Take One Colorado's needs assessment to help shape LGBTQ priorities

Six years ago, One Colorado asked lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their families across our state to complete a survey to determine what issues were affecting them.

The survey was provided in English and Spanish and more than 4,600 people responded. The results shaped the priorities of our organization, with three main themes: expanding relationship recognition, ensuring LGBTQ youth feel safe and welcome in their schools, and having access to health care.

The fight for LGBTQ equality is not over and we want to make sure our priorities align with our community and with Colorado.

The Feline Fix - Caring for Colorado's Community Cats

More than 20,000 cats are euthanized annually in Colorado simply because there are not enough homes for them all. Unfortunately, we can't simply adopt our way out of the problem.

An unaltered female cat, tame or feral, may become pregnant as early as five months of age and bear two to three litters per year for her entire life; which for a feral cat is roughly five years.

The purpose of Divine Feline and it's clinic, The Feline Fix, is to reduce the number of unwanted and homeless cats and to promote the health and welfare of all cats, feral and tame, through the practice of providing quality and affordable spay and neuter services and the practice of TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).

Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker to Dedicate Historic Marker to “Mother of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement”

The Equality Forum, the nation’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights summit, announced today that former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, the first openly LGBT mayor of a major American city, will serve as the keynote speaker for the Barbara Gittings’ Residence Historic Marker Dedication ceremony slated for Tuesday, July 26th.

“As the nation’s first openly LGBT mayor of a major American city, former Houston Mayor Annise Parker is the right person to be dedicating this historic marker to the ‘Mother of the LGBT civil rights movement’,” said Malcolm Lazin, Equality Forum’s Founder and Executive Director.

Known as the “Mother of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement”, Barbara Gittings (July 31, 1932 – February 18, 2007) resided in Philadelphia, PA with her partner, Kay Lahusen. She was the editor of the first lesbian publication. With Frank Kameny, she organized the Annual Reminders at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, which launched the LGBT civil rights movement. Gittings spearheaded the successful initiative to have the American Library Association include gay and lesbian books in the nation’s card catalogues and libraries. Kameny and Gittings challenged the American Psychiatric Association, resulting in homosexuality being removed from the list of mental illnesses.

Log Cabin Republicans President Blasts Party's Anti-LGBT Platform

By Gregory T. Angelo
President, Log Cabin Republicans

There's no way to sugar-coat this: I'm mad as hell — and I know you are, too.

Moments ago, the Republican Party passed the most anti-LGBT Platform in the Party's 162-year history.

Opposition to marriage equality, nonsense about bathrooms, an endorsement of the debunked psychological practice of "pray the gay away" — it's all in there.

This isn't my GOP, and I know it's not yours either. Heck, it's not even Donald Trump's! When given a chance to follow the lead of our presumptive presidential nominee and reach out to the LGBT community in the wake of the awful terrorist massacre in Orlando on the gay nightclub Pulse, the Platform Committee said NO.

BUT...now is not the time to sit around feeling sorry for ourselves. Log Cabin Republicans has been officially credentialed for the Republican National Convention, and when it convenes in Cleveland in a mere 6 days' time I want to be able to take a stand, but we're going to need your support to do it.

Cleveland is rightly making the most of their time in the spotlight, and prices for advertising in area news outlets are sky-high.

That's why I'm writing to ask for your help.

Please give today and give generously — $500, $250, $100, or whatever you can give would go a long way to ensuring we don't go quietly into the night.

Take back the Platform. Take back the Party. Stand up today and let the folks on the Platform Committee who paved the way to this foolishness know you're not going down without a fight!

OUT on DVD/VOD: Downriver

Breaking Glass Pictures will release their latest LGBT title DOWNRIVER on VOD and DVD August 23, 2016. Reminiscent of Winter's Bone, DOWNRIVER is a chilling mystery from award-winning writer/director Grant Scicluna that courageously deals with loss, identity, trauma, and hard-won redemption.

James (Reef Ireland) has just been released from prison after serving time for drowning a little boy when he himself was just a child. The boy's body was never found, and James, guilt-ridden and still haunted by questions about what really happened that day, returns to the rural community where the crime took place and undertakes a quest to find the body. Along the way, he is confronted by bullies and sexual predators from his past, and the punishment he risks by breaking parole now pales next to the threat of violence from the shadowy characters emerging all around him.

Pokemon GOes to the Denver County Fair! Catch 'em all weekend!

The Denver County Fair will be hosting a Poké-Hunt all weekend during the fair with Pokémon Go Lure Parties each day.

By now, you've probably heard of the augmented-reality mobile game "Pokémon Go," in which players move throughout the real world to hunt for and capture digital Pokémon. This cultural phenomenon is coming to the 6th Annual Denver County Fair! "We're changing up the County Fair model as usual," says the fairs Creative Director Tracy Weil. "We're the only county fair with a Geek Pavilion so it seemed fitting to host a live Poké-Hunt all weekend."

Denver County Fair organizers will set over 200 Pokémon "Lures" over the weekend starting on Friday, July 29th at 4pm near the National Western PokéStop. Once activated, "Lure" modules will attract wild Pokémon to that location. Prized characters we hope to attract are Mewtwo and Mew, some of the rarest as well as Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Visitors can download and create a Pokémon Go" account for free from the Google Play or App stores. The Poké-Hunt is free to all visitors to the Denver County Fair!

"We'll also be organizing a "Pokémon Go' Lure Party" on Friday evening at 6pm as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons," said Weil. The fair will be setting multiple lures for the party and visitors can meet up in the Geek Pavilion after to exchange tips and stories of which Pokémon characters they've captured. Pokémon Tournaments will also be held in the near by Pokémon Gym.

The Denver County Fair will also be doing a social media promotion on Facebook with the game. If users post their photo of the Pokémon they caught at the fair on the Denver County Fair Facebook page they will be entered into a contest for a chance to win one of (5) Family of Four passes for the 2017 Denver County Fair!

Donald Trump Refuses to Reveal Position on Major LGBT Civil Rights Bill

Equality Forum, the nation’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights summit, sent a letter dated June 14, 2016 to the Donald J. Trump for President’s New York and Alexandria, Virginia campaign offices requesting the candidate’s position on the Equality Act, asking Does Mr. Trump support or oppose the passage of the Equality Act?

To date, the Trump campaign has not responded.

“Mr. Trump’s campaign is in part based on his asserted willingness to tell it like it is. He claims that he is not a hater," said Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director, Equality Forum. “For an estimated 20 million LGBT Americans, the Equality Act would protect them in their daily lives and its passage would send a historic message that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity will not be tolerated by our federal government.”

The Equality Act, a bipartisan bill was introduced last year in the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The legislation would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit and the judicial system.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has pledged her support for the Equality Act.

In the letter, Equality Forum noted that Mr. Trump’s stated in response to the Orlando massacre that he is a “real friend” of the LGBT community.

“By not responding to whether he supports or opposes the Equality Act, Mr. Trump lacks the backbone and appears to contradict his claim to be a better friend to the gay community than Mrs. Clinton. If these assumptions are inaccurate, we call on Mr. Trump to tell American voters whether he supports or opposes the Equality Act," Mr. Lazin concluded.
