention to detail and remarkable music - she was so obviously, so unambiguously brilliant, it made last night something to tell the grandchildren about."

Later that year the show won the special Editor's award at the highly prestigious London Theatre Awards, the only contemporary music show to do so.

On December 2nd, the live album Before The Dawn will be released in a 3-DISC CD deluxe edition and a deluxe 4-DISC 180-GRAM vinyl edition. The conceptual heart of the show is reflected in the CD format, which is split around the two integral pieces - 'The Ninth Wave' and 'A Sky Of Honey.'
