Get Yourself Tested: Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains offering $10 HIV/STD testing today

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the state’s rate of reported chlamydia and gonorrhea significantly increased from 2003 to 2007, mirroring national trends.

Today, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains will offer $10 STD testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea and $10 HIV testing 27.

“The doctors and nurses at Planned Parenthood hear from young patients all the time that talking about getting tested is truly difficult but such a relief once they get talking,” said PPRM President and CEO Vicki Cowart. “We know that the GYT campaign works. In the first year of the campaign, PPRM health centers saw a ten-fold increase in testing compared to an average day – seeing nearly 1,500 people. We are committed to increasing the number of young people who get tested again this year. The good news is that testing for many STDs is simple, it doesn’t hurt, often does not even involve needles.”

A quick Q&A with MileHi (and a brief but sexy David Hasselhoff interlude)

A quick Q&A with MileHi
by Drew Wilson

Their new CD, 'You're Beautiful, What's Your Heritage?,' is available now on iTunes and professional snowboarders-turned-rockstars JJ Thomas and Jeff Cormack, aka MileHi, will be available for your listening pleasure tomorrow night as part of the GYT Concert for a Cause presented by Planned Parenthood of the Rockies at 3 Kings Tavern. And tickets are only $5!

Drew: Do you guys think you're cooler than me because you're professional snowboarders and rockstars?
MileHi: No. Half of our time is spent wondering what the hell we are even doing and the other half we are actually doing it. So between doing what we are doing and questioning what we are doing, we don't really have any time to think or care about how cool anyone is.

How would you describe your music for someone who hasn't heard it?
It's our own little creation of electronic sounds combined with basic rock/pop songs. Similar to Iron Maiden ... but not really at all even close.

How did MileHi come about?
We have known each other since we were about 10 years old and we always had these ridiculous freestyles. We would just make up our own lyrics to everything. I (Jeff) have been a musician since I was a kid and have been writing music my entire life. So we just decided to mess around and make some funny music for our dumb freestyles.

Which of the two of you is the sexiest and why?
David Hasselhoff.

Why should people come see MileHi at the GYT Concert for a Cause on April 15?
Well, it's Tax Day so everybody wins. If you are getting a refund, come celebrate by drinking and dancing. If you owe money, come drinking and dancing to forget about it. More importantly, come out to support a great cause and raise awareness. The wonderful people at Planned Parenthood have organized an awesome event with a wide variety of live music and everyone involved is really looking forward to having a great time at the event.

For the entire month of April, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains will be offering STD information and encouraging awareness for testing. Check back often to learn more about GYT  (Get Yourself Tested!). GYT is about taking control of YOUR (sex) life by getting tested - and talking openly about it. Getting tested is easier than ever before. What are you waiting for?

Concert for a Cause: MileHi Sound, Night of Joy, Joshua Novak

Condom check!

Planned Parenthood reminds us all to check the expiration dates on our condoms when we change our clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

Expired condoms are more likely to break so stock up on a fresh supply.

Yeah, I'm a little late but the information still applies. - via Jezebel

World premiere of 'Pedro' at Starz

In 2008, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention held its biennial conference on sexually transmitted diseases and announced that at least one out of every four teenaged girls in the United States has a sexually transmitted disease. It is estimated that nearly 19 million new STDs occur each year, and that by the age of 25, one in two sexually active young people will contract a STD.

During the month of April, MTV and Planned Parenthood are teaming up to inform young people about sexually transmitted diseases and infections and encourage routine testing and treatment. The campaign kicks off on April 1 with the world premiere of 'Pedro'. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains will host a film screening of 'Pedro' at the Starz FilmCenter on April 1.

This MTV film celebrates the life of Pedro Zamora, an HIV-positive 'Real World' cast member who died of AIDS-related complications in 1994. A facilitated discussion featuring a panel of community sexual health experts and moderator Dr. Mark Thrun, director of the HIV/STD Control Program for Denver Public Health, will immediately follow the screening.

Also after the screening of 'Pedro', MTV and Planned Parenthood will unveil a major announcement. AS April is STD Awareness month, the topic couldn’t be timelier to bring local attention to a serious public health concern and the action being taken in our community to encourage individual accountability and promote awareness. The latest research of the rate of STDs in Colorado, reported by the Department of Public Health and Environment, shows an overall rate of 281.3 per 100,000 population. Denver’s rate is two and a half times that rate at 648.9, and has the distinction of having the highest STD rates in the state.
