Denver County Fair 2012: Bigger, better, and gayer than ever!
The Denver County Fair returns this year to the National Western Complex on August 10 - 12 and we hear it's going to be gayer than ever!
This annual event celebrates the creativity and personality of
Denver, with events, exhibitors, blue ribbon competitions and more!
Denver County Fair honors the fine traditions and
values of America’s county fairs, which have been enjoyed by millions
of people for over 100 years.
But, they are NEW and they are CUTTING EDGE! Although land was bought for a
Denver Fair in the 1800s, that plan was interrupted by a little thing
called the “Civil War” and no fair was ever launched. (That land is now
City Park, by the way.) Somehow, the idea never came to fruition until
NOW – in the 21st century, when Denver is a modern, bustling metropolis,
forging a reputation as “the new creative capital.”

Denver County Fair 2012: New and exciting!
With the Denver County Fair
just two months away, Coloradoans should be planning and plotting what
to enter in the Blue Ribbon Competitions! With over 100 categories, and
$50 cash accompanying each blue ribbon, the opportunities - and the
stakes - are high!
To
sweeten the pot this year, each competiton category has a designated
non-profit charity beneficiary. For every $5 competition entry fee paid,
$1 goes to the charity.
"It's
a way to get more of our favorite local business and non-profits
involved," explains Fair co-owner and Community Director, Tracy Weil.
"We get to help them out and bring attention to thier causes in a
really targeted way. We've tried to select charities that fit with the
themes of each Pavilon and its competitions."
So,
if you enter a tomato into our "Celebrity Look-a-like Produce"
competition in the Backyard Farm and Garden Pavilon, $1.00 of your entry
fee will go directly to GrowHaus, that pavilion's charity partner.
Other pavilion charities include Maxfund (Animal Pavilion); Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (Rocky Mountain Chapter) (Kids Pavilion); The Conflict Center - Anti-Bullying programs (Geek Pavilion); VSA/Access Gallery (Arts Pavilion); SafeHouse Denver (Craft Pavilion) and SameCafe
(Kitchen Paviilion). Others are still being finalized. In addition to
receiving the 20% competition entry donation, each charity will be
involved in cross-promotions, and will have a complimentary booth in its
sponsoring pavilion.
New Competition Categories
What
qualifies as a competition entry? Everything from pies to poems; from
bhubarb to robots, from chickens to...chicken impressions ( Yes, there
is a Human Chicken Competition, judged by the Colorado Poultry
Association...) And if you don't score the coveted Blue Ribbon, there's
always a chance you'll take home the 2nd or 3rd place irbbons in each
category.
The Denver County Fair is
unique among the nation's county fairs in its bounty of
non-tradititional competition categories. And with two new themed
Pavilions this year ( Kids Pavilion and Geek Pavilion), there are even
more categories to enjoy.
"You can enter a homemade robot into our Critter Crunch Fighting Robots event on Saturday," says Dana Cain,
co-owner and Director of the Fair. "Lots of folks don't realize that
the Robot Wars phenomenon began here in Denver - at a local science
fiction convention called MileHiCon. Those guys are running this event
for us."
The
Geek Pavilion also includes categories for "Best Invention, " Best
Geeky Vintage Toy Collectible," "Best Science Art," " Best Original
Comic Book" and more. The new Kids Pavilion includes categories found
throughout the fair, but with simplifications and age designations for
entrants.
The full list of competition categories, along with guidelines and prize details, may be found online here.
New Registration Software for Faster Check-In
This
year's online registration is handled with a new streamlined software
package that will make it easier to register, and easier to drop off
your entries at the fair. Says Denver County Fair Competition Director, Vikki Robertson,
" The new system will mean shorter lines and no filling out tags by
hand. I think the entrants will really like it. We'll be able to process
more entries, faster."
"We're
encouraging everyone to 'bring out their best,' says Weil. "County
Fairs are all about neighbors sharing and engaging in fun competitions.
It's all about the blue ribbons! So, for everyone who's ever thought
they make the best cherry pie, or the coolest hand-knit scarves, here is
their chance to prove it."
"Last
year, Denverites got their first taste of Blue Ribbon Fever," says
Cain. "It was all new to most of them. This year, the citizens of
Denver are ready to BRING IT! We're expecting to double or triple the
number of competition entries. And that will be good for the fair, the
folks who come to see the fair, the winners, and the charities. Really
... everyone wins."

Tickets on sale now to the 2nd Annual Denver County Fair!
Tickets went on sale last week for the second annual Denver County Fair. Last year's big debut was Denver's shout heard 'round the world, as a national AP story touting the fair's innovative new take on the classic county fair was picked up by more than 250 national news outets. including the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, NPR, CNN, CBS national radio and many others.
"We started getting emails and calls from people all over the place, saying they were planning their 2012 vacations around the Denver County Fair," says Fair co-owner and director Dana Cain. "And I mean - like even a lady in New Zealand. People are really excited about what we're creating. And we're pretty passionate about showing the world that Denver is the New Creative Capital."
Year two will bring even more innovation to the classic county fair scenario, including an indoor carnival and the world's first county fair "Geek Pavilion."
"We learned so much our first year out," says Fair co-owner and community director, Tracy Weil. "What people loved most of all were the live competitions - being able to just jump on stage and go for the blue ribbon, while the crowds cheer you on. That's something you can't get anywhere else. We're excited to showcase the local Denver metro people and their creativity and talent, too. We're celebrating a part of Denver's coolness and culture that is central to who we are - and it's the brilliance of the individuals who make up the community."
The Denver County Fair is held at the National Western Complex, in 12 adjoining indoor pavilions - each with its own theme. Each Pavilion has it's own theme-appropriate blue ribbon competitions, local exhibitors and vendors and a stage for entertainment, judging and demos. Pavilion themes range from the traditional (Craft Pavilion, Kitchen Pavilion, Animal Pavilion) to the unique-to-this-fair areas, like the Holistic Pavilion, the Fashion Pavilion, the new Geek Pavilion and the 21st century Freak Show.
"We're the only county fair in the WORLD with a Geek Pavilion," laughs Cain. "I got my start running science fiction convetions, so this was a natural for me, and it turns out that Denver is really a mecca for geeks. We actually invented robot wars - right here, at MileHiCon, so we're having a blue ribbon fighting robots competition. Denver has a lot of really great science fiction and fantasy conventions, and it's been a growing tradition here for decades. Our annual StarFest is the biggest media con between the two coasts. And we have the Tech Center and Lockheed Martin and all sorts of world class geekery going on here. So, the Denver County Fair is celebrating that!"
Weil's passions play into another aspect of the fair. "I'm super excited about what's happening with the Backyard Farm & Garden Pavilion this year," he says, "I have a big tomato farm at my place in RiNo. We'll be getting a lot more competing fruits and vegetables with our new August dates, and we're working on bringing in a Farmer's Market as part of the pavilion. We're also expanding our Green program at the fair. We were chosen by Whole Foods to be one of the five major summer festivals to participate in a massive "Green Up Denver" program, and we're working to become a zero waste event."
Denver County Fair hours, August 10 - 12, are Friday 10am-10pm; Saturday 10am-10pm and Sunday 10am-6pm. Early Bird Discount Tickets are for sale now, online at www.denvercountyfair.org. Adult tickets are $8/day and tickets for kids, seniors and military personnel are $4/day during May and June only. Weekend passes, Family 4-packs and group tickets are also available.
