Working With Artists: News for Denver's Photographic Community

WWA is hosting a peer-to-peer perusal of portfolios in the Den at Working with Artists! The portfolio reviews will be an informal critique time for you to get feedback on your work from professionals, instructors, students and fellow photography junkies. The Den is WWA affectionately refers to studio "D" a few doors down from the gallery. These reviews will be held every time WWA has an opening in the Flash gallery, roughly every six weeks or so. The first one being on February 8 with the opening of ther non-juried February show, "Inter-Course: The Language of Love."

WWA has also created an online photo group on Flickr, so you can post images from classes and gallery shows for all of us and our community of photographers to see. The group will allow WWA and you and everybody to both see your work AND interact with you by discussing your work online.

Last but not least, the Denver Month of Photography is quickly approaching! For the month of March every gallery in the city, most of the museums and every available bus stall poster will be filled with photography. It will be a good month to be a photo enthusiast in Denver! The reason for this madness is that the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) is holding their 2008 national conference here in Denver.

HIV/AIDS Community Educational Forums in Denver

Understanding Your Labs with Dr. Ken Greenberg

We all pay attention to our T-cells and viral load results, but what about the other tests that are done? What are they all? How often should they be done? What should we know about these tests? What should we pay attention to? What about the CD4/CD8 percentages? CBC (complete blood count, red & white cells), liver, kidney, lipids (cholesterol & triglycerides), glucose (blood sugar), and urinalysis are all routinely tested. In addition, there are the resistance tests: genotype, phenotype, & "virtual phenotype". What about assays for viral fitness & replication capacity? Then there are other tests such as free testosterone, B12, prostate, HLA5701, the delta32 mutation, and the list goes on and on. Is there a difference between poz & neg people when a result is just above or just below the "normal" range? Usually rising viral load results in lower T-cells and vice versa, but what about when one goes up or down but the other doesn't? What's going on with those of us who have consistent & steady viral load, but T-cells also remain steady and we stay healthy? Dr. Greenberg will give us a concise and informative crash course on our bloodwork, and address our questions.

This Community Educational Forum will take place on Tuesday, February 12th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church at 9th and Emerson (in the community room, lower level, enter from Emerson Street). There will be a free dinner at 6 p.m. catered by Whole Foods and the Forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. No RSVP is necessary.

Pet of the Week: Nicco

Hi there! I'm just as fun as I look! I'm a friendly little fella who was given up by my former family because they didn't have time to exercise or train me properly. I really have no bad habits; I just need a family that is active, attentive, and willing to give me the guidance and consistency I deserve. Oh! I also need a whole lot of lovin'. In other words, I'm a typical young dog! Find out more at www.maxfund.org.

Tickets on sale now for STOMP

In a boisterous celebration of percussion and rhythm, STOMP will return to Denver’s Buell Theatre March 4 to March 9 for eight performances only. From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past thirteen years, having performed in over 350 cities in 36 countries worldwide. Tickets for the Denver engagement are on sale now.

STOMP, an overwhelming success marked by rave reviews, numerous awards, and sell-out engagements, is the winner of an Olivier Award for Best Choreography (London's Tony Award), a New York Obie Award, a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatre Experience, and a Special Citation from Best Plays. The young performers “make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound,” says co-creator/director Luke Cresswell. Stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra; Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – trashcans, tea chests, plastic bags, plungers, boots, and hubcaps – to fill the stage with compelling and infectious rhythms.

STOMP is directed and created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The smash hit returns to Denver’s Buell Theatre from March 4 - 9. Single tickets start at just $20. To charge by phone, call Denver Center Ticket Services at 303-893-4100. TTY (for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons): 303-893-9582. Groups of 20 or more, please call 303-446-4829. Tickets may also be purchased at the Denver Center Ticket Office, located at the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex Lobby, or at the Guest Services Desk at Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Attention wannabe fashion designers (I know you're out there!)

Thanks to an innovative design competition, one lucky Denver-area fashion designer will soon join other promising artists nationwide who have seen their outstanding jungle costume design go from the page to the stage in CIRQUE DREAMS JUNGLE FANTASY, which plays Denver’s Buell Theatre February 14-17. Sponsored by The Denver Center for the Performing Arts and CBS 4, the production is presenting a unique contest that invites area designers to submit a jungle-themed costume sketch for the acrobatic performers of the touring production. The winning design will be created by the costume team at Cirque Productions and will be seen on the Buell stage as part of the show.

Neil Goldberg, artistic director of the South Florida-based Cirque Productions, is the mastermind behind the interactive concept. “We came up with this idea in an effort to engage people of all ages with an experience that can bring their own dreams to life, an opportunity I wish I had as a young daydreamer,” Goldberg said.

Contest details: Anyone wishing to submit a sketch of their own jungle-themed costume idea can do so by e-mailing their design to costumes@cirqueproductions.com no later than February 8, 2008. No more than two designs may be submitted per contestant. If chosen, the costume design team at Cirque Dreams Studios will interpret and manufacture the costume, premier it onstage when the show performs in Denver, and make the winner the fashion toast of the town. The winner will also receive four complimentary tickets to the performance at the Buell Theatre and a $500 American Express gift card. For a complete list of rules or to enter online, please visit www.cbs4denver.com.

And if you have a predisposition to motion sickness, BYOB (barf-bag).
