All about altitude sickness

The Gay and Lesbian Sierrans and the Indian Peaks Group will be sponsoring an altitude sickness seminar on Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Linda Keyes will speak on the types, treatment, and prevention of altitude sickness. As a Coloradan, you owe it to yourself to understand altitude sickness, and Dr. Keyes is expert at presenting the concepts clearly and concisely.

Dr. Keyes is a Yale Med School graduate and an emergency physician at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital . She has been involved in altitude-related medical research since she was a medical student, married a climber, and spends as much time as she can climbing, trekking, and generally having fun at high altitude.

She has extensive high altitude medical experience that includes working at the Himalaya Rescue Association Clinic at 14,000’ in Pheriche , Nepal , and as the expedition doctor on the Colorado Gangapurna expedition.

The presentation is at Sunrise Assisted Living, 3955 28th Street in north Boulder – a little south of Jay Road along 28th Street , and on the west side of 28th. Free – arrive early for best seating. For more information contact Dave Hawley at 303-443-2332.

Upcoming events with the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans

The Gay and Lesbian Sierrans have plenty of fun and exciting adventures coming up.

Join the GLS for a fun evening of wine tasting, dinner, and a movie on Saturday, March 21. They first visit a beautiful new wine shop co-owned by a GLS member. It is located in Greenwood Village. Enjoy a complimentary wine tasting of four wines (two white and two red). They carry a variety of wines from around the world, spirits, beers, and other fun gifts and accessories. Members will receive 10% off their purchases.

After aperitifs at the store, grab a quick bite to eat at a nearby restaurant, and then walk next door to the Landmark Theater to watch a current-run movie. Note: film to be determined.

Contact Melanie at melaniejromero@msn.com or Phil at bringyour4k@msn.com to sign up.

Then on Sunday, March 22nd, join Galen and John for a hike up Flagstaff Mountain, just west of Boulder. Looking west from Mays Point at the top of the mountain are incredible views of Indian Peaks. Follow Boy Scout Trail to Mays Point after reaching the amphitheater. Boy Scout trail is a half-mile walk on flat surface. The one and a half mile trail to the Amphitheater will take about three hours round trip with an 1120 ft. altitude gain. This trail is moderate to strenuous with steep and rocky parts that may be icy in places. Though the trail doesn’t follow Flagstaff Road; it does cross the road a number of times. There are views to the east that overlook the city of Boulder. You will want to bring a lunch, water, sunblock, sunglasses, hat, rain gear, and sturdy warm boots. Don’t forget your winter gear. After all, it is March. If you’re interested contact John at john_waddell@comcast.net

Upcoming outings with the GLS

Here are a couple of upcoming outings for the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans. Haven't had a chance to go along on one of their excursions yet but I definitely plan to. I'm all about hiking and biking and camping and kayaking and all that good stuff this year.

Saturday, March 14th, 2009
American Mountaineering Museum
Golden, Colorado

The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum opened a year ago and is the only museum of its type in the United States. Take advantage of its location in our own backyard and afterwards go to Woody’s Pizza for lunch.

“The mission of the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum is to inspire in our visitors a greater appreciation for the mountains and for mountaineering, in all of its facets, including the cultural and inspirational qualities of the mountains and the sport; to help in the cause to preserve the mountains and the history of mountaineering; to educate our visitors and in so doing enhance their enjoyment and safety in the mountains.”

Group admission (8 or more) is $5.00 per person, otherwise $6.50. Bring a sense of curiosity about the mountains and an appetite for excellent pizza (Woody’s has a good beer selection as well). To sign up, contact Kate at kavadenver@yahoo.com or 720-635-9516. You must provide your telephone number in order to get on the roster. This outing is limited to 12.

This is a moderate hike of 5 miles round trip with 1355 feet elevation gain. Are you a member yet?

Are you a Sierra Club and a GLS (Gay and Lesbian Sierrans) member yet? If not, consider becoming both a Sierra Club member and a member of GLS. Your Sierra Club membership support allows the Club to continue its important work in battling the barrage of threats to the environment.

By becoming a GLS member, you will allow the group to fund its conservation work projects (such as Capitol Peak).

To become a Sierra Club member, just go here www.sierraclub.org/ and select the "Join" button on the right.

Getting out with the GLS

Here is another fine outing from the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans (GLS).

Join the group on February 21 for a moderate rated snow shoe to Lost Lake in Eldora, Colorado.

This approach takes you past the abandoned Hessie town site, across open meadows, and into pine forests blanketed with snow.

Above one last ascent, Lost Lake suddenly appears, slumbering in its coats of ice and frost.

The GLS will tarry at this scenic locale for lunch before heading back.

The half-day hike is six miles round trip and an 900 feet elevation gain. You'll need to bring snow shoes, lots of warm wind-proof clothing layers (including gloves and hats), sun protection, water, and snacks and lunch. Contact Phil at bringyour4k@msn.com to sign up.

Gay and Lesbian Sierrans go to the movies

GLS goes to the movies at the historic Boulder Theater. Join your fellow outdoors enthusiasts for the best short films from the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival on Wednesday, February 25 in Boulder. There are always lots of adrenaline-rushing scenes of extreme gonzo climbers, kayakers, and skiers. Mixed in with them are short films of drama, comedy, and environmentalism. We'll meet for dinner before the show. This event sells out quickly. Contact Phil at bringyour4k@msn.com to sign up.
