What's going on with Out Front Colorado?

Out Front Colorado was the topic of more than a few conversations that took place over the weekend wondering what was happening with the historic publication.

Out Front Colorado's blog and Facebook pages haven't been updated since January 2 and January 5, respectively, at the time of this posting.

Issues of the newspaper are very difficult to find. MileHighGayGuy's Drew Wilson stopped in to 10 of the paper's regular distribution sites and not one of them had so much as a single issue available. One of the sites went so far as to say they "couldn't remember" the last time Out Front Colorado had been delivered there.

Lynette Elliot, longtime Sales Manager who was announced as the new Associate Publisher of Out Front Colorado in the November 2, 2011 edition of the paper, could not be reached for comment, but her voicemail states that she is no longer employed with the company.

Out Front Colorado's phone number is still in service, though, with outdated information, as it still names Elliot as an employee. Publisher and Art Director Jay Klein has not returned calls for comment at the time of this posting.

Blogswarm: Contact Speaker Nancy Pelosi and demand that ENDA be put to a vote now

Today, Denver blogs MileHighGayGuy and Out Front Colorado (OFCB), along with the National Trangender & Transsexual Issue Examiner , are participating with other blogs around the country, including The Bilerico Project , Daily Kos , Open Left , Americablog, Pam’s House Blend, Towleroad, Joe My God, Michelangelo Signorile, David Mixner, Daily Gotham, Culture Kitchen, Taylor Marsh, PageOneQ, Dan Savage, GoodAsYou, and many others in a blogswarm to ask readers to contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (left) and ask that she move the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA – HR 3017) to a floor vote.

Colorado currently has employment non-discrimination protections in place that cover both sexual orientation and gender identity. It’s time for the federal government to take its lead from our state.

Dr. Jillian Weiss, writing for The Bilerico Project says, “In 30 states across America, there is no law against firing someone based on his or her sexual orientation, and the same is true in 38 states for gender identity. Will you join with us in asking that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people be protected from job discrimination?”

Michelangelo Signorile says, “We have been promised a vote on the ENDA for almost year. It was first coming in the summer of 2009, then put off until the fall, then put off until January 2010, then February, then March. And here we are, with no vote in sight.

“The Democrats may lose the House this fall. If that is the case we will not see workplace protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people perhaps for years to come. The votes are there in the House and they can be there in the Senate if Democrats and the White House take leadership.”

Call Speaker Nancy Pelosi at 202-225-4965 and ask that ENDA, HR 3017, move to a vote. Let’s swarm Pelosi’s office with phone calls and let her know that what works in Colorado will work for the entire country.

Out Front Colorado says LA gay mag merge 'makes sense'

Responding to reports that LA's two gay publications, IN Los Angeles and Out Front Colorado spin-off Frontiers, have merged, Out Front Colorado's managing editor Matt Kailey (pictured left) said, "We've seen the new product, and it looks great. In today's marketplace, it makes sense to merge these two products into one dynamic newsmagazine for Los Angeles, and we wish the new Frontiers a long and happy life serving the L.A. GLBT community."

LA's two gay papers to merge

A little-known fact is that Frontiers magazine, one of the largest and most successful gay publications in the country, was originally a West coast spin-off of Colorado's own Out Front Colorado, itself one of the oldest GLBT publications in the country.

Michael K. Lavers, writing for Press Pass Q, reports about the merge of In Los Angeles and Frontiers:

As media outlets continue to face a decline in advertising revenue and other recession-induced realities, two of Southern California’s largest LGBT publications have merged.

In Los Angeles and Frontiers co-publisher David Stern announced in a letter to readers last month that he and co- publisher Mark Hundahl would combine the two magazines into Frontiers-IN Los Angeles. The revamped publication hit newsstands and online on Feb. 25.

“I will not be so bold as to think that anybody reading this [letter] doesn’t also know that the current and temporary state of the economy was a factor in helping us make this decision,” Stern said. “Of course it was, but as you can tell by everything you’ve read above, it was certainly not the [only] factor.”

He added that he feels combining the two publications is the right decision..

“As we move into this realm of combined content and we look at the print editions of IN Los Angeles and Frontiers, it only makes sense that they combine also,” Stern said.

Frontiers launched in April 1981 while IN Los Angeles debuted in March 1998. IN Publications purchased Frontiers Publishing in 2007.

Karen Ocamb and Dana Miller are among the reporters and columnists whose work has regularly appeared in IN Los Angeles over the last decade. Ocamb said she feels optimistic over the merger.

“Given the economy and the new website we expect to debut this summer, I think this move to merge Frontiers and IN magazines is a good and logical one,” said Ocamb. “Frontiers launched just before the CDC announced what became the HIV/AIDS crisis and has an historic resonance. In recent years, it became more lifestyle oriented. IN Los Angeles was newsier and with more entertainment, so the combined editorial is essentially the best of both worlds in a magazine format."

Stern also announced that the company would launch a new licensed iPhone application this spring called MYGAYGO in conjunction with Frontiers Yellow Page Multi-Media Directory’s 2009 edition.

“We are very excited about this project and think you will be, too,” Stern said. “This website will be a one-stop source of content for Southern California’s LGBT community.”
