Ted Trimpa to be Honored at this year's Jokers, Jewels & Justice

The GLBT Community Center of Colorado (The Center) will honor lawyer and lobbyist Ted Trimpa as 'Barrister of the Year' at the upcoming Jokers, Jewels & Justice event taking place at the Magnolia Hotel on March 10 from 6-9:30pm.  Each year the Barrister of the Year award recognizes a Colorado-based lawyer or legal  organization's efforts on behalf of LGBT equality issues.

"I feel very honored by this," said Trimpa (pictured), once famously referred to as Colorado's "answer to Karl Rove"  in an Atlantic article about Colorado's 'Gay Mafia'. "I've been committed to working for the community for a number of years and I don't do it for the awards but it is nice to get recognized."
Jokers, Jewels & Justice is Colorado's largest and most successful LGBT legal event and is a fundraiser for The Center's Legal & Advocacy Program. Originally founded in 1992 as the Colorado Legal Initiatives Project to oppose Colorado's discriminatory constitutional Amendment 2, The Center's Legal & Advocacy Program is the only legal program in Colorado dedicated solely to the equality and dignity of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and those with HIV.

Trimpa's message to Colorado's LGBT community is one of pride and activism. "I think being out in every way and unapologetic about it is very important," he said. "Be out. Be proud. Be involved. And not just in gay rights organizations. The time-proven quickest way to equality is state-level action. We spend way too much time and money in DC. State legislators are our friends. They really are trying to do the right thing. Sometimes you have to meet people where they are and, over time, bring them over to where you want them to be."

"We are pleased to honor Ted for his many contributions to advancing the LGBT community," said Carlos Martinez, Executive Director of The Center. "His commitment to the advancement of LGBT rights and equality - along with his talent for behind-the-scenes negotiations - makes him the ideal candidate for this year's Barrister of the Year award."

Jokers, Jewels and Justice 2010 was a great success, bringing in about $30,000 to The Center's Legal and Advocacy program.

The Center thanks everyone who participated, volunteered, donated to the Silent Auction or helped out in any way.

Denise Maes to be honored at 2010 Jokers, Jewels & Justice

Denver attorney and community leader Denise Maes will be honored in March at The Center's annual Legal Advocacy fundraiser Jokers, Jewels & Justice.

A lawyer and shareholder at Berenbaum Weinshienk PC, Maes was named General Counsel to the White House Office of Administration in July 2009. She is also on the board of the Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as well as Mi Casa Resource Center and the Kroenke Sports Hispanic Advisory Council.

"I am very in tune to (my) humble beginnings, so that is why it is really important to continue to mentor young women and do a lot of community work," Maes told Law Week Colorado last year.

Jokers, Jewels & Justice takes place this year on March 11 at The Curtis Hotel in Denver.

Founded in 1992 to oppose the Colorado’s discriminatory constitutional Amendment 2, CLIP is the only legal project in Colorado dedicated solely to the equality and dignity of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and those with HIV. CLIP accomplishes its mission through the legal hotline, civil rights litigation and mediation, media work, and public education.

This year the event will be honoring the Colorado Anti-Violence Project as CLIP's Cooperating Non-Profit of the Year for its outstanding work around the Angie Zapata murder and constant support of her family and the LGBT Community.

The VIP reception begins at 6pm, and general admission begins at 6:30 pm with an open bar and catered appetizers. The evening’s gaming activities will include blackjack, craps and roulette tables, all run by a professional casino company.
