Dining Out for Life Denver Celebrates 20th Anniversary!

April 24 marks the 20th anniversary of Dining Out for Life in Denver! On this one day, 250+ Denver and Boulder‑area restaurants will donate 25 percent of their food sales to Project Angel Heart. An estimated 90,000 local diners will dine out, allowing Project Angel Heart to prepare and deliver thousands of life‑sustaining meals for Coloradans who depend on the organization. This year, diners will also have the chance to win a yearʼs worth of groceries from Whole Foods (a package valued at $2,500), just for dining out!

Since 1991, Project Angel Heart has been delivering individually modified, nutritious meals to men, women, and children coping with HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney disease and other life-threatening illnesses. In 2014, with support from many volunteers and donors, Project Angel Heart expects to deliver more than 530,000 meals to 2,300 people.

Project Angel Heart nears goal for new facility

Project Angel Heart is on track to receive $650,000 in matching grants from the Boettcher Foundation and the Gates Family Foundation, Executive Director Erin Pulling said on Monday. “The support from our community has been incredible,” she said. “Within the last month alone, we have received more than $850,000 in donations and pledges from generous supporters.” One of recent major gifts is a $50,000 pledge from Seattle Fish Company. Seattle Fish has been a longtime supporter of Project Angel Heart and has worked closely with Project Angel Heart’s chefs to provide quality fish and seafood used to prepare meals for clients.

Another substantial gift came from The Anschutz Foundation. “They recently made a substantial second gift to help close the gap now that we are getting so close to the end of the campaign,” said Pulling. “They are one of the largest funders of our capital campaign and we cannot thank them enough for all of their support.”

Mindy Davidson, Director of Development for Project Angel Heart, said that so far, Project Angel Heart has raised $6,898,729 toward the capital campaign goal of $7,100,000. “We are less than $200,000 away from being able to secure two major matching grants,” she said. “The fact that we have been able to raise so much money during these tough economic times is a testament to how strongly our mission resonates within our community.”

The capital campaign is funding Project Angel Heart’s new facility, located at 4950 Washington Street in Denver. Construction and renovations are almost complete and Project Angel Heart is working towards relocating from its current location at the end of the year. In relocating to the Globeville neighborhood in Denver, near the I-25/I-70 junction, Project Angel Heart will immediately become more accessible to the community. The location is close to public transit stops and the Platte River Bike Trail, making it highly accessible by various means of transport for staff, clients, and volunteers alike.

The design of the space is meant to encourage volunteers and community members to linger not only within the building, but also on the terraces and benches outside. This emphasis on community participation is captured most clearly in the design of the kitchen, which is being designed in a ‘Main Street’ layout perfect for observing as Project Angel Heart’s chefs and volunteers work their magic.  This building is three times the size of the current location and will allow Project Angel Heart to eventually quadruple the number of clients served.

Theatre Review: Flaming of the Shrew, a modern twist on a Shakespearean classic

By Philip Doyle

Lucky 20 Productions is comprised of Samantha McDermott and Jerian Franco who present the very clever and inventive 'The Flaming of the Shrew'.

Lucky 20 Productions is a new theatre company dedicated to reinventing Elizabethan works with a modern day twist.   A percentage of every ticket sold goes to charity.  Words fail to express my enthusiasm for a burgeoning theatre company’s dedication to the creative arts for such a noble cause.

Shakespeare’s 'The Taming of the Shrew' contains many of the bard’s typical conventions found in his later comedies, but stands out for being less lighthearted.  It is a controversial play that reveals how men can achieve their hearts desire through deceptive manipulation.

'Taming of the Shrew’s' worldview highlights chauvinistic entitlement of men over women, and the presumption of power held by men of high social class.  In brief, the male characters disguise themselves, in order to win the devotion (and mastery) of two women, Bianca and Katherine.  The discontented and fierce Kate becomes the object of desire to Petruchio, who eventually obtains his object.

'Flaming of the Shrew' retains the archetypes of Shakespeare’s characters and adds a twist.  As its title suggests, the re-imagined characters in this version are gay.  Some may argue that changing the gender and sexual orientation of the characters alters the misogynistic tones of Shakespeare’s original work.

As a lover of Shakespeare and all things gay, I must confess that mere suggestion of adapting Shrew in this way takes major cojones.  I applaud Lucky 20 Productions for this effort.

'Flaming of the Shrew' is set in modern day New Orleans in the Mardi Gras shop of the Krewe De Vieux, within we find a mixed bag of surprises.  The ensemble provides an entertaining variety of complicated family dynamics and drag performance, duals of witty banter and comedic slapstick.

Standouts include Tim McGrath as the shrewd and headstrong KD.  McGrath displays a confident understanding of what his character says and perceives.

Damon Guerrasio as Hortensio is comfortable on stage, and a joy to watch.  Scott Jones is convincing as the patriarchal Baptiste. Brian Anderson as Graham has some delightfully funny moments.  Damien Dane has a strong drag presence and singing talent as Dion Bello. Tyler Mauro as Peter is young, cocky, and has an attractive presence.  Expecting an all-male cast, I was pleasantly surprised by Cassandra Steinhauser, who stepped into the role of Tranio.

I wouldn’t be doing my job without throwing in some tough love, so here goes. The "flaming" concept suggests a bold intention, and The Betsy Stage is a very intimate space, but there are moments where the actors lack the courage of their convictions.  At these times, it would have been nice to see some "sparks," but eventually the cast did manage to bring the show back up to temperature.

All things considered, the 'Flaming of the Shrew' is a refreshing reconsideration of one of Shakespeare’s earliest and controversial comedies.

Flaming of the Shrew runs through December 17 at The Betsey Stage, 1133 S. Huron Street in Denver, and a portion of all proceeds goes to Project Angel Heart.

Magic Johnson faking AIDS?

This is old but it's so outrageous that it's still worth posting.

Did you hear about the radio hosts who accused Magic Johnson of faking AIDS?

How do you fake AIDS?

Why would you fake AIDS?

If it was supposed to be a joke, it's just not funny.

Maybe these dolts should talk to some of the hard-working case managers at the Colorado AIDS Project who work with people living with AIDS on a daily basis. Or maybe they should check out some of the volunteers at Project Angel Heart who deliver meals to the many people in the Denver and Colorado Springs areas who are living with AIDS. Or maybe they should just keep their mouths shut.
