Pet Portraits By Maurice Becnel

Immortalize your furry friends with a pet portrait by Maurice Becnel. Clients admire Becnel's ability to capture the essence of a pet's personality in his work.

Says Becnel, "Painting animal portraits, for me, is more fun than it is work. I began painting them several years ago. The first one I did was for a friend on her birthday. Because it was a gift it never dawned on me that other people would commission me to do more. Word got out and before I knew it more and more of the emails I was receiving from my website were going to the dogs! And cats!"

Minister defrocked for officiating gay marriage reinstated into Methodist clergy

Rev. Frank Schaefer was defrocked last year for officiating his gay son's marriage but was recently reinstated by the Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church.

“Rev. Schaefer ... has worked tirelessly and courageously to defend marriage equality, continuing to preach a message of love," commented Dr. Paul Song, Executive Chairman of Courage Campaign. "As the child of two former deacons in the Methodist Church, this decision holds deep personal significance for me. And while the Methodist Church did not express its support for marriage equality despite this technical ruling, we will continue to stand with the thousands of other activists, members of the clergy, and parishioners working to amend the Methodist Church’s stance on marriage.”

Rev. Schaefer is a recipient of the 2014 Spirit of Courage Award.

Same-sex couples win right to adopt in Utah

Utah's Supreme Court last week lifted a stay that had prevented the state Department of Health from issuing birth certificates to same-sex couples adopting children. The stay was put in place in May after several district judges ordered that the birth certificates be issued.

"There is no longer any need for clarification about what the status of these marriages is," Utah Solicitor General Bridget Romano said.

Tranifesto: Putting the Men in Menopause

By Matt Kailey

Shortly after I turned fifty, I started to perspire. It wasn’t the glowy dew that I had produced as a female and it wasn’t the labor-intensive, manly sweat that I like to think comes naturally to a hard-working, macho man who sits behind a desk and types for a living. It started at the top of my head and crept its way down, as if I had slowly stepped into a sauna, head first and then body part by body part, activating sweat glands that I didn’t even know I possessed, until I was left soggy and soaking, my clothes tattooed to my sticky, wet body. It was nature turning a hose on me as if I were some hormone-crazed dog.

This happened whether I was sitting on a blanket in the sun or directly in front of an air-conditioner turned on at full blast. It happened in bed and it happened on the street. It took me a while to realize that not every place I went was mysteriously undergoing random temperature fluctuations. This was internal – my own personal global warming.

The worst thing about these episodes was that they had a scary emotional component that often went with them. This part happened primarily at night, when things are scarier anyway, when I already found myself lying awake for hours wondering what hideous rare disease I was going to die from, how I was going to pay my bills until that time, and what exactly was going to happen to me when the universe stopped expanding and started to fold back in on itself.

Good Chemistry – Denver’s Gay-Friendly Dispensary

GoodChemistry, Denver’s gay-friendly dispensary, is guided by four core principles:

SCIENCE – Good Chemistry believes that Cannabis has significant therapeutic benefits and work to support and expand its study.

ACCESS - Good Chemistry believes that many barriers exist which fundamentally restrict access to safe reliable medical grade cannabis and search for meaningful ways to remove them.

DIGNITY - Good Chemistry believes in the fundamental and inalienable right of a person to choose their medical treatment. Recognizing that often patients who take cannabis are subjected to unfair treatment under the law, Good Chemistry is committed to defending and protecting the rights of their patients.

COMPASSION - Good Chemistry recognizes that medical cannabis is a potent and effective medicine for many patients who cannot afford it and is dedicated to providing for those in need.

HRC President Chad Griffin To Come to Colorado To Deliver LGBT and Ally Voters

On the eve of a crucial election that will determine the shape of the next Congress, today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced that HRC President Chad Griffin will travel to four states with critical races to mobilize thousands of LGBT voters and their allies to get out and vote for equality. As part of HRC’s unprecedented ongoing national effort, Griffin will anchor events for candidates whose wins are important to maintaining a majority of pro-equality leaders in the U.S. Senate, including in Oregon, Colorado, Georgia, and New Hampshire.

“We are at a critical juncture in our fight for full equality,” said HRC President Chad Griffin.  “The outcome of this election will impact whether or not we move forward or backward with fair-minded policies and legislation, and that’s why mobilizing LGBT voters and allies to get out and vote for equality-minded candidates is a key priority.”
According to a poll conducted for HRC by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, LGBT and allied voters were critical to 2012 electoral successes. HRC is working to ensure they make the difference in key races this time around as well.

As part of HRC’s ongoing efforts, on the cross-country tour Griffin will travel in person to multiple local events to urge HRC members to vote for HRC-endorsed candidates in tight races. Winning these races is crucial to maintaining a majority of pro-equality leaders in the U.S. Senate.
  • Oregon: U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley – With over 81,000 HRC members and supporters in Oregon, Griffin will travel to Portland today to join one of the ongoing phone banks for Senator Jeff Merkley. There he’ll be joined by Senator Merkley, Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek, Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, and Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. Through its political action committee (PAC), HRC also launched an online ad emphasizing the critical importance of re-electing Senator Merkley. A longstanding champion for LGBT equality, Senator Merkley was the lead sponsor in the Senate for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). For the last three HRC Congressional Scorecards in a row, Senator Merkley earned a perfect 100% score.

  • Colorado: U.S. Senator Mark Udall – With over 40,000 HRC members and supporters in Colorado, Griffin will travel to Denver on Wednesday, October 29, to join one of the ongoing phone banks for Senator Udall. There he’ll be joined by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Democratic Party Chair Rick Palacio. HRC’s political action committee also launched an online ad emphasizing the critical importance of re-electing Senator Udall, an outspoken advocate for LGBT equality. In addition to being a leader in the successful fight to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, Senator Udall encouraged President Obama to ban LGBT discrimination by federal contractors and has long fought for the passage of ENDA.

  • Georgia: Michelle Nunn – With nearly 40,000 HRC members and supporters in Georgia, on Thursday, October 30, Griffin will travel to Atlanta for one of the ongoing phone banks to help elect Michelle Nunn to the U.S. Senate. There are stark differences between Nunn and her opponent David Purdue, and her strong positions on issues of great importance to LGBT Georgians make her the clear choice for equality.

  • New Hampshire: U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen – With nearly 9,000 HRC members and supporters in New Hampshire, on Saturday, November 1, Griffin will travel to Manchester to join one of the ongoing phone banks to re-elect Senator Shaheen.  Notably, Senator Shaheen was the first U.S. Senator to call for the addition of marriage equality in the Democratic Party platform. She has also been a tireless advocate for extending equal benefits to the same-sex spouses of service members.
Prior to these local events, Griffin will kick off the tour with a remote town hall with Congressman Bruce Braley in his bid for the U.S. Senate.
  • Iowa: Bruce Braley - Firing up LGBT and ally voters in Iowa, Griffin will also join Congressman Braley for a telephone town hall with HRC members.  Braley earned a perfect 100% score on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard for the 113th Congress. He supported ENDA and co-sponsored the Student Non-Discrimination Act and the Safe Schools Improvement Act.
These events are just a small part of HRC’s national efforts. Because every vote counts, HRC is undertaking a major mobilization of LGBT voters and their allies. This includes:
  • Sent millions of election-related action alerts to engage HRC members in endorsed candidate campaigns and to get out the vote for HRC-endorsed candidates
  • Deployed 24 staff members to work on dozens of endorsed candidate campaigns and to mobilize HRC members
  • Coordinated dozens of volunteer phone banks at HRC headquarters and across the country
  • Will launch phone calls to HRC members and supporters to get out the vote in more than 50 priority races
Amplifying and expanding the impact of these efforts, HRC is also investing in an aggressive digital strategy to help get out the vote for equality, including:
  • A national online ad motivating LGBT voters and their allies to get out the vote for equality
  • Online ads in Oregon and Colorado to help re-elect two important pro-equality Senators
  • Facebook advertising urging HRC members to get out the vote in key states
  • Mobile advertising with links to HRC’s website where users can lookup polling locations
  • Twitter advertising to help build social awareness to get out and vote

The 'Together We Are Stronger' Project

People from all around the world took part in the gay selfie project released by the global gay social network Moovz. This project was meant to show the faces of the global gay community, with people from different cultures, with different colors, appearance and races and that speaks different languages. From South to North America and from Europe to as far as Asia - people uploaded their pictures and agreed to be exposed in order to send a message to the world and prove how united is the global gay community.

This is probably the first time that gays from all around the world did something together to send a message that empowers their whole community. Many gay influencers also took part in this project, such as Amanda Lepore, Davey Wavey, Chris Salvatore, Colby Melvin, Matthew Lush, Willam Belli and many other global and local gay leaders from different regions who are following this initiative that gathered the entire gay community into one place. This is another proof how market leaders and influencers are aiming towards empowering the community.

"We're so happy with the results of bringing people together" says Liav Eliash, The CEO and Co-Founder of Moovz, "This video represents the need in the gay community to get people connected, and to show the world how strong and united we are. I'm grateful to see the engagement of users in our platform and I'm more than happy to see it growing and proud to be the platform that enables these kind of activities. Our mission is to connect gays from around the world and make them feel free to express themselves and feel good for being who they are. This video is one of several projects that are meant to prove the unity and show the power of being a part of a global community" Eliash continues.

Watching this emotional video you'll be able to feel the power of the community together with the difficulties it is experiencing. It demonstrates how big is the gay community, and proves that being part of a global one, can make the individual much stronger, and provide anyone with the freedom to be themselves, be proud of who they are and express themselves freely.
