Officials in Douglas County, Neb., voted in favor of a measure Tuesday that would extend benefits to spouses of same-sex employees legally married in other states. The county will begin processing the claims Jan. 1.
"I think it's the right thing to do," said county board member Mike Boyle. "I think it's the legal thing to do."

Nebraska Legislature could block LGBT protections in Omaha
Nebraska lawmakers at the municipal and state level are on a collision course over a proposal
to enact an LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance in Omaha. Omaha City Councilman Ben
Gray is pushing to adopt the measure, but a state senator wants to make it illegal for local
jurisdictions to enact nondiscrimination laws that go beyond statewide protections.
