Summer Glam 2012: A conversation with Andrew Christian

By Drew Wilson

Andrew Christian is the emperor of underwear, the sultan of skivvies, the chief of chonies! You probably own at least one pair of his manties, you've definitely seen his sexy video series - banned from YouTube so you know they're good - and now you can meet him in person at Summer Glam on Friday, June 15.

He'll be here in Denver to oversee the Andrew Christian Fashion Show portion of the night's entertainment so I gave him a call so I could find out everything I could about his underwear. That came out wrong but you know what I mean.

Andrew Christian and friends

Drew: So Mr. Christian, you're going to be here in the Mile High City on Friday for Summer Glam.
Andrew Christian: Yeah, gonna be doing a fashion show. An Andrew Christian fashion show, of course. We'll be featuring mostly underwear with a little bit of other stuff tossed in. Pretty much everything from my new spring/summer collection.

So what's new and exciting for spring/summer in the world of mens underwear?
Lots of color. I’ve introduced tons of new colors to my collection for spring and I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback. People are loving the colors. This past weekend for LA Pride everybody was in my boutique in West Hollywood snapping up everything in colors. We sold, like, so much.

One thing I want to get out of the way right off is I have to congratulate you on both the success and the sexiness of the new Andrew Christian underwear videos you guys have been doing. I think it's great that you guys are not shy about targeting the gay consumer plus they are hot, hot, hot!
Thanks, I’m really happy with how successful the videos have been. My team and I are a real think tank and we love tossing around ideas and putting together the videos. Gay men are a large part of our audience and we don't shy away from it.

What's it like being a famous underwear designer? Did such a thing even exist before Andrew Christian? I mean, before you there was, like, Fruit of the Loom and Hanes and nothing else.
Yeah, before me it was all pretty basic. It's good, you know? It's really cool that I can inspire young people. Sometimes I do events and I'll talk to young people who say, 'Oh my God, I want to be a designer just like you!' So it's kind of cool to know you can be a kind of role model to people.

Very important question. As an underwear expert, what do you know about underwear that we don't?
Well, the most important thing is obviously the fit. When I’m designing underwear I go through countless fittings before I release an item for production. Even an 1/8th of an inch off and I‘m changing it.

Andrew Christian Almost Naked Briefs (Purple)
What kind of underwear would you say are most popular? It seems like briefs went away for a long time but now are back in kind of a big way.
You know, it really depends. I’d say that maybe briefs are gaining the most popularity right now.

And what kind of underwear are you wearing right now?
I’m wearing the Andrew Christian Almost Naked Brief in the new, uh …

I can hear you looking at your underwear.
(laughing)… Yeah, in the new purple color.

What's your message for readers of MileHighGayGuy.com?
Come out to see the fashion show and help support pride and the diversity of the LGBT community. It’ll be an awesome night.

Summer Glam featuring Deborah Cox takes place on Friday, June 15 at The Ogden Theatre and tickets are on sale now! In addition to the divalicious Deborah Cox there will also be DJ Bedz, drag shows , and a fashion show from Andrew Christian (you know that's gonna be hot, hot, hot!). So get your tickets now and mark your calendars because this is one event you don't want to miss!

Pride Summer Glam 2012: A conversation with Goddess Duane

by Drew Wilson

You know the Goddess Duane from the long running show TUCKED at Charlie's, appearances on TV and radio, and for winning the OUTStanding Award for Person the Gays Love To Hate. And this Friday, June 15 the divine Goddess Duane will be putting all of those skills and talents to work as the emcee of Summer Glam 2012 featuring Deborah Cox, Jason Dottley, Danny Roberts, Andrew Christian and a slew of Denver's hottest models, drag queens and performers.
Goddes Duane - the one you love to hate!

Drew: In a nushell, what would you say we can expect from Summer Glam?
Goddess Duane: Denver is going to get an amazing show with Summer Glam. Its a break from the routine bar scene that we all see every year at Pride and people don't have to wait for Sunday's main stage to see one of the most fabulous collections of big name talent. This is going to be epic and will set a new standard for what to expect for Pride.

Why is a Goddess better than a Drag Queen?
A drag queen, although fabulous and a step above regular humans is still just that. A human. A Goddess surpasses all human royalty and is a force to be reckoned with. To be a Goddess one must be kind but also prepared to slap a bitch down if needed.

If you could murder somebody and not get caught, would you do it and who would it be?
I would never kill anyone regardless of whether or not I got caught. I believe in making people suffer over and over again as a form of punishment and making them wish they were dead.

Andrew Christian - the one you love to love

Underwear designer Andrew Christian will be at Summer Glam to oversee a fashion show of some of his latest designs. What do you think of his stuff?
I love Andrew Christian and his underwear. Who wouldn't? I did tell him last time I saw him he needed to come up with a design for the more full figured gay and even gave him permission to use me as a Muse.

Why should readers of MileHighGayGuy.com come out to SummerGlam this Friday?
Anyone who wants the details and info for the greatest haps in Denver subscribes to MileHighGayGuy so he has to have the best and hippest readers in the world. Of course they'll come.

DJ Brent Does Denver PrideFest 2012

One of Colorado’s most sought after DJs, DJ Brent is taking Denver PrideFest 2012 by storm with two appearances at the largest GLBT event in Colorado and one of the biggest GLBT Pride festivals in the nation. DJ Brent burst onto the Denver music scene last year at SWEET and since then, he’s gone on to book some of the most high-profile gigs in Denver – including PORNSTAR and Black Eye Ball. But Denver PrideFest 2012, June 16-17, marks his biggest and best gig yet, one that attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees over the course of the weekend and will expose him to the largest and most diverse crowd Colorado has to offer.

“I’m very excited to be a part of Denver PrideFest 2012,” says DJ Brent. “It brings the entire community together. Music always has been, and always will be, a big part of Pride and it’s quite meaningful for me to be a part of that.”

On Saturday, June 16, DJ Brent takes the Smirnoff Dance World Stage at 4pm. Dance World is where Denver PrideFesters go when they are ready to party and dance and that’s just how DJ Brent likes it.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what the crowd has to bring in terms of energy and excitement,” says DJ Brent. “I think people will really be ready to get their groove on at that point and I’m just the guy to give it to them. I’ve been working very hard on my set and I like to think that I have come up with something that really represents the sonic embodiment of a Saturday afternoon at Pride.”

Billed as “The Party of the Year” Climax is The Official PrideFest 2012 After Party and takes place on Sunday, June 17. It is presented by DJ Tatiana and CafeVivid.com, sponsored by MileHighGayGuy.com and held on the rooftop of Club Vinyl on Broadway, perfectly positioned within walking distance of Civic Center Park where PrideFest is held.

“I’m really looking forward to this one,” says DJ Brent. “Everybody who comes to the after-party at Climax is really ready to cap things off and go out with a bang. They’re hyped up because they’ve just come from the festival - or a nap - and they are always more than ready and raring to go again.”

Presented by The GLBT Community Center of Colorado, Denver PrideFest takes place annually in June – LGBT Pride Month as designated by President Obama – in downtown Denver’s Civic Center Park. One of the oldest and largest Pride events in the country, Denver PrideFest provides a $25 million dollar economic impact to the City of Denver, as reported in a 2009 survey conducted by Birchill Enterprises. For more information about PrideFest visit www.denverpridefest.org. For more information about DJ Brent visit www.dj-brent.tumblr.com.

Pride Summer Glam 2012: A conversation with the beautiful and talented Erica Cobb

Erica Cobb
Chicago native Erica Cobb has only been in Denver for a few years but she's already made a big splash as a TV and radio personality and noted straight ally of the gay community.

This Friday, June 15 she'll present Summer Glam 2012 - a Pride concert and celebration featuring diva Deborah Cox, underwear king Andrew Christian (and lots of hot, half-naked models), MTV's Danny Roberts, actor/musician Jason Dottley and a host of Denver drag queens and entertainers.

I had the chance to chat with Erica recently and here's what she had to say about Summer Glam, Denver's gay community, and banana hammocks.

Drew: How did Summer Glam come about?
Summer Glam came about originally because I was going through some career transitions and didn't know how much longer I'd remain in Denver.  It was actually just some chatter over a pretty fabulous lunch meeting that I should throw this party for the LGBT community who supported me so much over the years as a last hurrah type thing.

I NEVER envisioned securing Deborah Cox to come and perform and having such amazing supporting talent with Sordid Lives star and Pop Prince Jason Dottley, Real World New Orleans' Danny Roberts, the Andrew Christian fashion show and all of my fabulous drag queens and emcees Goddess Duane, Kiera Sexton, Venus Sexton, Sushi Chan, Shanida Lawya and Angelina Essex.  It's become like a fabulously flamboyant America's Got Talent: Denver Edition!

Members of Denver's gay community have been trying to get Deborah Cox to come here for years with Facebook petitions and things. How did you accomplish it?
Well, if I'm out of pocket for periods of time my friends know how to get me so I channeled that thought and CALLED HER HUSBAND!!  LOL, no seriously, her husband manages her and we had a great conversation.  At the end of the conversation he said to me "Erica, whether this works out or not, I think this is a really great thing you're trying to do."  That lit a fire in me and I thought, we HAVE to get this done!

Then everything started falling into place with investors, the media backing from Clear Channel and 95.7 The Party and the community enthusiasm and support.  It just seemed like all things were possible.  At the end of the day they are!

You've got an Andrew Christian underwear fashion show planned. What kind of underwear do you prefer on a man - boxers, briefs, or something else entirely?
I'm gonna go with a banana hammock that reads "make my day" ;) ... No seriously, definitely briefs it's always best to go "Beckham-esque!"

How would you describe your relationship with Denver's gay community?
I would like to think it's one of mutual respect and family.  I don't believe that family is 100% made up of people you are blood related to.  After relocating to Denver, I realized that I needed to have family here.  My husband and I felt so welcomed by the community that it was just a natural fit.

What's your message for readers of MileHighGayGuy.com?
I really hope that Summer Glam is an event that is an annual thing here in Denver.  PRIDE is like Christmas to me and to have another party that celebrates such a fabulous weekend is like a crazy dream.  This event on Friday will be about fun, celebration and togetherness.  I can't wait to see you all there!

Anything else you'd like to say?
Who's to say this can't happen again? Denver you have a voice, ask and you may receive! Who would you like to bring to Denver next?

Summer Glam featuring Deborah Cox takes place on Friday, June 15 at The Ogden Theatre and tickets are on sale now! In addition to the divalicious Deborah Cox there will also be DJ Bedz, drag shows , and a fashion show from Andrew Christian (you know that's gonna be hot, hot, hot!). PORNSTAR Pride Party: A conversation with Colton Ford

By Drew Wilson

Colton Ford comes to Denver this Friday, June 15 to headline the PORNSTAR Pride party presented by DJ Tatiana and Manhunt.net and sponsored by MileHighGayGuy.com.

Together with his boyfriend of four years Angelo Peterson, DJ Grind and The Maverick Men, Ford is sure to rev up what is already one of Denver's most high octane events.

I had the chance to chat with him recently about his upcoming appearance at PORNSTAR Pride, his new album, his porn past and what he's been up to in the ten years since the last time I interviewed him.

Drew Wilson: Hey Colton, you won’t remember this but I first interviewed you way back when  in 2003. So, what have you been up to for the past ten years?
Colton: Um, you know, aging.

Aging well, as far as I can tell.
Well, you know. I do what I can.

You are coming to Denver this Friday for the PORNSTAR Pride party. Do you do a lot of Pride events? What’s a typical day like for you?
I do. I'm coming to Denver, going to Portland and Providence. I’m kind of all over the map. Especially now with new music coming out. I’m just in the process of finishing up my new album. Mastering and all that kind of stuff. Just an hour ago I had a meeting regarding the new video for the single that’s coming out, 'Let Me Live Again'. And I’ve got a new talk show I’m doing on Yackit.com – an online talkshow.

So this new one is gonna be your fourth album?
This will be my third full record. The album I did when I was on Virgin Records in the 1990s never got released. But I did get one of the tracks from that album and now it's the last track on the new album. A good song is a good song and I’m happy to be getting it out there 15 years later. The new record has a lot of collaborations including the Nervo girls. There’s a nice variety of material on this album. There’s a dance element and some, like, Dazz Band, Gap Band old school funk and then I have a couple ballads on there as well. It’s a wide variety.

And you're going to be performing songs from the new album at the PORNSTAR Pride party?
I’m actually just going to do the single 'Let Me Live Again' and then I’ll be hosting the show along with my boyfriend Angelo.

I'm interviewing him later in the week. What should I ask him?
He was a big male model for 10 years so I would ask him about his modeling experience. He traveled the world, did very well. He won a modeling competition and very quickly got signed by agencies all over the place and did very well for himself.

The last time we talked your documentary Naked Fame was just about to be released. At the time it was supposed to be a way for you to complete your transition from porn back to music. What are your thoughts looking back on that so many years later?
It’s a mixed bag. Ultimately, hindsight’s 20/20 and at the time my partner Peter - Blake Harper - and I went into it thinking it was going to be great and fun and all that. But what you don’t realize is that they shot 300 hours of footage and you can pretty much edit together whatever story you want to tell with that much footage.

The way the documentary came to me was that I was working with Chris Long who had heard my music and had a lot of industry connections. He said he thought it would be compelling to document the transition and have this be a calling card for my music career. But what was presented to me and what it turned out to be were two different things. He had something else in mind when he was cutting the movie which is why you don’t see that much – or hear that much – of me musically in the movie. You know? So it really wasn’t a calling card.

The other piece that he left out was any footage of people in the business who had worked with me prior to my adult film experience. Like, they had Frankie Knuckles saying that I was one of the best kept secrets in the music business but none of that made the film. Anything to do with really establishing my history and credibility as an artist was not included in the film. And there were some other shady things too but it was a good experience in terms of learning the business and some of the behind the scenes stuff.

At first I wasn’t happy with it and Peter wasn’t happy with it. There was a lot of stuff that wasn’t correct and wasn’t honored. But what I realized was that what the film really showed was a gay couple having an extreme experience and I think the most perceptive people picked up on that. And both of my parents were supportive and I think that sends a powerful message to people in our community who don’t have that kind of acceptance and love in their family. To show them that it does exist and it’s a really powerful thing when parents love their children regardless of their orientation.

So in that regard I think that the documentary served a powerful purpose. But was that the reason I did the documentary? No. I opened up my life, my family, my partner and what I was told was going come from it and what did come from it were two different things. I’m glad it was a positive thing but the bigger picture is that a lot of people were like, "why didn’t we get to hear more of you and your music?" In the big picture I think the director did not make good choices in editing the film. In the long run it served me in ways I didn’t anticipate but I just wish someone had come to me in the beginning and just said, you know, we want to capture your life and your family and this, that and the other for no reason other than that you did porn and we want to see the reaction to that.

Have you ever done porn since?
No. Just 10 months back  in 2001-2002.

Amazing. At that time I was surprised that you had only done porn for such a short time but I have to tell you that, just before this interview, I was talking to people about you and all of them were under the impression that you still do porn.
That’s the thing about it. You do 11 or 12 films and they get recut and repackaged and remarketed and that shit never goes away. It’s just emblazoned in peoples' minds. It’s a powerful image and in some people’s eyes it’s a hard thing to get past but I got everything out of the experience that I wanted in that 10 month period.

Here's a dumb question. As I was researching for this interview I came across a lot of photos and information from when you and Peter - Blake Harper - were together. Now, it can be difficult for people to run into or see or hear about their old flames but you and yours are all over the internet. Is that difficult at all for you?
Peter and I are still very close and obviously, with what we did back in the day, it’s not an issue for me. When you have a partner who’s also in it you don’t really think about what would happen if you don’t sustain that relationship for whatever reason.

But then it’s different when you get into another relationship with someone who hasn’t done porn. I mean, there are things that I can’t save just for my boyfriend because it’s out there. Angelo has done a great job and he understands but when we’re eating breakfast and peole come up and interrupt our breakfast to let me know they just beat off to my video earlier, you know, obviously they don’t mean anything bad by it but it’s just not cool. It’s not cool.

For me, I knew what I was getting into and I signed up for it but my partner didn’t and there’s nothing I can do about the residual affects of that. It can be challenging at times because I want to protect my partner and want some things just for us but, when you put those images out there, that’s something that you can’t keep sacred for just your love object. It’s done.

It sounds like you've got some regrets, but your public persona is still so sexually charged …
No. I’ve always been provocative by nature. Just look around, when isn’t sex used to sell something? I get so sick of hearing this. God forbid that somebody sees the crack of my ass in a video when girls run around naked in their videos all the time and it’s never an issue. It’s a double standard. It’s OK for girls to do it but when guys do it, watch out because they’ve got that loaded gun called the penis.

I’m doing what I feel comfortable with and what represents me and there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s everywhere. Everywhere. Look at the movie Black Swan. Natalie Portman won an Academy Award but did you see the scene where she’s getting eaten out? The only thing we don’t see is the tongue going into the vagina. I mean the girl is all up in there. And it’s art and it’s OK and it’s mainstream but come on, it’s so hypocritical to me. I’m like, get over it, people. We’re sexual creatures. It’s part of the human condition. Get over it and let’s move on.

Let's move on to what you'd like to say to readers of MileHighGayGuy.com about why they should come see you this Friday at PORNSTAR Pride.
I think my message is for people to come on Friday because it’s gonna be a good time! We’re gonna have fun and kick off Pride weekend and enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship, if you will, that we experience together especially during these Pride events. That’s what its about - our love and support of one another and feeling the power we can have when we are connected as a community.

Every second Friday, MANHUNT & DjTatiana present PORNSTAR - the HOTTEST MONTHLY PARTY that Denver has ever seen. Beautiful gay men, sexy staff and the finest superstars of the adult film industry all under the same roof make this is a party not to be missed. And this Friday, June 15 PORNSTAR's Pride edition kicks off a weekend of festivities for Denver PrideFest 2012 with superstar Colton Ford, Angelo Peterson and DJ Grind.

Gay on Santa Fe: A conversation with artist Don Campbell

By Drew Wilson

Denver PrideFest 2012 takes place this weekend, June 16 and 17. But before the festivities and parade in Civic Center Park, another event will be taking place in Denver's Art District on Santa Fe.

They call it Gay on Santa Fay, and local gay artist Don Campbell of Don Campbell Images Studio and Gallery will be presenting 'The Male Form', an exhibit of fine art male nude photography, sculpture, and drawings. The photography and sculpture are the work of award winning artist Don Campbell and the male nude drawings are the work of deceased artist Will Laughlin.

Don Campbell
"I think, in part, I try to show people that they can be proud of who and what they are. Proud of what they look like. The medium of photography has always appealed to me and I like to photograph all body types. I use bodybuilders, skinny guys, older men and overweight men. There’s beauty in all of them," says Campbell, who has been a photographer and sculptor since elementary school. "I’ve always done this type of work but years ago it was sort of undercover. There wasn’t a gallery anywhere that would show it."

Times are changing, according to Campbell, in terms of mainstream acceptance of the male nude form as fine art and events like PrideFest and Gay on Santa Fay play a large part.

"I think PrideFest is a time for all of us to be out and who we are," says Campbell. "Every time we’re seen out like this we are accepted a little bit more. I’m a firm believer in being out. Out to everyone. That’s key. It’s made my work more acceptable but my gallery is still one of the few in the country that openly shows male nudes. There are very few others. The male form still raises eyebrows but people are accepting more and more that fine art can have an erotic element to it. People are used to the nude female form but I say the male nude form is just as beautiful and there’s nothing wrong with that"

He sees the show as a good way to kick off PrideFest 2012 festivities. "This is a great place to start your Pride weekend," enthuses Campbell. "We’re open from 6-9 pm so you can come see the exhibit and then there’s still plenty of time to go out and party afterwards!"

As for his sculpture, Campbell describes it as a mix of figurative and abstract works - sometimes all at once. "My sculptures are figurative as well as abstract but most of my work is a combination of the two," he explains. "If it’s abstract you can still see shapes that look like they might be alive. I like to say they might have been alive at one time or maybe they’re in the process of becoming alive."

Don Campbell Images Studio and Gallery has made it's home on Santa Fe for the past two years and Campbell loves being part of it's vibrant art scene. "Oh, it’s great," he exclaims. "We get tons and tons of people in here on First Fridays. It’s wonderful to see people look at my work and eavesdrop and hear what they say. And a lot of people do have something to say about it because my work can be a little controversial sometimes. Some people get offended but I tell them if they’re offended to just go to another gallery. But usually I get comments that I'm able to walk the fine line of male nude eroticism so that it doesn't cross the line into pornography."

And as for what distinguishes eroticism from pornography? Campbell says, "I don't know exactly, but it’s a fine line. And it depends on the individual. As they say, it’s in the eye of the beholder.
