With spring finally arriving this past week, it's time to start thinking about getting back out on courts with the Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts (DATE).
The official season will kick off the first Saturday in May and will run through the end of August at the Gates Tennis Center.
DATE's GLTA-sanctioned tournament, the Rocky Mountain Open will be held June 4th - 6th. Registration is open now.

Tennis drills with DATE
DATE member Mindy Knop is hosting drills with a ball machine at Gates Tennis Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Mindy says that " Tuesday sessions are for the B-level player and up. The ball is fast paced, and so is the movement. On Thursday's the ball will be at a C level or below. These drills will improve consistency, and show you where the most inconsistent part of your game is." Mindy requests that you RSVP to attend the session (cost is $5 each). Saturday tennis with the Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts is at City Park from 9 -11 a.m. on courts 1-6 and 11. Court 1 is for less experienced players.
Monday tennis is at City Park from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Enjoy a little 4th of July tennis with DATE
DATE's Saturday tennis league is at City Park this week from 9-11 a.m. on courts 1 through 6 and court 11. Many members show up before 9 a.m. for extra playing time but court permits don't start until 9 a.m. Bring a can of new tennis balls with you and remember to bring drinking water and stay hydrated.

Rocky Mountain Open registration ends this Friday
This Friday, May 22nd is the last day to register for the Rocky Mountain Open. This will be Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts' second year running the tournament. There will be three days of exciting competition, a draw party, a charity banquet benefitting Project Angel Heart and many opportunities to meet GLBT players from across the country. The tournament competition runs from Friday, June 5th through Sunday, June 7th.
The tournament has divisions for all playing levels so you don't have to be an outstanding player to be able to participate and enjoy this friendly competition.

Climb the DATE Ladder
Today is the last day to sign up for the DATE singles and double tennis ladders if you want to be placed by level. You can still sign up after May 12th, but will be placed at the bottom of the ladder and you will need to work your way up to your level. Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts get ready to kick off 2009 season
The first weekend in May will mark the start of the new season for Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts. Just like last season, DATE will be playing on Saturdays and Mondays at Gates Tennis Center and Denver City Park.
On Friday, May 1st, DATE will have a Kick-Off Party at Game-Set-Match which will include snacks and beverages and specials on tennis wear and gear to get you ready for the season. This will be a great opportunity for new players to meet current members and for continuing members to reconnect.
The first tennis date will be Saturday, May 2nd from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Gates Tennis Center and the first beer bust of the year will be Sunday, May 3rd at the Wrangler from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Everyone (you don't have to be a DATE member) is welcome to play and registration is now open. Competition in singles and doubles is held at all ability levels -- please consider playing in this great event!
The 2008 Rocky Mountain Open was voted both Best New Tournament and Best Small Tournament by the GLTA membership. The GLTA tournament schedule includes one or two events almost every week of the year and these awards are very prestigious and well-deserved by the tournament committee!
The Rocky Mountain Open also hosts a tournament banquet that features a Silent Auction that benefits Project Angel Heart. We very much need to collect items for the silent auction. Please consider donating an item for the auction and/or soliciting your family, friends, employer, businesses that you frequent, etc... to make a tax-deductible donation as well. A donation request form (with more details) from tournament director Gary Renville is attached to this message.

DATE Tournament this weekend

Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts: It's the official season is over but they're gonna play on
Here's what's what from DATE:
Saturday tennis is at City Park from 8 am to 11 a.m. They no longer have court permits so you need to show up early to get on a court. DATE usually will try to play on courts 1 - 6.
Monday evening tennis is at City Park from 6 pm to 8 pm. Once again, they no longer have courts permitted, so please try to show up early to get courts for the group.
DATE is scheduled to pour at the Wrangler Beer bust on Sunday, September 21st. This is an important function for the group to raise $$$ and keep fees low.
The season-ending DATE tournament is set for September 27 and 28 at Gates Tennis Center. This year is a club-only tournament and fees are only $20 for the weekend which includes all your tennis and lunch both days. If you register and pay by September 10th, you will also receive a free DATE t-shirt.

DATE Tournament
The 4th annual Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 27th (8 am to 4 pm) and Sunday, September 28th (8 am to Noon with Awards Lunch following). This year's tournament will be a club-only tournament which means you need to be a DATE member to participate.
The competition will be at 3 levels (A - Advanced, B - Intermediate, C - Novice) in singles and round-robin doubles. You will not need a predetermined partner for the doubles competition, you will play with many different partners over the course of the tournament.
Your registration fee will cover all court costs and lunch for both tournament days.
The early bird registration period for the tournament will run from Monday, August 25th through Wednesday, September 10th. If you register and pay during this time, the cost will be $20 and will include a free DATE t-shirt.
Registrations after September 7th will cost $30 and will not include the t-shirt, so please register early!

Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts picnic
DATE does not have court permits for Saturday this week (8/2). Instead, they're having a picnic at Congress Park (8th Avenue & Josephine) starting at 11 a.m. The group will be at the picnic tables next to the tennis courts and there should be some open courts if you can brave the heat. DATE News
The Denver Area Tennis Enthusiasts' Saturday tennis moves to Gates Tennis Center this week from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. DATE will be at Gates this Saturday (7/12) and next Saturday (7/19) due to previously scheduled events at City Park. To help combat some potentially hot weather conditions, the group will try to do some optional fun things (including some tie-breaker and doubles competitions) at Gates that will allow for some breaks during tennis time. If you can, please try to show up a few minutes early so that officials can explain the competitions and get everyone assigned. Also, think about meeting at Choppers (one block east of Gates) for a beer afterwards.
Monday tennis also moves to Gates Tennis Center from 6 pm to 8 pm. DATE's next two Monday evenings (7/14 & 7/21) will also be at Gates.
