BackTracks is back!

BackTracks is back and better than ever for 2010!

One of Colorado AIDS Project's oldest and most beloved fundraisers, BackTracks is a 70s-themed dance party held at Tracks that started way back in 1982 at the original Tracks in Denver. That's even before my time.

The event returns this year because, according to Colorado AIDS Project's Jeff Trujillo, "BackTracks is superfun and people wanted it back. People love disco music and it's a throwback meant to be a good time for people to come together and dance and support CAP."

Hosted by Ginger Sexton (pictured) and Felony Misdemeanor, the word on the street is that there will also be some very interesting surprise performances.

Don't miss it!

Dallas' Round-Up Saloon coming to Denver?

I've heard from more than one local source that Dallas' famous Round-Up Saloon might be opening up a location here in Denver on 17th Avenue in the old Preferred Transportation building (pictured above).

Still waiting on an official word from Round-Up management but a staffer I talked to recently said of the rumor, "I don't think so. At least, not that I'm aware of."

So, make of that what you will.

The BELOW Bar, 1422 Larimer Street in Denver, came out last Thursday as the first gay nightclub ever in downtown Denver. I didn't have a chance to make it last week but it's definitely on my agenda to check out this week.

And Rockstar Aaron is the DJ!

Matthew Shepard Mixer at miniBAR this Sunday

Join the Matthew Shepard Foundation at miniBAR on Sunday, April 25 when special guest bartenders will mix up the night's signature $5 drink, which will be $5. Proceeds from the signature drink and a percentage of the evening's proceeds will benefit the Foundation.

miniBAR is supporting the GLBT community each month at its new "mini80s" weekly event. Every Sunday, the party begins at 4 p.m. with special features ($2 sliders, $2 PBRs, and $4 wells). DJ Rockstar Aaron, a master mixer of 80s music, will spin starting at 8 p.m. On a select Sunday each month, miniBAR will also select a GLBT-focused charity; a percentage of proceeds from that night will be donated back to the non-profit organization.

Things to do in Denver when you're gay: Tom Harrell Quintet at Dazzle

The Tom Harrell Quintet comes to Denver's Dazzle jazz club February 9-12.

A veteran jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader, whose work Newsweek described as “pure melodic genius,” Tom Harrell has steadily garnered international acclaim over the forty-plus years of his career. In 2008, Harrell received his second SESAC Jazz Award for 'Light On', which reached number one on jazz radio charts last fall. A frequent favorite in Down Beat and Jazz Times magazines’ Critics and Readers Polls, Harrell is known for his mellifluous sound and is widely regarded as one of the most stylistically versatile and creative improvisers and composers working today.

Much like the go-go boys at the winning bar, Splash Bar of New York City, the voting by GayCities members for the world's best gay bars was stiff and fierce to the very end.

Check out the results in all nine major categories, as well the winners in cities all over the world including the winner of Best Bar in Denver, Tracks.

The rebirth of the gay bar

For the past few years I've heard from PR people, local media, and people in the community that gay bars have been disappearing. Now, Gawker reports that OUT magazine says the trend is reversing and more gay bars are popping up all across the country.
