Contact Your Senators and Representatives for Charlie and David

If you open a business, it should be open to all.

That simple premise – that business owners shouldn't get to discriminate against people simply because of who they are – is at the heart of our case at the Supreme Court in December. The ACLU's clients, Colorado couple Charlie and David, tried to buy a wedding cake, and they were refused service because they’re gay.

In any Supreme Court case, it can be hard to see how individual activists and advocates can make a difference. After all, the Justices listen to arguments from lawyers and the people on each side of a suit. But they also listen to friend-of-the-court briefs, statements of support for each side.

Right now, your senators and representatives in Congress are deciding whether to join a brief in support of Charlie and David. Will you ask your Members of Congress to join a friend-of-the-court brief and stand up for equality?

Call for Alumni: 25th Anniversary of the Auraria LGBTQ Student Resource Center

By Steve Willich, Director, LGBTQ Student Resource Center at Auraria

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of our Center here on campus! In 1992, Colorado citizens voted to allow discrimination against gay and lesbian citizens, which earned us the moniker of being the Hate State. There was a lot of student activism on campus around this issue, and as a result, in October of that year, our Center was founded.

Since then, the program has grown significantly, touching the lives of many LGBTQIA+ students, staff, faculty, alumni and our allies.

I would like to put together an event that recognizes and celebrates the progress that we’ve made throughout the years. As one of the oldest Centers in the United States, I think we have something pretty special to celebrate!

I would like to put together a group of alumni and friends who would be interested in helping to plan and execute a celebratory event in the spring semester. If you or anyone that you know might be interested, please email me at: swillich@msudenver.edu. I’m hoping to have a core planning group put together by the end of October.

I hope that you’ll consider joining the planning committee, and attend the event when it happens!

Meet the genderqueer activist behind the Monopoly Man

Amanda Werner, the activist who dressed up as the Monopoly Man at a U.S. Senate hearing on Equifax and “won the Internet,” recently came out to the nation as genderqueer, nonbinary and bisexual. Werner made an announcement to professional colleagues last week on National Coming Out Day, one week after becoming a national media sensation.

“I had not planned to come out so publicly quite yet. But when journalists asked for my pronouns after the stunt, I knew this was the moment to get it right,” said Werner, who uses the gender-neutral pronouns they, them and their. “I am grateful to be able to leverage this attention to raise the visibility of nonbinary people and represent the larger queer and trans communities in my activism.”

Werner, who serves as arbitration campaign manager for Public Citizen and Americans for Financial Reform, dressed up as the Monopoly Man and sat directly behind Equifax CEO Richard Smith at a U.S. Senate Banking Committee hearing on Oct. 4. The stunt enraptured viewers as the Monopoly Man was seen adjusting a monocle, wiping their brow with an oversized hundred-dollar bill and chasing down Smith with a bag of money after the hearing.

Werner’s appearance as the Monopoly Man received glowing coverage from the likes of CNBC, NPR, Perez Hilton, GQ, Breitbart, Time, Fox Business, the BBC and Teen Vogue. Werner was called “the consumer protection hero we need,” “your new best friend” and “magical.” The popularity of the Monopoly Man didn’t end there. An Oct. 6 “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) conversation with the Monopoly Man on Reddit has garnered more than 1.2 million views and is the eighth most popular AMA of all time – surpassing chats with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and the creator of The Simpsons. Werner also discussed their identity as a trans and nonbinary person in response to questions from Reddit users.

The Monopoly Man’s appearance at the Equifax hearing was part of a national campaign to raise awareness about forced arbitration, arguably the most important tool that banks, lenders and financial companies have used to scam and rip off customers. Forced arbitration denies customers their day in court – requiring them to use a secretive, private arbitration system rigged to protect corporate wrongdoers. In response to this abusive practice, the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a rule restoring consumers’ right to go to court. But now the Senate is considering a fast-tracked Congressional Review Act resolution (S.J. Res. 47) that would overturn the rule, and lawmakers must vote on it by Nov. 13. Werner is an attorney and an expert on forced arbitration.

“Make no mistake: Forced arbitration is a rigged game, one that the bank nearly always wins. It gives companies like Wells Fargo and Equifax a monopoly over our system of justice by blocking consumers’ access to the courts,” said Werner. “The CRA resolution striking down the arbitration rule is a virtual Get Out of Jail Free card for companies engaged in financial scams. It should not pass go.”

morgxn - bruised

Los Angeles-based artist morgxn releases the new track “bruised”, premiering it exclusively via Out Magazine, just two weeks before heading out on tour with Phoebe Ryan. Out Magazine describes: "At its core, “bruised” is relatable and cathartic, but the single still demands you dance—a winning balance for the burgeoning artist." While Billboard says the following about “bruised”: “morgxn shows off his flawless tenor chops”.

His last track “xx” (pronounced kiss kiss) was revealed 2 months ago and included a sultry video “xx” which NME premiered HERE (+ VEVO HERE). The visuals take viewers through a dimly lit, sensual, high-energy dance party as morgxn’s smooth falsetto fills the room. The video is directed by MOSES, who also worked with morgxn on his iconic “home” video.

Nice To See StevieB: Freezin' Steven

By StevieB

It was that time of year again. It seems that it comes faster every year.

The time, once a year, when I winterize the house. Not the whole weather strip, drain garden hoses, and other manly pursuits of home maintenance. More like pulling the light comforter off the bed and bringing out the heavy down comforter from its Space Bag induced summer casket.

Pulling out the heavy blankets means that I can finally crank open the bedroom window and slide under my over-sized down comfiness. I also did my annual trip to buy new pillows and new sheets to add to the comfort level.

Part of this tradition is wrapping the bedroom’s air vent in foil; this is to block the furnace from blasting heat into the bedroom. Making the bedroom as I sleep also suitable for preserving meat. I wonder if there’s a correlation?

This morning was the first, really chilled morning. The dog had reenacted his time in a German POW camp and tunneled his way down into the sub-layer of warmth. The Dupioni wafted as it half heartily covered the frost covered window.

It was freezing.

During my thought process of how amazing sleeping in a cold room is, I always forget how frickin’ horrible it is to get out of bed and traverse the ten feet to the bathroom.

Cherry Creek North: Have You Ever Been Someplace That Just Feels Right?

One hundred and forty years ago, Cherry Creek North was part of a small town called Harman. Since then, Cherry Creek North has emerged as a staple in the fabric of Denver and Colorado, blossoming into a very special mixed-use district.

What sets it apart? Perhaps it’s the walkability of the area, or lodging that provides all the comforts of home. Maybe it’s the laughter spilling out of a gallery during a nightly wine tasting, or alfresco dining on a patio laced with flowers. When you’re in Cherry Creek North, you can sit back and exhale. Life feels good here.

Civil and Human Rights Coalition Rebukes Attorney General Sessions’ Oversight Hearing Testimony

Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement following Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ appearance before a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing:

“President Trump has emboldened and enabled hate and division in our country – and Attorney General Sessions is a powerful leader of his divisive agenda. From restricting voting rights, to putting immigrant youth at risk, to issuing a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people, Sessions is at the forefront of this administration’s actions to roll back important civil and human rights protections.

Despite probing questioning by Democratic senators, led by Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, Sessions failed to justify the Trump administration’s systematic effort to undermine civil rights laws and protections. Sessions also ducked important questions about his office’s collusion with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to remove key DACA protections, and with Justice Department involvement with Trump’s sham voter suppression commission.

The significant powers of the Justice Department should not be wielded to serve President Trump’s divisive political agenda. America needs an Attorney General who will enforce our civil rights laws and protect all people. Until that is the case, Congress must continue to use its significant oversight powers to hold Sessions and the rest of the Trump administration accountable for their harmful and dangerous attacks on civil and human rights.”
